“We were thrilled to be recognised by the Sommelier Wine Awards. It helps us to show – via the people whose palates really matter to the on-trade – that we are making the kind of wines that they need to be ordering. SWA’s credibility with that audience is

second to none.” Ben Smith, Head of Communications, Concha y Toro UK

WHAT IS THE SOMMELIER WINE AWARDS?The Sommelier Wine Awards (SWA) is the UK on-trade wine competition, aimed specifically at finding the best wines available to hotels, restaurants, pubs and bars.

HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER WINE COMPETITIONS?

No mainstream high street wines are permitted to take part. The only exception to this rule are sparkling and fortified wines, which may enter even if they have high-street distribution. Online-exclusive wines (from supermarkets) are permitted.

The judging teams are made up entirely of sommeliers and on-trade wine buyers. This is a competition that is judged by the on-trade, for the on-trade.

The judges assess the wines using criteria that they would use in their day jobs to come up with a final ‘wine list’ of Gold-medal winning wines, as well as Silvers and Bronzes. Solid, reliable performers are awarded the “Commended” classification.

ANy ADDITIONAL AWARDS?Yes - and as with everything else in SWA, they’re geared to the needs of the on-trade readership. By The Glass awards are given to wines picked out as offering truly great value and

supreme versatility. Food Match awards are given out to Gold medal-winning wines that come out top in a separate food-matching round. Critics’ Choice wines are picked out by our judges as being extra special during the tastings.Merchants and producers that have stood out in one or other part of the competition will be considered for a special Merchant or Producer awardIn addition, Wine of the Year

awards are the rarest and most prestigious of all, chosen by panels of sommelier tasters at Imbibe Live, the leading on-trade show in London.

HOW ARE THE RESuLTS LISTED? All medal-winning wines will be listed in the SWA results guide, the SWA app and the website, with judges’ tasting notes on the SWA app and website, along with tasting notes, price and stockists details. Commended wines will be listed in the SWA app and website.

Published mid-year, in print, online and via

the free SWA app, the results are a buyer’s guide to the best on-trade wine. Wine buyers are known to keep it and refer to it all year.

HOW ARE THE RESuLTS PROMOTED?The SWA results book is sent to dedicated buyers and key servers of wine in the UK on-trade via Imbibe’s print database of over 15,500, as well as key buyers from independent wine merchants and wholesalers. Results are shared online with a wider audience of 82,000.

All SWA winners (Gold, Silver, Bronze and Commended) will appear on www.sommelierwineawards.com and be featured on www.imbibe.com

The free interactive tablet or smartphone app gives further reach to the results.

An additional 3,000 copies of the Gold Book will be picked up at Imbibe Live at Olympia in London on 29th and 30th June 2015.

Doing well in SWA will aid your marketing in international markets, too.

At Imbibe Live there will be dedicated SWA tastings over the two days of the show, giving further exposure to around 10,000 visitors.

Exhibitors will be able to distinguish their winning wines at this show, or any other, with neck collars, stickers and other marketing collateral, available to all medal winners.

SWA Guides will be available at all of Imbibe’s many tastings during 2015, and a selection of generic tastings too.

HOW DOES THE COMPETITION WORK? The tasting panels are made up of top sommeliers and restaurateurs. Each panel is chaired by an MW,

sommelier or consultant who understands the particular needs of the on-trade. Wines are tasted blind and by category (see p.6 of this form). The trade list price (excluding VAT) of each

wine will be known to the judges to allow them to assess value for money. During the first round of tasting, the judges narrow down the selection to roughly the top 45% of wines sent in.

Those remaining go through to the second round where the medals are awarded: Bronze, Silver or the ultimate accolade – a place on the Gold List. Solid first round performers will be awarded the Commended classification.

By the end of the competition, the judges will have put together a wine list of medal winning wines. Like every restaurant list, it will have good value and House Wines, fizz, fortifieds, favourites like Sancerre and Rioja, modern wines from Old and New Worlds, and a few quirky or expensive wines that are there just because the judges liked them! If an on-trade buyer is trying to fill a gap on their own list, the Sommelier Wine Awards guide is the perfect place to start.

“I keep the Sommelier Wine Awards results book on my

desk all the time. I use it as a reference to help fill in gaps

on my list.” Shana Dilworth, Head Sommelier, The Orrery

WHAT ARE THE TASTING CRITERIA?In the wine itself, marks are awarded for balance, expression and food-friendliness. But since these are wines with a definite commercial purpose, value for money and versatility are key, too.

DOES FOOD COME INTO IT?

Very much so. As well as judging every wine with food-friendliness in mind, our panel chooses wines from the Gold List to match with a selection of classic restaurant dishes for the Food Match awards (menu

overleaf).

CAN THE MERCHANTS WIN AWARDS, TOO?Yes. Every year there will be a special award to the merchant who secures the most

listings on the prestigious SWA Gold List. There will also be discretionary awards

for excellence in specialist areas in our Merchant of the Year Awards.

CAN I ENTER THE SAME WINE FOR DIFFERENT SECTIONS?Yes – though each submission must be paid for. If you want to enter a Pinot Grigio, as both a Varietal Classic and a House Wine, say, that would count as two entries. All the categories are listed here and online.

WHAT ARE THE CRITERIA FOR ENTRy?The wine must

… be available to the UK on-trade, either through importers, merchants etc or directly from the winery. Wines may bear temporary labels, if finished labels are not yet available.

… be mainly destined for the on-trade.

A presence in the smaller independent merchants is perfectly acceptable, but wines on sale in the high street supermarkets or multi-grocers are NOT allowed to enter. Any wine entered and found to have broad high street distribution will be disqualified. The only exceptions are: i) sparkling and fortified wine, where high-street available wines may enter.ii) wines which are online or mail order (ie Tesco Wine Club, The Wine Society).

… bear the current official TRADE LIST price ex-VAT .

PLEASE NOTE There is no limit on the number of wines

entered per submitter. The competition is open to wines that are

looking for UK distribution, or are prepared to ship directly to on-trade customers.

“We have found the Sommelier Wine Awards the most useful of any

of the awards for the on-trade. They grab the attention of on-trade

buyers and have really helped us build sales through wine savvy

outlets.” David Gleave, MD, Liberty Wines
