And they understood society and the economy itself to be in need of healing, so after seven Sabbath years, the fiftieth year was the year of Jubilee, all debts were cancelled, all slaves set free. All the inevitable accumulation of selfishness that leaves more and more people with less and less over 49 years ended and started over, society and the economy rested and healed and started over. Life is hard and harsh, and we hurt each other, we hurt ourselves, we get beaten down, weighed down, hunched over, unable to stand up straight. But Sunday is coming. In the gospel, we hear that Jesus healed on the Sabbath. Jesus knows that Sabbath time is about breaking chains, ending bondage, healing us from all that seeks to crush or break us, to weigh us down. Sabbath isn’t about controlling each other, it’s about healing and being set free to sing God’s praises. To remember the Sabbath is to remember that I am not owned by the world, but I do belong to God—called and claimed as a beloved child of God. That’s the inspiration I need to get me through the rest of the week. Sunday is coming. The good news is that Jesus is that healing presence of God, renewing and healing all that has become broken and worn out or neglected. Jesus is the Sabbath in the flesh, the walking, breathing, Sabbath of God, the crowning jewel adorning all creation, the Inspirer of our days and our praise. Sunday is coming. Don’t forget to remember the Sabbath and I hope you join me in the healing time of Church, food, visiting, and sitting around.

TRINITY TIDINGS

Remember the Sabbath day, and keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God; you shall not do any work . . . Exodus 20:8-9

O Day of rest and gladness, O day of joy and light, O balm for care and sadness, most beautiful, most bright: on you the high and lowly, through ages joined in tune, sing, “Holy, holy, holy,” to the great God triune. --Christopher Wordsworth, ELW Hymn 521 vs. 1

The Sabbath is the inspirer, the other days the inspired. Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel from The Sabbath

Sunday. Sabbath time. When I was a child, Sundays seemed to go on and on; it was a day that lasted forever. Church, Sunday dinner at Grandma’s, maybe some time to play, usually a ride or a walk to the Hansen’s delicatessen for cold cuts and salads for supper and school lunches, a ride to the bakers for rolls. But mostly it just seemed to me as a kid that there wasn’t much to do or anywhere to go. Church, food, visiting, sitting around.

I understand now the gift of a day to renew all the relationships that got worn out or neglected during the week.

Taking time to let the body heal and the mind to grow clear again. To meet God again after all the complications, sins, trespasses, gray areas, harms and wounds of a week of trying to survive. Of renewing the ties that bind in marriage and family and community and friendship, after a week of bumping and colliding into each other or forgetting about each other. A day with time to renew all the relationships that had gotten worn out or neglected during the week. Church, food, visiting, sitting around.

Sabbath time. It might seem boring, but for those with eyes to see and ears to hear, it is the healing presence of God, the antidote or remedy of eternity. The last day of creation, after six days of creating, God rested on the 7th, the crowning jewel of creation, the final act, the frosting on the cake, Sabbath time, time to rest, to recover, to heal.

The rest of the week wears us out, runs us down, our relationships grow stretched, we accumulate wounds, we hurt one another. But Sunday is coming, Sabbath time, time to heal, to renew all that we managed to break during the week, creation starting over every week.

The ancient Hebrews even understood the healing rest of the Sabbath to apply to the environment, to the land, every seventh year the land was to rest, lay fallow, to heal.

THE TIDINGS

The Sundays of

Time After Pentecost Around the Cross—Beside Still Waters A time of healing and renewal

From the end of May through June 19th, we encounter Jesus bringing healing for those who suffer in mind, body or spirit.

We will light candles during the Eucharist as we pray together for the coming of Christ’s reign of healing and renewal in our lives and in our world.

God be near us as we travel and help us when we fall; in the chaos that surrounds us send your hope through it all.

Be mercy for our madness at the world and ones we love, a gentle rain of healing from above.

--Dakota Road

PENTECOST II, May 29 Revive our faith, we pray; heal our bodies and mend our communities . . . God hears every prayer—the prayer of the outsider as well as the prayer of the insider. The attentive nature of our God is evident as God comes to us again and again in the word and in the supper.

