From the Principal Musical Once again our school community has presented a wonderful musical, Beauty and the Beast, to enthusiastic crowds over five nights in the last week. A total of 146 students, 21 staff, 5 former students and 51 parents have, over the past six weeks, been working exceptionally long hours to ensure that the production was of the lofty standards that we have come to appreciate with our musicals. Feedback from the audiences has been glowing in the praise of all aspects of the production. The acting, singing, dancing, orchestra, sound and lighting, set design, costumes and hair and make‐up have all been beyond reproach, and these are only the aspects that go to make up what is presented on stage. Add to that the logistics of feeding the cast and crew, running the canteens on the night, designing and printing programs, ticketing, photography and videography and you can only imaging the work that has gone on ‘behind the scenes’. While I understand and appreciate that our musicals are a real ‘team effort’, there are a few who need to be specially recognised. Without doubt, much of what can be attributed to our musical just would not be possible without the expertise and direction of Ms Marisa Carolan. Marisa’s enthusiasm and attention to detail are the backbone of the high quality production that we witness. Ms Lucienne Herft has led the orchestra with great professionalism, similarly with our choreographer and dance teacher Ms Chloe Woodward. Each of these sections of the musical are a credit to their directors. Ms Naomi Leviton has been tireless in her support of students back stage and with set design, construction and logistics for each individual performance. Judy Boylan, Karen O’Kane and Jenny Bowden coordinated the management of programs,

ticketing and other requirements resulting in smooth operations. Mr Ian Greig worked closely with Ms Leviton in ensuring the quality of the set designs. As usual, much of our musical just would not happen without our former students and friends. Ben Mills, Michael Goodyear, Aaron Heyman, Keith Muir, Kayla Burrett all played major roles with their expertise in sound, lighting and technical assistance, and their work is very much appreciated. Finally, to our wonderful parents. Ms Nati Fernandez must be congratulated for her work in leading the team that produced such magnificent costumes while Mrs Marg Martin and Mrs Francis Campbell coordinated the parents who prepared the suppers on each of the evenings for cast, crew and staff. As you can see, this truly was a team effort and with that team comprising over 220 members, thank you one and all.

Project Penguin On Thursday, I had the pleasure of attending the Project Penguin showcase at Taronga Zoo. This initiative of Northern Beaches Secondary College, now in its 10th year, is still having a positive impact

on both our students and wider community as students raise awareness of the plight of the Fairy Penguin colonies in and around Manly. This year, students from our school mentored primary school students to make interactive displays which showcased aspects of what can be done to protect the environment of the Fairy Penguins. Our students received great praise for the manner in which they led their groups and for the quality of work that was produced with their support. Evan Foo and Kate Meehan were recognised by the Zoo staff for their outstanding contributions to their group and were presented with a Friends of the Zoo pass as part of their reward. I would like to pass on my thanks and congratulations to all students who participated and to the staff who supported them. Uniform With the cooler weather now approaching, and the upcoming school holidays, it is timely to remind all students and their parents about the uniform requirements of the school. I have once again included the ‘Uniform Sheet’ which showcases the correct uniform to be worn at our school. I would ask parents to ensure that students do have the correct uniform to wear, if not now, certainly to start the beginning of Term 3. It would be wonderful to see all of our students in uniform each and every day. From the beginning of Term 3, if students are not able to be in the correct uniform on a particular day, we will be asking that they supply a note from home explaining why they are out of uniform. Upon producing this note, students will be issued with a ‘Uniform Pass’ for the day and no further questions will be asked. We seek you cooperation in ensuring that these guidelines are followed. Enrolment into Years 7‐11 for 2017 Applications for enrolment into Years 8 to 11 for the 2017 school year will open on 27 June, 2016. Applications will remain open until 22 July after which no further applications will be accepted. Application forms are available from the school or from the Department of Education, High Performing Student’s Unit website at http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/learning/7‐12assessments/selective8_12.php As a part of the selection process for students at Manly Selective Campus, students will be required

to sit for the Higher Ability Selection Test (HAST) on Saturday 13 August. The results from this test will form one part of the selection criteria for enrolment. Further details are available by contacting the school.

