School Overview

Sacred Heart Parish Primary School has served the Parish of Sacred Heart Oakleigh for over eighty

years. It was opened in 1934 by the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions and offers quality, Catholic

education to children from diverse cultures. Gospel values of generosity of spirit, honesty,

cooperation, courtesy, diligence, persistence and respect are emphasised. The competent staff

use innovative, challenging approaches, through a broad, integrated curriculum based on the

Victorian Curriculum, to stimulate students to become independent, creative thinkers who are

able to listen critically and justify their own opinion with confidence. This is supported by open

dialogue with parents and students. Continual upgrading of school facilities enhances our

information communication technology, design and technology, visual and performing arts and

physical development programs. Self-belief and emotional wellbeing are valued in our school

community through programs such as Circle Time, student leadership, the Bounce Back program

and buddy programs. Strong community involvement and engagement of parents, students and

staff is encouraged.

Christ’s teaching is at the core of the curriculum and influences the way we teach and interact as

a staff as well as students and is evident in our parent community.

Our school recognizes the importance of the ‘home-school-parish’ partnership. Our Parish Priest,

Rev. John Magri works closely with the Religious Education Leader and staff to support the faith

development of the school community, especially in the preparation for the sacraments. Parents

are involved throughout this process. Topics related to the particular sacrament are taught in all

classes within the school and classes come together to celebrate at a school assembly.

The family values of generosity, honesty, compassion, courtesy and respect for self, others and

property are emphasised and practised by providing a welcoming, accepting, affirming

environment in which Gospel values are linked to day-to-day living. Staff are expected to lead by

example.

COMMUNITY DEMOGRAPHICS

At Sacred Heart School we value and respect cultural diversity. Our school emphasizes gospel

values of generosity, honesty, cooperation, courtesy, diligence and respect for self, others and

property. Opportunities are provided for the development of community spirit among staff,

parents and students. Sacred Heart community is a microcosm of Australia’s multi-cultural

society. All students and staff members share, as part of their uniqueness, a cultural identity that

stems from their history and this is acknowledged and valued. 67.2% of our students have a

Language Background Other Than English (LBOTE) with Greek, Mandarin, Italian, Tamil,

Vietnamese, Hindi, Arabic, French and Russian also spoken. Many attend language classes at the

weekend.

We have a mix of religions with mostly Catholic children followed by Greek Orthodox and Other

Christians. A small number of other faith traditions are also included among our children. Catholic

families have enrolment priority at Sacred Heart as outlined in our Enrolment Policy. Many

parents went to Catholic schools and want their children to experience the religious ethos of the

school. The students mix very well despite age, race, ability and belief. They support and

encourage each other to achieve their best. Children are very generous and are keen to raise

money for charities. We have a number of single parent families and this has increased over the

past several years as have the number of single child families.

Overall the average student attendance rate is 92.5 % which indicates consistency over the last

few years. In 2018 there were 32 funded integration students and a significant number of other

students who have support from various outside agencies although they did not qualify for any

funding. Teachers and students are supported by the knowledge and expertise of our Student

Services Leader, a psychologist who visits and Learning Support Officers/ Integration Aide for

each level. Teacher Aides support classes with larger sizes.

A Student Wellbeing Team supports the special needs of students, staff and families in the school.

Students regularly present at assembly their learning activities to the school community.

Students have many opportunities to experience Leadership roles in their own class through the

practice of cooperative group work.

Twelve classes, consisted of

• two Foundation classes

• three Level 1-2 classes

• three Level 3-4 classes

• four Level 5-6 classes.

Specialist teachers are employed for Visual Arts, LOTE - Italian, Physical Education. Additional

support roles include Student Services and Reading Recovery.

The School runs a Buddy program with all classes partnered with another class to foster cross age

relationships across the school.

The Online newsletter, CareMonkey app, Skoolbag app as well as the introduction of Seesaw

student digital portfolios and Google Drive and Apps Packages have assisted parents and students

in accessing key information from all digital devices.