PENTECOST III, June 5 My God, I cried out to you, and you restored me to health . . . Jesus raises the widow of Nain’s son from the dead. What does it mean to come to life again? The psalmist sings about God removing our sackcloth and then clothing us with joy. In baptism our “sackcloth” is taken off and we are clothed with the risen Christ. Today’s texts celebrate God’s ability and intention to provide us with a new lease on life.

PENTECOST IV, June 12 Deliver us from the death of sin, and raise us to new life . . . The enormity of our sin is surpassed only by the mercy of God. We come, repentant, to the table of the Lord. Through a dramatic encounter of rich and poor, righteous and sinner, Jesus teaches the relationship between receiving mercy and responding with a lavish outpouring of love.

PENTECOST V, June 19 Litany and Blessing of Fathers and All Men We bring before you the cries of a sorrowing world . . . We feel powerless when life’s storms rage about us. In the gospel, the man with demons was unable to help himself and had to rely on Jesus to free him. In his letter to the Galatians, Paul reflects on being “imprisoned” and “guarded,” but then restored. These texts recount the journey from bondage to freedom, from death to new life.

PENTECOST VI, JUNE 26 10:30 AM Holy Communion

with Rite of Godspeed for George Moser, Minister of Music Immediately following the worship service, brunch will be served in the Fellowship Hall

in honor of George’s retirement. Brunch will be hosted by the Worship and Music Ministry Team. We have no good apart from God. That makes our Lord’s call to follow him an invitation to freedom.

This is freedom to revel in the Spirit’s fruits: love, joy, peace, patience . . . This is the path of life.

Our next selection is The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto, and is written by one of our favorite authors, Mitch Albom. The summary below is adapted from goodreads.com.

“Albom creates a magical world through his love of music in this remarkable new novel about the power of talent to change our lives. It’s the story of Frankie Presto—the greatest guitar player who ever lived—and the six lives he changed with his six magical blue strings.

Frankie was born in a burning church, abandoned as an infant, and raised by a music teacher in a small Spanish town, until war rips his life apart. At nine years old, he is sent to America in the bottom of a boat. His only possession is an old guitar and six precious strings. His amazing journey weaves him through the musical landscape of the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s, with his stunning playing and singing talent affecting numerous stars (Duke Ellington, Hank Williams, Elvis Presley) until, as if predestined, he becomes a pop star himself. Understanding the gift he has and that, through his music, he can actually affect people’s lives, he is tortured by his biggest mistake and vanishes. Decades later, after his heart has healed, he reappears to change one last life before his own death. With the Spirit of Music as our guide, we get a glimpse into the lives that were changed by one man whose strings could touch the music—and the magic—in each of us.

A lifelong musician, Mitch Albom’s passion shines through on every page. Heartrending and inventive, this latest book is infused with the message that “everyone joins a band in this life”—and that music, like love, has the power to affect us all.”

We will meet in the multipurpose room at Holy Trinity on Friday, June 10, at 6:30 PM. As always, we look forward to welcoming you and to hearing your recommendations for our next book selection.

First Tuesday Evening Prayer 7:30 PM

June 7* Sabbath Time

Taizé services are meaningful and moving, and are based upon silent and spoken prayer, special music and moments of contemplation. This service is for anyone who finds that the hectic pace of life is drowning out God’s voice in their life. Started in France after WWII, Taizé prayer is a beautiful practice that can open hearts and minds toward God through singing simple chants, Scripture readings, times of quiet contemplation, and intercessory prayer.

Join us for 30 peaceful minutes of simple chant, prayer, and silence.

*final Taizé service before Summer Break First Tuesday Taizé Evening Prayer

will return in October.