From the Deputy Principals Once again this week I was reminded of the amazing talent we have at Manly Selective Campus. Each year the musical is a highlight of the school calendar and this year’s production of Beauty and the Beast was exceptional. Congratulations to all performers, musicians, dancers and crew involved and a huge thank you to the staff and parents who give so much of their time and energy to support our students and provide them with the opportunity to showcase their considerable talents. Year 12 students have been busy with a range of assessment tasks over the past week and are to be congratulated for their hard work and resilience. A number of students have also been juggling their impressive and varied roles in the musical with their assessment requirements and their well‐developed organisational skills have been well tested over recent weeks. The HSC Trial timetable will be issued next week and, with one week of school before the holidays, students are encouraged to plan their revision and study program to ensure they are well prepared for the examinations during Weeks 3 and 4 next term. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve had the privilege of reading through Year 8 and 10 reports prior to them being posted home early next week. Congratulations to all students who have been demonstrating academic excellence and consistently achieving their personal best. To those few students who have yet to realise their potential, please read the report feedback provided by your teachers and reflect on your Semester 2 performance to ensure that you work towards improving your knowledge, understanding and results over the remainder of this year. As Year 11 and 12 students know, a sound and consistent work ethic in the junior years ensures students are well prepared for the demands of Senior School. Congratulations to Carl, Ethan and Jarod who assisted with refereeing for the primary schools' PSSA Soccer Gala Day in Manly Vale on Friday last week. ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ Wow, wow, wow! Last night I was in the audience for my first musical at Manly Campus and am absolutely in awe of the talent, professionalism and dedication of all involved in this impressive production. The set, gorgeous costumes, superb musicians, extraordinary back stage crew and the fabulous performers made this production a success. As Deputy for Year 7, 9 and 11, I was particularly proud to see students from all these years excelling in their starring roles. Congratulations also go to the talented staff members, ex‐students and parent helpers who work tirelessly to ensure the musical is a success. Information has been sent home to all Year 7 parents inviting students to be involved in the Praxis Project. The Year 7 Praxis Project is a series of immersive one‐week projects designed to extend and enrich the learning experiences of gifted and talented learners. During the projects students will explore a concept, identify problems related to it in our local area, consider solutions to these problems, and share these solutions to an audience of teachers, peers, parents and industry experts at the conclusion of the project. Each project focuses on one or two main disciplines, providing students with an opportunity to work collaboratively with peers who demonstrate a similar aptitude or interest in this particular discipline. The Term 3 Praxis Project is focused on the disciplines of Science and Mathematics, and applicants are expected to have a strong aptitude or interest in both. The Praxis Project will take place over 5 full school days in Week 3, Term 3. To be involved students are to complete the

application form and submit it to the front office by recess Friday, Week 1, Term 3. Congratulations to the Year 9 students involved in Project Penguin. Year 9 students acted as teachers and mentors supporting the learning of Year 5 students from North Curl Curl and Harbord Public Schools. The opportunity for authentic learning within the community and for students to genuinely make a difference and take action to address an issue that they are passionate about has been an exceptional example of good practice in teaching and learning. On Thursday students showcased their community awareness campaigns to a very proud audience at Taronga zoo.

Add to this her remarkable achievements with student HSC performances, and her excellent stewardship as Head Teacher of our English faculty, and you have the hallmark of a most talented and generous educator.

This year’s production of Beauty and the Beast will sadly be Marisa’s final work. She is hanging up her hat as Director and her expertise, leadership, artistic vision and passion will be sorely missed.

From the Archives Every week we will bring you an item from a past issue of the yearly Pines Magazine. 1989 is our archive under the spotlight this week; it is an era when horoscopes were prominent in the school magazine. The Library Report from 1989 is the featured article for this week. Library Report Just in time for this report we have been informed by the department that renovations to the library to the value of $22,000 have been approved. This initial request was to extend the library’s exterior wall to the playground near the basketball courts, but this was deemed too expensive. Second option was to extend along a block to incorporate both video rooms. This would require installation of a cable system to send video to classrooms, again an expensive operation. A third option was to extend one video room, enlarging the video office. This less expensive compromise is no doubt the approved option as it will provide extended senior study area and still allow for video viewing. Special thank you to Mrs Spike who took the place of Mrs West and then Mrs Kelly while they went on long service leave, to the P&C Association for their continued financial assistance, and to the regular customers for their support. To those who have not found their way to the library as yet, a special invitation during 1990 – The International Year of Literacy – come to the library and have a look. Bands of Manly Selective Campus Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival The MSC String Ensemble and Chamber Orchestra performed at the Northern Beaches Music Festival on Saturday evening. The

excellent event is not a competition, but Manly SE's performance was highly regarded by the official appraiser, suggesting it was among the top of the string ensembles performing. We know we can play even better. Familiarity with the material, some played on our great tour, still requires attention to detail, under demanding performance conditions. I was particularly impressed by our recovery skills and even more impressed by the dedication and service to the Ensemble, rendered by the Year 12 students at this critical time of their year. Chamber Orchestra, directed by Liz Scott and with guest singer Alex Young, also received a great reception in the gala section of the Northern Beaches Musical Festival. The dedication of the Year 12 students to attend during such a busy time of assessments was appreciated by all.

Concert Band is to be congratulated for their performance on Friday night at the festival. A great effort by all band members.

Jazz Combo at Sydney Eisteddfod Jazz Combo have had an eventful last few weeks competing in the Sydney Eisteddfod and achieving a successful 3rd place, and also performing at the Shangri La Hotel for a community event where they performed beautifully for the guests attending the Australian Family Network Awards. Students deserve high praise for their performances, the way they conducted themselves and organising their own extra rehearsals to ensure their best sound. A huge thank you to Kim Horton and Rod Devries for assisting the students with transport to both events. Bushcare Report Thanks to financial support from the school and P&C the Bushlink team and parent volunteers continue to work in the bushland near the oval to control or remove environmental weeds and regenerate the bushland. Term 2 has seen us focus on the following weeds. Ipomoea indica, Acetosa sagittata, Lantana camara, Bidens pilosa, Ehrharta erecta

The resilience of parts of the bushland are increasing and areas that were once completely covered by weedy vines now have a free canopy and mid layer. The ground layer, while it still has a number of weed species, has some juvenile native species appearing. The team have also been enjoying cleaning up the garden bed on the side of the hall
