BATH TOWELS AND SAFETY PINS — In this time of crisis, upheaval, uncertainty and confusion, I realize that this headline seems totally out of the ballpark, but if you stay with me for a few lines, I’ll try to tie it all together, hopefully in an amusing way. After all, who couldn’t use a laugh or two right now?

You see, as a kid, I drove my mother crazy by constantly asking for a bath towel and safety pin. “What? What are you going to do with those?”, she would always ask but knew the

answer before even asking the question. “Mom! Superman always wears a cape! It’s what makes him fly faster and jump higher than ANY-BODY! I want to be just like him!” Of course, the next sound the neighborhood would hear would be me, moaning and wailing, writhing in pain, laying at the base of the apple tree, hav-ing just jumped from the branch that was 10 feet off the ground. If you were ever a fan of Superman, I dare you to try to remember if the word OUCH was heard from his lips. As I look back, and were my mother alive today to agree with me, I’m glad I never took that bullet proof nonsense seriously.

After a while, and many black and blue bruises later, I began to question the credibility of the dude in the blue suit. I mean, what if there were no telephone booths close by? With the advent of cell phones, Superman was pretty much out of a job. Yes, this all took place back in the early to late fifties, but one can still wonder, right? Besides, there was this millionaire who had a really cool car that could do just about any-thing coming down the pike. He always man-aged to foil the foe, so to speak, even though it took him, most times, two weeks to do so. Bat-man was his name. He had a cool cape too, but more importantly, he had this awesome mask that would truly conceal his true identity. Let’s just say that many, many washrags disappeared from our bathroom at home, and, I can’t tell you the number of toolbelts my dad had come

up missing, although they would eventually turn up in our garage, stuffed with all kinds of crime fighting apparatus.

As for the towel, if you wore it long ways down your back, one end safety pinned around your neck, you could be Superman. If you wore it draped across your shoulders and pinned in the front, you could be Batman.

But, what about the mask? Well, in today’s world and if you can find one, we leave those for the true super heroes of today, the extreme frontline workers who step up with heart, cour-age, and spirit in order to care for the sickest of the sick. In my opinion, and once this tormen-tor of a virus settles down, each and every one of those doctors, nurses, lab technicians, etc. deserve a medal of recognition. To be politi-cally correct, the “Batpersons” and “Superper-sons” of today are my new super heroes. They are working tirelessly to combat this dreadful contagion amongst us, and they each deserve a well earned pat on the back. Hang in there, ladies and gentlemen. Better times lie ahead. Finally during a conversation regarding the coronavirus with my daughter this past week-end, she reminded me of one very important fact; “Dad, at the end of the day, not all heroes wear capes”. Stay Safe

-Kevin
