They discovered thatin addition to sendingtremors that knock downbuildings, earthquakesgreatly increase thepermeability of rocks totransmit fluids includingoil.

“Shaking increasespermeability,” EmilyBrodsky, an assistantprofessor of EarthSciences at the University

of California, Santa Cruz, said in an interview.

“Permeability governshow fluid flows throughrock, whether it’s water oroil, so this has practicalimplications for oilextraction,” she added.

Brodsky and hercolleagues, who reportedtheir research in thejournal Nature, also foundthat the amount of

permeability is directlyrelated to the amplitude ofthe shaking.

“Potentially if youcould increase per-meability you couldgreatly increase theavailable oil you could tapout of a reserve,” sheexplained.

One way of doing that,in principle, is bymimicking the effects of

an earthquake butscientists do notunderstand the physicswell enough, or how totune the vibrations, toincrease the flow of oil.

One possibility wouldbe to use vibroseis trucksthat shake the ground totake a type of X-ray of theEarth to find out thestructure of rocks andwhere the oil is located.

“If we understoodthe physics of thepermeability enhance-ment well enough, thevibrations could be tunedto increase with the flowof oil,” Brodsky added.

The scientists madetheir discovery afterstudying 20 years of dataof water seeping in andout of wells during sevenearthquakes in an area ofCalifornia.

Cancer causing protein may heal Alzheimers HOUSTON, 1 July —

Researchers have foundthat a protein known fordriving the growth ofcancer also plays asurprising role in restoring

the ability of neurons toregenerate, making it animportant target foraddressing spinal corddamage or neurologicaldiseases like Alzheimers.

“The finding suggeststhat the same process thisprotein uses forproliferating cancer couldalso potentially be used toregrow axons that aredamaged in spinal cordinjuries or neurologicaldiseases,” said lead studyauthor Antonio Iavarone, associate professor ofneurology and pathologyat Columbia UniversityMedical Centre’s Institutefor Cancer Genetics.

The proteins known asId proteins are abundantin the cells of differenttypes of cancer, includingbrain, breast cancer andpediatric tumours andwere known to promotetumour growth and aid thespread of cancer.

While searching forways to attack Id’s cancer-causing properties,Iavarone and Anna

Lasorella, assistantprofessor of pediatricsand pathology at theInstitute, discovered theneuron-healing propertiesof Id proteins.

Their initial findings, published in The Nature, are significant forpotential cancer the-rapies. The researchersfound that an enzymeinside normal cells —called APC usuallydegrades Id proteins soonafter they are produced, but cancerous cells showa very high level of Idproteins.

This suggests that re-introducing the APCenzyme into cancer cellscould eliminate theproteins and arrest thegrowth of tumor cells, something that re-searchers will nowinvestigate.

Among neurons, however, Iavarone andLasorella examined the Idprotein potential forpromoting growth, ratherthan arresting it.

The researchers

wanted to use the powerof Id proteins to stimulategrowth of axons — thestructures on neuronsresponsible for trans-mitting electrical sign alsoin the brain and spinalcord.

But to do that, theyneeded to overcome theproblem of the APCenzyme, which degradesthe protein in normal cells. So they constructed a“super” Id protein thatwould resist degradationfrom the APC enzyme, allowing it to promoteaxonal growth.

Normally neuronscannot regeneratedamaged axons becauseof the presence of myelin,a substance that surroundsthe axons, but thedegradation-resistant‘super’ Id protein was ableto promote axon growtheven in the presence ofmyelin.

Iavarone added thatthere is no chance that sucha therapy would causecancer in the brain orspinal cord. — MNA/PTI

Myanmar women preservingfine traditions

Aye Thandar Thein

Women make up more than 50 per cent of thepopulation of Myanmar. Form time immemorial,Myanmar women have stood on their dignity withaptitude. Being strongly equipped with nationalisticfervour and patriotic spirit, they have demonstratedbrilliant performances in the interests of the nationand the people.

