These changes are complex and in some ways beyond our control and maybe even irreversible. The more I learn about these global issues, the more I worry. But while there is no point blocking it all out, we must all use this knowledge to bring our best today, tomorrow and the day after that as we head for the future. Anything that can be automated will be automated. The most successful contribution of tomorrow will be those that cannot be automated. The human skills; empathy, compassion, creativity, collaboration will be the prize. At Queanbeyan West we have comprehension of the global big picture and we use this to drive our determination and desire to design, deliver, reflect, adjust and learn across students, staff and the wider community. We are building a culture of growth mindset, of feedback and critique and self-assessment. At QWPS we know that if our students and staff can each articulate their growth and point to evidence that supports their judgement, they will be clear about their future steps and where they may need help. This is ownership of learning. We also know that learners thrive on purposeful learning, where their work, their product, their outcome matters and has an authentic audience and or contribution. When learning is real, learners deliver deep engagement. This week is a Focus Week. It’s a week in which we schedule as little outside activity as possible in order to focus on classroom programs and quality learning. We do have, from time-to-time, weeks of extreme activity and we try and balance that out when we can with peace and serenity at other times. Fortunately, the classrooms are always well- structured and places of calmness no matter what we seem to throw at them so we keep rolling along and just enjoy the ride each week. It is one of the great things about our school that when we shut the school gates each day we have our own little community with our own rules and standards and procedures. We have a positive and supportive learning environment and a playground that works astonishingly well given the impacts of the day to day activity, the number of children and the size of the playground. Our biggest impact on this positive and supportive environment though is parents and community members in choosing, at times, to either sort out disputes or issues they perceive to be happening without referring them to staff. That cannot happen. We are charged with providing that positive and supportive environment for all children. We realise that sometimes things will not run smoothly but we will not tolerate aggression or threatening behaviour at any time. Never approach students or other parents to “sort out” an issue. Never approach staff without using manners and civility. Otherwise, do not come inside our gates. 99% of our interactions are positive and we will keep them that way. Have a great week, everyone. I look outside my window today and see smiles and activity and great students doing great things. Look after each other and enjoy the sunshine. Newsletter We are trialling, for a 4-week period, publishing the Westerly in electronic form during this term. From Tuesday 21 August and including Tuesday 28 August, Tuesday 4 September and Tuesday 11 September the Westerly will be, as it is currently, available via email, on the website and through School Stream. During the Week of September 11; I will make available a survey, for your response, on how our trial has been received. There will be some hard copies available at school, during this period. If we don’t have your email address, and you’d like to update it, please contact the front office. Thank you for your support. Appointments - If you require an appointment with a teacher or member of our executive staff, please contact the office. Indicate who you would like to speak with, leave your details, a short message and a contact phone number. Teaching staff will return your call as soon as possible when they are not on class or supervision duties. Appointments with the Principal can be made by contacting the school office. To ensure this is effective, please ensure your contact details and those of an emergency contact are up to date. Medication/Asthma/Allergies/Anaphylaxis – If your child requires prescribed medication to be dispensed at school, requires medication for asthma or allergy related health issues, or has a diagnosed medical condition (e.g.: epilepsy, diabetes, anaphylaxis), please collect the appropriate medical forms from the office. Students are not to carry medication on them; this is a WH&S issue. All medication is to be delivered and remain in the Office and as stated above requires parents to complete an administration of medication form. Have a good week Mrs Vicki Muscat Principal

The P&C Committee are organising a Father's Day Raffle. They are seeking donations of items that could be placed into gift hampers. All donations are greatly appreciated. Items can be dropped off at school