Principal’s Report

Sacred Heart School is flourishing and continues to be an inspiration to many families and schools in the area. The children have many opportunities above and beyond the curriculum that help to make our school a community. Based on Gospel values, students are challenged to find meaning and value in their lives and reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society who are highly skilled, informed, tolerant, open and just. A faith and values approach underpin Religious Education which is an integral part of life of the school and curriculum.

Sacred Heart provides high-quality academic teaching for all students, giving due emphasis on fundamental literacy and numeracy skills required for both learning and life based on the Victorian Curriculum. Our dedicated teachers and staff are one of the great strengths of our school community and are recognised as being caring and willing to ‘go the extra mile’ for our students. Our 2018 NAPLAN results for student achievement in Year 3 and 5 indicate we are at, above or substantially above student achievement against all Victorian students in reading, writing and numeracy. Our student performance data reflects excellent outcomes in English and Mathematics.

A focus on student growth continues across all areas of the curriculum, particularly in literacy and numeracy. Student learning and achievement is continually monitored and measured across the school. A range of assessment and diagnostic tools are used to identify individual learning needs, improve student performance and develop learning programs. Level teaching teams continue to use performance data to inform planning and teaching to meet the students’ individual points of need to differentiate their teaching. Targeted and explicit learning activities are developed for literacy and numeracy sessions.

The school reinforces respect for self and others promoted through a well-disciplined environment that is conducive to quality teaching and learning. Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is a priority and is formally integrated into the curriculum and is recognised as fundamental to success in learning and life. The school has made significant inroads in ‘child safe’ work aimed at protecting children from abuse. This work also helps raise awareness of child safety in the school community.

Our school is a welcoming, inclusive, and connected community. It provides a genuine, safe and caring experience of community. We work in close partnership with parents and guardians, the Parish and the local community to achieve desired outcomes. Our school is affordable and keeps fees as low as possible so that more families can choose a Catholic education for is their children. Recent changes to CEM support allow health care card recipients to have a major discount on school fees. No child is refused a Catholic education due to financial difficulty.

Sacred Heart Student Engagement is continually promoted throughout the school through stimulating and motivating programs such as Inter School sports program, Arts show, Reading Recovery and our Student Leadership program. Lunch time clubs include chess, book club, gardening, dance, skipping, construction, lunch time sports, clay club and inter-house sport round robins. ‘Student Voice’ has been evident through the student leadership projects, clubs and circle time sessions.

The previous 12 months have been filled with energy and enthusiasm that has kept the Education

our School Communication Strategy. Part of the process was to evaluate ways in which we

currently disseminate information to our families and determine how we can improve this

process to create more effective and efficient communication channels. As part of a 9 stage plan

a subcommittee was formed to identify strategies to deliver relevant and meaningful

communications to families at Sacred Heart Primary School. I am pleased to say that through

hard work and dedication, the School Education Board has now delivered a set of key

recommendations to the school leadership team for review and implementation. We hope that

this process together with the community’s input will continually improve our effectiveness in

communication within our school community.

The School Education Board has also reviewed and provided feedback on various policies and

guidelines such as the Social Media Policy and Guidelines, Child Safe Policy, Transition and

Induction of Staff and Students and the Wellbeing Policy. The Board Members were also involved

in a trial implementation of the Child Safe Policy and in particular the Volunteer application and

recruitment process. These policies and guidelines form an integral part of the school’s

governance, so I thank each one of you for your time, dedication and valuable input.

To those of you who are continuing to stay on the Education Board, I would like to thank you for

doing so and wish you well. To those considering joining us, I would like to assure you that it is

an extremely rewarding experience to be part of the School Education Board. Our members all

come from different working backgrounds and our breadth of skills has enabled us to achieve

some great outcomes which benefit our school community. To have an understanding of what

happens “behind the scenes” enables us to have a more holistic picture of our school community

and I highly recommend it.

I am sincerely proud of what the School Education Board has achieved to date. So, in closing I

thank you all for your continued efforts and support, and wish you well for the forthcoming year.