Meeting New Friends

On April 24, representatives and volunteers from the PII (Peace Island Institute) Center for Interfaith in Hasbrouck Heights joined us for a Friendship Gathering. PII is a community service organization inspired by Turkish Islamic scholar and intellectual thinker, Fethullah Gulen, who is the spiritual leader of a civic society movement called the Gulen Movement. The Movement is active in as many non-Muslim as Muslim countries with participants of diverse faiths and cultures and seeks to bring together different viewpoints and voices with the spirit of mutual respect and acceptance in order to promote education, friendship and harmony, to build bridges between communities.

About twelve PII members and volunteers attended worship with us, provided a video presentation about their organization during coffee fellowship, and brought some traditional Turkish foods for us to enjoy. It was a wonderful opportunity to promote under-standing, fellowship and peacemaking.

You can find out more about the Peace Island Institute organization at www.peaceislands.org.

Looking ahead to September 2016 . . . A new Confirmation curriculum from Sparkhouse.

Fearless faith formation Hands-on investigative learning that leads to deep engagement with the Bible, church history, and Lutheran theology.

Problem–based learning helps students answer the question, "So what?" Problem–based learning allows students to discover for themselves the history and richness of the Bible, God, and faith. Students are invited to bring their questions and curiosity to every class.

Changes the way students think about faith and the Bible. Rather than faith being handed over as an established set of facts to be learned and memorized, it’s presented as a path of growth and discovery. That’s an experience that will stay with them long after they leave class.

Student and Parent Orientation to Confirmation: Monday, September 26, at 7 PM. Confirmation Class will be presented to the congregation on Sunday, October 2. Classes will resume for 7th/8th Grade students on Mondays at 4 PM beginning October 3.

SOMETHING NEW . . .

Pre-Confirmation Class for 5th/6th Grade Students A fun introduction to some important and interesting people and their stories in the Bible. This is a one-year class designed as a preparation for beginning Confirmation studies in 7th Grade.

Give thanks for Fathers and give thanks to God, our heavenly Father!

Father’s Day will soon be here. It’s June 19th this year. It’s a day when we give thanks for the many important

things that dads do for us.

There are lots of things that remind us of what dads do for us . . .

For instance, a (wrench) is used for fixing things. Many dads are good at fixing

things that are broken around the house.

Then, there’s a (baseball mitt). Some dads like to help us play different sports or

games with us.

How about (money)? Although some dads work at home, many dads have a job

that they work at that helps provide money for the family. That money can be

used to buy food, clothing and many other good things.

Most dads have a (car). This car reminds us that dads often help drive us to

different places, to our after-school activities, to visit family, to the doctor and

to our favorite vacation spot.

These are just a few of the things that dads like to do for us, but each dad has their own special way of helping

us out. Father's Day is the perfect time to remember all that dads do and to take time to say “thank you” to

them. If you don’t have a dad living with you, make sure you say “thank you” to all the people that help look after

you – maybe a big brother, an uncle, a grandpa or even a good family friend.

The Bible says that all of us have God as a father, too. Although we can’t see him, he is real. He knows us, he

watches over us, and he loves us so much. So, don’t forget to take some time on Father’s Day to say “thank you”

to your dad or whoever looks after you. But, also, take time to say thank you to God, our heavenly Father,

because he is looking after us, too.

The people that take care of us like it when we say “thank you” to them. God likes us to talk to him and he likes

to hear us say “thank you” to him, too. That’s what we do when we pray. We talk to God. Below is a prayer that

you can say on Father’s Day but you don’t have to wait until then. It’s a prayer you can say any time.

Thank you God for dads. They are very important and we are grateful for all they do. Also, thank

you for all the people that look after us and care for us. We also want to thank you, God, because

all of us have you as a wonderful heavenly Father. In Jesus’ name, Amen

The above story was adapted from a Father’s Day sermon for children found on the website, Sundaychildrensfocus.com,

NJ Synod Assembly May 6-7, Long Branch, NJ

Dear sisters and brothers, the Bible and indeed our own lives are filled with situations and examples when God has provided us with incontestable proof of his ability to silence howling sounds of fear and anxiety. Therefore, our faith in the Lord should always transcend any of our worries and fears. In our fragile and life threatening situations today, the only way to survive and have a meaningful life as a Christian is: First and foremost, turn to the lord; and secondly, turn to one another.

