As we run our 13th golf tournament, WEEF would like to thank its sponsors and participants for helping raise funds that directly benefit the students in the Westerly School District. WEEF’s longstanding mission has been to ensure that the educational needs of our children are met to the fullest extent possible. The funds raised by WEEF have allowed the growth of the grant process to include separate focus grants, which can reach a broader cross-section of students throughout the district and provide teachers with greater flexibility in developing exciting programs to benefit those students. Because of your support, WEEF looks forward to the upcoming year with confidence, knowing that we are making a difference in the ongoing development of all our students.

Leveled Books for Reading Workshop - WEEF will be providing a three year subscription to "Reading A to Z," an online leveled reading program, for all three kindergarten classes at Springbrook Elementary School. This program allows teachers to enhance existing classroom libraries by printing out leveled books for reading workshops and at-home practice. An online component provides student access to reading skills programs. Maria Raimondo - Springbrook Elementary School Stability Balls - Brooke Arnold's 2nd grade classroom at Bradford Elementary School will receive 5 stability balls to be used in place of chairs. Research shows students who are given the opportunity to use stability balls have increased focus, attention, posture, handwriting and stamina inside the classroom. Brooke Arnold - Bradford Elementary School Hands On Electronics - This grant supports a proposal for a new electronics technology program at Westerly High School, developed in response to the current “maker” movement, an important trend in which individuals build and create their own products. In the Hands On Electronics class, students will use different platforms to learn about the technology supporting iPhones, iPads, and most of our current electronic devices. Susan Wood - Westerly High School Home Literacy Connection - The Next Step - Last year WEEF funded materials for Springbrook Elementary School to support literacy through workshops for parents. Due to its success, Springbrook will expand the program to address the needs of general education students and English as a Second Language (ESL) students. The home/school literacy connection program will invite parents and their children to training sessions where they will receive the tools and strategies that help them support their child's learning at home. Christine Byrne & Beth Gunning - Springbrook Elementary School WHS Physical Education Grant - The Westerly High School's gym facility will be enhanced with the purchase of TRX training equipment. All students are able to use the gym after school while being supervised by Physical Education teachers. The TRX training system will provide innovative fitness activities being offered to WHS students both in and after school. Steve Scott - Westerly High School Hands On Robotics - Sharon Ficcara's proposal to purchase KIBO robotics blocks will engage students in grades pre-K-2 in developmentally appropriate, hands-on robotics activities which promote problem-solving and computational skills. The program will prepare Westerly students starting at a very young age to be problem solvers and know the language of technology. Sharon Ficarra - District STEM Coordinator Camp Invention - Camp Invention is a national enrichment program which provides elementary school students with an opportunity to attend an enrichment-based summer camp. This program's immersive curriculum encourages curiosity, creativity, innovation, problem solving, communication and collaboration. State Street School was selected to host the summer program--the first one in RI. WEEF provided funds for materials to help offset the cost of tuition and allow children at an economic disadvantage to attend the camp. Mary Kay Patten - State Street Elementary School

Sensory Items Promoting Student Success - Many students who benefit from sensory

and motor development equipment during the school day can also benefit from such

equipment during their time at the Tower Street Before and After School Enrichment

(BASE) program. This grant provides equipment to maximize students’ learning

opportunities and homework support in the BASE program, grades K-6.

Leslie Dunn & Angela Nobile - Tower Street School Community Center

Business Department Grant - The Westerly High School Business Department will

purchase an iPad point of sale system which will aide in re-branding the school store and

support the business program.

Ed Hathaway - Westerly High School

Generator & Tent for Culinary Arts - The Westerly High School's award-winning

Culinary Arts Program has been servicing functions off-site and will be purchasing a

generator and tent to enhance opportunities and improve self-sufficiency.

Chef Finkelstein - Westerly High School

Science Education Initiative - Tower Street School Community Center will purchase

scientific tools to enhance learning in chemistry, weather, ecosystems, physics and

biology. These tools will benefit students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 and other Tower

Street participants.

Jennifer Gautam & Donna Nabb - Tower Street School Community Center

Grow & Go Seek Bench Swing - Tower Street School Community Center will purchase

a bench swing to add to their outdoor classroom, serving as a sensory piece which invites

caregivers to share children's enjoyment of the outdoors while providing rhythmic

movement to develop coordination, balance, core strength, and body awareness.

Laura Elson - Tower Street School Community Center

Meeting English Language Arts Common Core Standards Through

Social Studies - This proposal is for a large set of books at various levels to enhance the

Native American social studies curriculum and integrate critical reading skills for 3rd

graders at Dunn's Corners Elementary School. Instructional materials will include

non-fiction texts, read aloud and narratives.

Theresa Watson - Dunn's Corners Elementary School

WHS Construction Proposal - This proposal seeks construction equipment that will

provide a more efficient way of manufacturing items. Among many other projects, the

manufacturing technologies program at Westerly High School builds sets for theater

productions, town beach lifeguard stands, and picnic tables for the town of Westerly.

Additionally, some funds will go towards building a shed behind the WHS shop which will

be used to store equipment and materials, opening up more classroom space for the

manufacturing technologies program.
