shared hosting chores with Pi-mentel in another iconic showStudent Canteen from 1966 to1965, agreed: “In spite of hisbiyenan digs, Pepe loved hismother-in-law deeply. We salutehim.”
Another TV host, Amy Perezsaid “I owe what I know as ahost to Tito Pepe. He taught meeverything I should know to beeffective.”
Stand-up comedian Jon San-tos said Pimentel was his “firstboss” on the noontime showTayo’y Magsaya, which was co-hosted by another respectedveteran, Sylvia La Torre. “I wasan assistant on the show then.Tito Pepe showed incrediblemastery of the Pinoy gameshow. He knew its ins andouts,” Santos recalled.
Comedian Willie Nepomu-
ceno remembered Pimentel asan outspoken mentor. “If youare aspiring to be a performer, get ready to get a lecture fromhim on the proper conduct ofan entertainer. He would oftenunleash a mouthful because hetook great pride in his job.”
“He also took an activist’sstand on public issues and wasa true public servant,” Roaadded.
Batangas governor andaward-winning actress VilmaSantos said Pimentel “left anenduring mark in the local en-tertainment industry. He intro-duced game shows on localtelevision. He was a pioneer.”
GMA 7 chair and chief execu-tive officer Felipe L. Gozon re-membered the late host “as agreat comedian and singer ofSpanish songs,” while singer Ce-leste Legaspi remembered his“beautiful baritone voice. I lovedhis rendition of Granada.”
Nepomuceno pointed out an-other accomplishment: “He wasthe first grand national champi-on of Tawag ng Tangahalan (anamateur singing contest popularin the 1960s). He was a true-blue entertainer.”
“I can smell talent a mileaway and when I met him, Iknew he was good,” said anoth-er popular TV host of the peri-od, Eddie Ilarde of Student Can-teen fame.
Ilarde recalled meeting Pi-mentel for the first time in1954, when Student Canteen, originally a radio show on dzXL,was about to break into TV.
“Pepe was a comedian’s co-median,” said Ilarde, also a for-mer senator. “He’s one of thefew people who could make melaugh. He’s a clown, a mimic, one of the best, really. I justdon’t know whether he studiedhis craft. He was dedicated andhardworking; never a day didhe came late for work.”

T O GO by his trademark punch line, his mother-in-law must be having the last laugh.
like jackpot prizes from a box aspeers in show biz rememberedthe good times with game showhost Pepe Pimentel, who died athis Quezon City home Thursdaymorning.
Jose Antonio Pimentel was82.
The veteran comic, champi-on singer, and community lead-er is best remembered for mak-ing Kwarta o Kahon a pioneer-ing concept in Philippine televi-sion, where contestants get tochose between a cash prize andwhat’s inside a sealedbox—which may be a biggerprize or a mere piece of egg-plant, a can of sardines andother tokens for the unlucky.
Supt. Marcelino Pedrozo Jr.of the Quezon City Police Dis-trict’s Kamuning station said Pi-mentel was found dead with awound at the back of his headinside the bathroom of hishouse on Scout Tuazon Street inBarangay Laging Handa around10:30 a.m.
Pimentel’s nephew JessieSantos said his uncle, who wasnot suffering from any seriousillness, apparently slipped andhit his head on the floor.
Pimentel earlier spent Thurs-day morning walking aroundthe neighborhood in BarangayLaging Handa, where he waselected chair in 1997 and heldthe post for 10 years. Neighborswould often see him sweepingthe sidewalk himself or riddingthe streets of election campaignposters that end up as eyesores.
“It was his usual custom towalk around the neighborhoodin the morning,” Santos told re-porters. “My uncle was a goodman. He was able to help many
of our relatives in their studies.”Aside from hosting Kwarta,
which ran from the 1970s to2000, Pimentel is also knownfor his “biyenan” jokes—eventhough colleagues say he reallyadores his real-life biyenan off-screen.
Encar Benedicto-Ordoñez, Pi-mentel’s cohost for 11 years, said “I will miss his punch linesabout his biyenan. He would of-ten show us a photo of a mon-key or an orang-utang and jokethat it’s his mother-in-law’s por-trait. In reality, he cared for hiswife’s mom.”