—from Bishop Ernst’s sermon

Bishop Ernst //Gamxamub, ELCA in the Republic of Namibia preaching at morning worship.

Holy Trinity’s Representatives at the 2016 NJ Synod Assembly: Michele Hickey and Sharon Ramsaier

The theme for this year’s Synod assembly was Be Not Afraid!, a theme that drew its inspiration and title from the Taizé chant we sang through the Easter season as our post-Communion song. At this year’s assembly, the 2017 Annual Spending Plan was introduced and voted on, new members of Synod Council were elected, reports and greetings from Ministry Partners like LSMNJ, Crossroads, and Seafarers as well as from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia were presented. At noon there were “lunch and learn” opportunities that covered a wide variety of topics from talking with youth leaders and young people, multicultural ministry initiatives, hunger task groups, mission outreach ideas and social networking workshops.

In the afternoon, the assembly participated in a special order: “Dismantling Racism.” We watched a video of Jay Smooth’s TED talk at Hampshire College entitled, “How I Learned to Stop Worrying About Talking About Race.”* After viewing the film, the assembly broke out to assigned rooms for guided small group discussions sponsored by the Anti-Racism Team of the NJ Synod (Pastor Susan is a member of this team and served as a facilitator of the small group discussions). In addition to the spending plan and Synod Council elections, four resolutions were adopted by the Assembly: 1. To support the unification of the Pennsylvania Seminaries (LTSP and LTSG); 2. A resolution concerning mental health awareness in our congregations; 3. a resolution to memorialize at the Churchwide Assembly of the ELCA to create a “Declaration of the ELCA to the African Descent Community” and 4. to work in partnership with the African Descent Lutheran Association to increase by 10% the number of African Descent leaders serving in congregations and communities nationwide. The Assembly concluded with the installation of the 2016-2017 Synod Council and Blessing and Sending Rites.

From the Porch . . .

TO THOSE IN NEED Because of the overwhelming response we’ve had for the Hope Chest Program coordinated by Community Access in Elizabeth, NJ, we have decided to accept donations only until Sunday, June 5. We are, however, still in need of new small kitchen items (can openers, vegetable peelers, spatulas, etc.), new towels, new twin bedding, and laundry baskets. For now, we have enough appliances, dishes, cutlery and pots.

In the summer months of July and August, we will again be asking for donations of school supplies for New Jersey’s children in need — more information will follow in the next issue.

As always, we thank you for your generosity and continued help with all of our projects. In so many ways, we are making a difference as we reach out together “From the Porch to Those in Need.”

George Moser’s letter of intent to

retire was received and accepted by the Council. His last day will be

June 26. Pastor Susan and members of the Worship and Music committee will

be conducting interviews with qualified applicants.

Four students are to be confirmed on May 22: Emily Cupo, Katie Jones, Bradley Mika, and Christina Vazquez.

Average attendance in March was 72. Weekly Lenten service attendance was down from last year, but attendance was higher this year for Ash Wednesday. April attendance was good, even with Easter Sunday falling in March.

Replacement of the air conditioning system is proceeding as planned.

The next Council meeting will take place on Tuesday, June 14, at 7:15 PM.

To all who provided desserts for the Homeless Dinner on May 11. Approximately 91 people were served. Desserts were plentiful and enjoyed by all. To John Heflich and Al Vereeken for stepping in to do the weekly cleaning in the interim weeks between Vinny Krieger's retirement and finding a cleaning service. John and Al also installed a small brick apron in the backyard for the storage of the outdoor garbage cans and refreshed the paint on outdoor railings and doors and the radiator in the upstairs restroom. To Joe Colaneri for serving as our guest organist in George Moser’s absence. To Michael Fiore for enhancing our worship experience with his trumpet playing.

Thank you to our volunteers who cooked and served a delicious meal for the guests of the Family Promise Walk-In Dinner on Wednesday, May 11.
