OUR PHILOSOPHY:TAILOR-MADECOURSES
5
Everyone is different...With this in mind we appreciate that no two learners are the same. For many years the tradition has been to match a learner to a course, but, as we all know, one size does not fit all!
Our courses are now tailored to meet the individual needs of every learner. All you need to do is apply for the subject of your choice and we will work out the level of course using your predicted and actual GCSE results and other qualifications. Maths and English are essential subjects, if you missed out on gaining an A-C grade at school these will be studied alongside your main course to give you more opportunities in the future.
Whatever level you need to start at, if you just missed out on a grade or if you need more stretch and challenge, our courses will be tailored just for you to ensure your learning success.
Making Grimsby Institute the perfect fit!
6 Career Guide 2016/176
DOES MEAN?
WHAT
IT ALL
To help make this information as easy to understand as possible, here are some explanations of the different terms that we use throughout this guide:
Labour Market Intelligence (LMI) - Everyone is talking about LMI nowadays. It uses the trends and facts about an area’s past and present employment to predict what the future of an industry may look like.
Entry requirements - This means what qualifications or experience you will need to start at a certain level of the course you are thinking about.
Levels - We talk about levels in reference to our courses as a way to explain how difficult they are. As you train at each level your knowledge of that area will increase and we will ensure you are fully prepared to move up to the next level.
This is explained in more detail under Entry Requirements on Page 28. Our Further Education courses start at Entry Level and progress to Level 3 and in some areas Level 4.
Apprenticeships - Apprenticeships available in this area.
Throughout this guide you will find lots of information about the courses we offer, different career options and important facts about employment in different industries.
Jargon Buster
APFT
7
Statistics - Statistics are facts and figures that give you information in order to make informed choices.
Annual salary - Throughout the guide we give you an approximate idea of how much you could earn every year. We have also broken this down into how much you could earn at various points throughout your career in your chosen area.
Skills-base – These are the set of skills an individual has or may need in the future.
Skills shortage – This means that a certain industry or career area may have a shortage of people with the necessary skills to do a job.
Replacement demand – This means the number of people needed to take over the jobs of people who are leaving or retiring from a certain careeror industry.

Our learners are given a voice through schemes such as the introduction of Learner Representatives and the coaching and training programme ‘Developing the expert Learner Representative’. Learner Representatives themselves comment on how the Learner Voice is heard, and are encouraged to interact with others, this gives all of our learners someone their own age to talk to and ask for advice when they need it.
Why not become a Learner Representative yourself and get the chance to have your say?
VOICELEARNER
The Learner Voice is heard through our Learner Voice Strategy, which includes the Student Union, and sees high-profile activities such as Learner Teaching and Learning Conferences and meetings with the Principal that take place throughout the year. At Meet the Principal forums, learners are invited to talk about the good aspects of the Institute and discuss the things they think should be changed. Scott decided to enrol for a BTEC Applied Science when he was offered a job as an Apprentice on a local refinery. Having developed a keen interest in space when he saw Comet Hale-Bopp in 1987, Scott has been inspired by his course and tutors and now hopes to go to university and study for a career in Astronomy. Scott said:“I was never a strong learner at school but I’ve now got a taste for education and have realised it’s something I really enjoy. My tutors have really inspired me to go to university and the course has given me background to Science that I refused to learn at school.”

Bricklaying is a successful and rewarding career. The UK is currently in need of Bricklayers, with many companies finding there is a short supply of Bricklayers who have the relevant qualifications and skills to do the job. The number of houses being built is set to rise by 20.2% by 2018 so there is expected to be a high demand for Construction Industry Trades. Sam, a former learner at St Andrew’s College, now the Holy Family Catholic Academy, is an Apprentice with APS Builders. Sam won 1st Place in Intermediate Brickwork at the Matchfit competition. Sam explained why he chose the Apprenticeship route and entered the competition:“I decided to apply for an Apprenticeship because I thought it was the best way for me to improve my skills and earn money while I was learning. It lets you build up your skills and knowledge of working onsite and with experienced bricklayers.
“For Matchfit we were given a plan of a model and then we had to build it. It was like a flowerbed with a soldier arch and soldier courses, a lot of technical work. It took me six hours to build it and I was confident that I’d done well. I feel really happy to have won.”

Danielle is only 19 and is the first ever female to complete the Level 3 Carpentry & Joinery qualification at the Institute. Danielle has already got a full-time job with Howarth Timber making windows and doors and she is now planning on returning to University Centre Grimsby in a few years to study for a HNC and eventually become a Building Inspector. Danielle said: “I’ve definitely enjoyed my time here, the tutors have just been amazing. I wanted to leave the Institute and get straight into a job and that’s exactly what I’ve done, I wouldn’t have been able to get through it without them. The environment in which we train is fantastic, being a girl I thought it would be difficult but the Institute has given me the chance to be what I want to be.”

Twenty-year-old, Lauren Brewitt, is now a Level 3 Teaching Assistant after training as an Apprentice for her Level 2 & 3 qualifications with the Grimsby Institute. Lauren said: “I’d always wanted to work with children with disabilities. I used to go to Yarborough Academy when I was a child myself and while I was training in Childcare at the Grimsby Institute I volunteered at the school to see if I enjoyed it. I really enjoyed it and then I got introduced to the idea of doing an Apprenticeship. I was an Apprentice for three years and I really enjoyed it. I love coming to work and
it so rewarding. I have my own groups now and it’s great to see them progressing. I think I’d like to work with children with Autism but I want to go to university and then decide which way to specialise.”

ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION
A career as an Electrician is ideal for someone who is physically fit and doesn’t mind working in small spaces. But, if you like the idea of being out and about, going from site to site and getting stuck into the day’s work then being an Electrician is a cracking choice. Because of the inherent safety issues involved with electrical installations it is tightly regulated by the Government and has a strict set of qualifications that you must achieve in order to work as an Electrician.
As a result of this, it can be complicated to become a qualified Electrician, but that’s why they are in such high demand and short supply, this is why they’re among the most well-paid of all Construction trades.
Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts. Winston Churchill

Ellis, a former pupil at the Lindsey School in Cleethorpes, took part in the Level 3 Hair & Media Make-up Competition during her training, coming an overall 2nd Place with her dramatic crow-like creation. Ellis said: “We were asked to create an animalistic character with a fantasy element, so I decided to produce a crow or raven and make it look a bit gothic. The competition is great because it gives you an idea of what you can do and what you need to do to succeed.” Ellis’s success has seen her enrol at the University Centre Grimsby for the BA Special Effects Make-up for TV, Theatre and Film degree programme and she hopes to become a Special Effects Make-up Artist when she graduates.
