National speaker joins celebration: Touchmark opens new memory care

Author Anne P. Hill, JD, will present Top 10 Strategies: When You Care for People with Dementia Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 3 pm at Touchmark.

The public is invited to attend and be among the first to see Touchmark’s new memory care neighborhoods and meet staff. Please call 541-383-1414 to RSVP.

Anne will share the same presentation for a resident-only audience at 10:30 am that morning.

At 4 pm, Kristina Barragan, regional coordinator of the Alzheimer’s Association, will give some brief remarks, followed by tours, refreshments, and entertainment at 4:30 pm.

About Anne P. Hill, JDAnne is the author of Unforgettable Journey–Tips to Survive Your Parent’s Alzheimer’s Disease, which was based on her own experiences. She will discuss straightforward, down-to-earth strategies to cope with the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia, including how to work with medical providers. She is now a frequent speaker about Alzheimer’s and is participating in the State Plan for Alzheimer’s Disease in Oregon Task Force.

Anne is also co-author, together with Marian Hodges, MD, MPH, a nationally known

geriatrician practicing at Providence Portland Medical Center, of Help Is Here: When Someone You Love has Dementia, a notebook resource written specifically for primary care physicians to give to the family caregiver of a person with dementia.

Anne practiced law for 16 years before retiring to care for her children and her mother, who died in 2009 of end-stage Alzheimer’s disease.

Meet two prize paintersPainting is very popular at Touchmark. Recently, two residents received recognition for their painting talents at the local county fair.

Carol Piersee is a painter and weaver. She has always had an interest in art, but it wasn’t until her four children were grown and her husband retired that she had time to revisit her passion.

“My original thought was to take up acrylic painting but after taking a watercolor class on a whim, I was hooked,” says Carol, who continues to improve her skills by taking classes, watching DVDs, and reading art books.

Carol has won numerous first-place themed prizes at the Deschutes County Fair. (This award is given to the painting that best represents the fair’s yearly theme.) Along with painting, Carol loves to weave and is a proud owner of a number of looms she keeps in her studio.

Kendra West describes herself as a reluctant painter. “Just four years ago, I had never painted,” says Kendra. “Not wanting a watercolor class to be canceled, a friend called me and asked me to sit in on the class.”

Kendra agreed to attend the class, thinking she would just be a warm body. Now four years later,

Kendra looks forward to painting with a group every Monday and exploring her talent.

Kendra’s paintings have earned her first- and second-place awards at the Deschutes County Fair, a very impressive accomplishment for such a young painter.

Is it a right or a privilege—the right to happiness, that is? Whatever your interpretation of the wording of the Declaration of Independence, it has become a multimillion-dollar business to help us all find our “right to happiness.”

We may have come equipped to pursue our own version of happiness, but North Americans seem to be endowed with the pursuit-of-happiness impulse. Many have the urge to find that greener pasture or nirvana … just over the hillside (or online, for that matter).

What does that mean? It means that the outdated definition of doing more, owning more, conquering the next challenge has become an ambition to “best” our neighbors, whether by straight-out purchase or credit. The snatch-and-grab phenomenon has become a job description for many and an “oh well” for our neighbors.

Interestingly, this is not true of those who live long and well. Studies repeatedly tell us that philanthropy and a spirit of giving are essential to well-being. While it may not be the

barn-raising or neighborhood party in this day and age, the impulse to help others is deeply imbedded. All of the current studies on “happiness” bear out the fact that compassion, concern, and action (in the way of helping hands or physical donations) make a difference in the quality of life we all seek.

So, pass up the infomercials and appeals you get in your mailbox to “feel good about yourself” with this tape or class. Release even an ongoing commitment to “feel good.” Instead, contact the Full Life wellness team at Touchmark at Mt. Bachelor Village to get involved in programs and services that do make a difference.
