When Bill is traveling, Claudia has no difficulty staying active. “Two of my favorite pastimes at Touchmark include serving on the Entertainment and Dining Room committees,” she says. “Touchmark is great in that the staff ask residents for input. I enjoy brainstorming to come up with activities.

“Because Bill and I are familiar with a lot of entertainment and art venues around Spokane and Coeur d’Alene, I am able to share some fun ideas. Turkey Bingo is one such potential activity. Winners receive frozen hams, turkeys, or potatoes,” Claudia laughs. “But then, the question arises, ‘What on earth are we going to do with all this meat?’”

Bill says he’s also busy at Touchmark. “I attend SAIL exercise classes three times per week, play pinochle, go to Saturday movies (if they are good), belong to the Library Committee, and—of course—root for Gonzaga Basketball at our ‘Go Zags’ parties.

“I also have Parkinson’s and am taking a Shout it Out class at EWU that helps people with this disease communicate better,” he adds.

“Also, we just got a new NeuroCom® Balance Master® system here at Touchmark, and I am signed up for the first class they are offering to people with Parkinson’s. We are hoping for positive results.”

Living around the world The Hustrulids have five children: four now live in Florida, and one lives in Australia. At first, Claudia was a first grade teacher. In later years, she taught English as a second language to employees working for the mining company.

“I am grateful for the years we spent abroad. We have lived in the Belgian Congo, Sweden, and South Africa. And while the landscape and cultures were different from the US, some things were the same. For instance, here in Spokane, we watch for deer while driving on rural roads. In Sweden, we did the same; however, instead of watching for white tails, we

were on the lookout for reindeer!”

Choosing TouchmarkWhen Bill retired, he decided to continue consulting with the Spokane office of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. “So we moved to Spokane,” he explains.

“Some years before we moved here, my brother was the attending physician at Touchmark, and my parents were residents for about 10 years, so we visited often. We took a couple of years exploring the area—and our options—before moving to Touchmark,” he says.

“Claudia and I made our decision based on family experience and on the lively social aspect of the place. A lot of folks choose to move close to their kids, but ours are in Florida, and it’s too hot and humid for us.”

“We like the four seasons this area has to offer.”

{COLOR}FULL Living—How does your garden grow?Master gardeners are some of the most passionate, knowledgeable, and committed people I have ever met. They spend hours learning all the pros and cons of which plants need to go where. They assess soil, sun, and shade needs as well as overall balance for the environment and success for the garden. They dig in and plant—usually in their own terrain and often in the community—for a variety of causes and commitments that serve neighborhoods, cities, citizens, and wildlife and environmental goals. ...
