Toys in the 1950s
In the 1950s, lots more people started buying cars so toy cars became very popular, especially Matchbox toys. Lots of children (mostly boys) collected Matchbox cars, trucks, buses and lorries.
Children spent a lot of time playing outside in the 1950s. Girls played with skipping ropes and hula hoops that were new from America. Boys played in pedal cars or made their own toy cars to sit in made from boxes and old wheels.
There were lots of new toys that came to Britain in the 1950s, such as Play-Doh and Mr Potato Head. In the 50s, children were just given the parts of Mr Potato Head and they used real potatoes to stick the parts into to make a potato man.

Other toys that came out in the 1970s were Weebles. These were a collection of people who you could push and they wouldn’t fall over, they just wobbled. Games like Connect 4 and the Hot Wheel Cars were also invented, as well as fads such as Pet Rocks. Pet Rocks were simply rocks that were kept in a pet box!
