The HistoryMany people experimented with makingmicroscopes

Was the microscope originally made byaccident? (Most people were creatingtelescopes)

The first microscope was 6 feet long!!!

The Greeks & Romans used lenses tomagnify objects over 1000 years ago.

    The History

Hans and Zacharias Janssen of Hollandin the 1590s created the firstcompound microscope

Anthony van Leeuwenhoek and RobertHooke made improvements by workingon the lenses

    How a Microscope Works

Convex Lenses arecurved glass used to

    make microscopes(and glasses etc.)

Convex Lenses bendlight and focus it inone spot.

How a Microscope WorksOcular Lens(Magnifies Image)

    Objective Lens(Gathers Light,Magnifies

And Focuses ImageInside Body Tube)Body Tube

    (Image Focuses)

Bending Light : The objective (bottom) convex lensmagnifies and focuses (bends) the image inside thebody tube and the ocular convex (top) lens of amicroscope magnifies it (again).

    Body Tube

The body tube holds the objectivelenses and the ocular lens at the proper distance

    Objective Lenses

The Objective Lenses increasemagnification (usually from 10x to 40x)

    Stage Clips

These 2 clips hold the slide/specimen inplace on the stage.

    Diaphragm

The Diaphragm controls the amount of light on the slide/specimen

Turn to let more light in or tomake dimmer.

    Light Source

Projects light upwards through thediaphragm, the specimen and thelensesSome have lights, others have mirrorswhere you must move the mirror toreflect light

    Magnification

To determine your magnificationyou just multiply the ocular lens by theobjective lensOcular 10x Objective 40x:10 x 40 = 400

Objective Lens havetheir magnificationwritten on them.

Ocular lenses usually magnifies by 10x

So the object is 400 times larger

Caring for a MicroscopeClean only with a soft cloth/tissue

Make sure its on a flat surface

    Dont bang it

Carry it with 2 HANDSone on the armand the other on the base

    Using a Microscope

Start on the lowest magnificationDont use the coarse adjustment knob

on high magnificationyoull break theslide!!!Place slide on stage and lock clips

Adjust light source (if its a mirrordontstand in front of it!)Use fine adjustment to focus
