Ayon sa pinakahuling pag-babago sa diksiyunaryo, “evi-dence for these usages is not

just found in the Philippines butalso in parts of the UnitedStates that have large Filipinopopulations.”

Itinuturing ang diksiyunaryobilang “definitive record of theEnglish language.”

Sinabi ni Hiphip R. Bael III:“This is good news. Finally, some Filipino slang, terms, and

languages are included in theEnglish Dictionary. At least we

are a part of the evolution of the English language.”

    “Sumalosep! Aren’t they going

to include ‘jejemon?’ Waaahh!,”ani Selwyn Clyde M. Alojipan.

“I hope they include

W ITH their powerful impact on audiences, films can help bridge divisions and settledifferences.

This was the message thatBriccio Santos, chair of the FilmDevelopment Council of thePhilippines (FDCP), wished toimpart to guests at the openingof the World Premieres FilmFestival Philippines (WPFFP) onWednesday night.

Only on its second year, theWPFFP aims to bring togetherdifferent countries in a world-class festival.

the “unmistakable impact onthe audience of moving im-ages.” Hence, the inclusion of more films in the festival.

A notable addition is theClassics section, featuring sevenrestored films from Indonesia,India, Sri Lanka, Senegal, theformer Soviet Republic of Arme-nia and the Philippines.

filmmakers talked of the situa-tion of the film industries intheir countries.

Director Remy van Heugten(“Son of Mine”) of the Nether-lands noted the big differencein sales between commercialand the more artistic films.

“We produce between 30 to35 movies a year. Half of theseare commercially made, whichdraw a lot of people,” he toldreporters. “Producers of themore artistic films have to real-ly work to get the audience’s at-tention.”

Van Heugten said his film“eventually did well (in the boxoffice). Still there’s a big differ-ence in ticket sales, whichshould not be the case.”

Piracy a big problemIn Spain, less and less people

are going to the movie houses,

said director Anna Bofarull(“Sonata for Cello”). “Our in-dustry is big, but it’s changingnow. Getting financial supportfrom the government has be-come more difficult. Budget forartistic movies is always low.(And) promotion is still diffi-cult.”

Bofarull cited piracy as a ma- jor industry problem.

“People download contentand don’t pay,” she pointed out.

    “The government does very lit-

tle to address this. The law isnot strong enough to protect

    the artists.”Bofarull said the mainstream

audience preferred to see come-dy and thriller films producedby private entities. “This is why festivals like this one is really important to us filmmakers.”

Pressure from HollywoodTaiwanese director Li Da-hsu

(“The End of Love”) said hecould not call theirs a film in-dustry “because it is too small.”

    “About 50 films are produced

in a year but only 30 getshown. Local productions feelthe pressure from big Holly-

wood films. Art movies sufferthe most because it is alwayshard for them to secure spon-sors,” he stressed.

“However, we get lucky sometimes, especially recently

when a Taiwanese won best di-rector in Cannes.”

Da-hsu was referring to therecent victory of Hou Hsiao-hsen for his martial arts film“The Assassins” at the presti-gious Cannes International FilmFestival in France.

Sadly there is not enoughaudience in Turkish movies, said director Burak Cem Arliel(“Crimean”). “We have a largefilm industry. However, they pa-tronize comedy more than dra-ma. Also, people prefer watch-ing through the Internet. Artistsdo not get paid for those down-loaded films. Sadly, rules in

Turkey are not too strict,” hepointed out.

Prizes at stakeThe films will compete for

the Grand Festival Prize, GrandJury Prize, as well as awards forbest actor, best actress, bestartistic contribution, technicalgrand prize and best ensembleperformance.

Pure, humble and sincereHE spoke from the heart and got his message across: It’s never been and will nev-er be about money. Manny Pacquiao, for all his wealth, influence, fame and ac-claim, remains humble, pure and sincere. The Congressman from Sarangani, box-ing’s only eight-division world champion, captivated around 200 Inquirer bigwigsand employees at the PDI pantry Wednesday night with a brief tale of the hard-ships he had to go through as a child and even as a teenager. Pacquiao, perhapsfor the benefit of non-sports fans, narrated how he slept on cardboard boxes withan empty stomach, reiterated that his winning purse was P50 for his first bout, then, with a grin, stop short of revealing how much he earns (hundred of millions)per fight nowadays. As to why he keeps on fighting despite his family being finan-cially secured for life, Pacquiao answered: "It’s not about the money and material

things. I just want to bring honor and pride to my country.  Roy A Luarca
