The teacher Michelle has accepted a contract overseas. As it will take 4 weeks for Footsteps to train a new teacher we have opted to begin the program again in Term 4. This will commence on Monday October 22 and go for 8 weeks through to Monday 10 December. Stage 3 Camp This week our students from Years 5 and 6 will be travelling to the Sport and Recreational Centre for a 3 day camp. They will leave Wednesday morning 23 May at 8.45am and return by approximately 3.15pm on Friday 25 May. This is a great opportunity for students to engage in activities they would not normally do. This is all made possible by the dedication and commitment from the teaching and support staff who will attend the camp with the students. We all look forward to many stories on their return. Walk and ride safely to school Many of our students walk and ride either their scooters or bikes to school. It is extremely important for students to follow the road safety rules. Pedestrians, it is extremely important that they cross the road at crossings wherever possible. Bike and scooter riders need to wear a helmet at all times and if riding on the footpath to be aware of people walking on the footpath. This is a shared space and it is important to either ring a bell or speak out to let walkers know you will be passing. Assemblies This week there will be no assembly for students in Year 3-6 as our students in Year 5 and 6 will be at camp. The following week will be a ‘Value Pins’ Assembly and then another assembly in Week 6. The K-2 assembly will be on as usual at 12.10pm Reconciliation Walk The Reconciliation Walk will be held on Tuesday 29 May. The walk starts about 10.30am from the Monaro Street Bridge and proceeds through the main street to the Town Park. Students in Years 5 and 6 and all Aboriginal students will represent our school at the walk. At the completion of the walk at the Town Park there will be a short ceremony followed by a barbecue and fun activities for the students. Athletics Carnival The Athletics carnival will be on at Wright Park on Thursday 31 May. All students from K-6 will attend the carnival. The P and C will be offering option for a lunch order. A separate note has been sent home regarding this. Please note permission slips and lunch orders are due back on Monday 28 May. Students to please wear house colours and bring a mat to sit on. School Banking Helper The position of a volunteer School Banking Officer is now available. One of our lovely volunteer mums is no longer able to help with the school banking on a Wednesday and so we are looking for someone else to assist another of our mums already helping. Please ring the front office on 6297 2020 if you would like to volunteer. In Term 1 Queanbeyan West's year 5/6 Girls Netball team won 5-4 against Queanbeyan South to progress to the second stage of the Netball Knockout competition. On Friday 18th May the girls travelled to Jerrabomberra PS to compete in the second round. The girls played amazingly and had a great time. Unfortunately we were beaten by Jerrabomberra but the girls had fun and played in the true spirit of Queanbeyan West Public School.

On Thursday 24 May, we have a special visit from Author and Illustrator Dr Cameron Stelzer. Cameron is visiting Queanbeyan West Public School to run workshops with our K-2 students. Kinder students will enjoy an interactive Big Screen Book Reading and follow-along drawing activity with Cameron. Year 1-2 students will be inventing creatures/characters or their own pirate ships (creations which can then be used in their own stories). Our students and teachers are looking forward to a fantastic day! In conjunction with the Author Visit, Queanbeyan West Public School have a special opportunity to purchase signed and personalised copies of Cameron’s books at special prices. Individual items are $15 each and there are also exclusive book sets available. Students will receive an order form on the day of the workshops. Forms and payment can be returned the following day, Friday 25 May, to the Library.

Payments on Line For your online payments to be received by the school the next day, all POP payments need to be made before 6pm the evening before, therefore payments made after 6pm on a Friday are not received at the school until Tuesday.

Circular Rhythm – Lucas Proudfoot Circular Rhythm presents Indigenous Australian culture in a dynamic, fun and informative show. It is a solo performance featuring guitar, stomp box, didgeridoo, clap sticks and boomerangs. The format is interactive with audience participation a key component. Lucas Proudman is a member of the Tweed Coast Bundjalung/South Sea Islander Community with a background in professional surfing, music and traditional Aboriginal dance.
