$3m donation
Naoki Kuroda
INPEX president NaokiKuroda arrives in Darwintomorrow to help open anew trades training centre.
He will be joined by fed-eral Resources MinisterMartin Ferguson and ChiefMinister Paul Henderson forthe ceremony on Friday.
The Japanese gas com-pany donated $3 milliontowards building the skillsschool at Winnellie.
Mr Kuroda’s decision tobe in on the opening cere-mony is seen as further evi-dence that Inpex will goahead with its $30 billionDarwin LNG project.
The trades centre is thebrainchild of the LarrakiaDevelopment Corporationand will be known as theLarrakia Trade TrainingCentre. But it is open to allwould-be apprentices andwill be a key tool in combat-ing the Territory’s shortageof skilled workers in tradit-ional trades.
Mr Kurodasaid he wasproud to be in-volved in such a‘‘first class’’venture.
He said thefunding had been agreedonly 12 months ago, but thecentre was now open – ‘‘ontime and on budget’’.
The resources boss said hewould monitor the progressof the trades school.
He said Inpex would workwith the Larrakia Develop-ment Corporation to developfurther ‘‘business and em-ployment’’ opportunities.
The trades school, whichhas already started taking inapprentices and trainees, has state-of-the-art equip-ment, including virtual ex-periences in excavator andtruck driving.
Development Corporationchairman Nigel Brown saidthe response from industrytowards the new trainingcentre had been ‘‘over-whelmingly positive’’.

The Shell boardwill make a decisionwithin comingweeks, following aperiod of consultat-ion with employees.