The Myanmar women who played an equalrole with men in the anti-colonialist struggles andnational liberation movements, the women who madesupreme sacrifices in the interests of the motherland, and the women who showed their literary talentswent down in the history of the nation.

By nature, Myanmar women are polite, gentle, considerate and kind and they value loving-kindnessand truthfulness. Brought up under the religiousteachings, they, since their childhood days, followcodes of conduct and instructions of elder persons. Inaddition, they observe codes of conduct while caringfor their husbands and children. They share householdduties with their husbands.

Myanmar women apply knowledge, educationand skills they have learnt, to contribute towards theeducation, health, economic, social, administrative, literary and cultural sectors of the nation, sharingduties with men.

In some nations, due to racial discrimination, women cannot enjoy equal rights in marriage, divorce, inheritance and pursuit of education. In Myanmar, women do not need to ask for equal rights since theyalready enjoy human rights fully. Form birth to death,Myanmar women can lead an independent life withtheir abilities. They preserve their lineage. Myanmarsocial traditions and laws equally bestow humanrights on women and men. In the Myanmar society, women also enjoy social rights such as mutualunderstanding and respect and playing contemporaryrole between women and men.

The government encourages Myanmar womenwho have acquired a good reputation for theiroutstanding performances and dignity and raises theirrole.

The Myanmar National Committee forWomen’s Affairs was formed on 3 July 1996 in theinterests of the mass of Myanmar women. As agesture of honouring the attributes of outstandingMyanmar women and serving the interests of theentire Myanmar womenfolk, the 3rd of July wasdesignated as the Myanmar Women’s Day in 1998and since then the day has been celebrated yearly.

Today, the world has seen rapid developmentin technology. So, the Myanmar National Committeefor Women’s Affairs was reconstituted as theMyanmar Women’s Affairs Federation on 20December 2003 so as to effectively speed upimplementation of the tasks for promotion of the role

of women and to secure the lives of women. The MWAF has laid down seven objectives—

- to enhance the role of women in the building ofa peaceful, modern and developed nation

- to protect the rights of women- to ensure the economic, health, education and

general welfare of women and to providemeasures for their security

- to instill and foster in Myanmar women agreater appreciation for their national, culturalheritage and customs

- to systematically protect women from violenceand provide means for rehabilitation wherenecessary

- to diminish and finally eliminate trafficking inwomen and children as a national task

- to collaborate with international as well aslocal organizations, to ensure the rights ofwomen in accordance with the traditions andcustoms of the ethnic groups,

The MWAF (Central) formed women’s affairsorganizations at state/division, ward and village levelsto improve the lives of women.

In collaboration with congenial departmentsin its drive for the improvement of the lives of thewomen and prevention of violence against women, the MWAF is stepping up holding of educative talksand consoling the women who are facing socialproblems. It also yearly organizes costumes shows sothat young Myanmar women would value and preferto wear domestic modest costumes.

In addition, it is contributing towards publicwelfare tasks such as conducting various courses, providing cash assistance for needy children foreducational purpose, providing teaching and learningaids to schools for the blind and schools for the deafand dumb, providing medicines for the patients, collectively donating blood, carrying out sanitationtasks, and participation in the environmentalconservation campaigns.

Like members of the Myanmar Women’sAffairs Federation, the member intellectuals andintelligentsia of the Myanmar Maternal and ChildWelfare Association, the Myanmar Women’s SportsFederation, the Myanmar Women EntrepreneursAssociation, the Union Solidarity and DevelopmentAssociation and the Myanmar Red Cross Societyplay an active part in the national development tasks.

The mass of Myanmar women are thereforeurged to be united as a strong national force with finetraditions and high calibre and to be harmonious withthe government, the people and the Tatmadaw in thedrive for speedy transition to a peaceful, modern anddeveloped nation.

force with fine traditions and high calibre and to be harmonious with the

Proud Woman

* Mata Pita, Mother and Father

’Tis said since ancient times

But in those words, a clue is found

Distinct and memorable

Father is preceded by Mother.

* Woman who assumes role of Mother

Has possessed high pride

“Not just guiling words

Are the weaker gender...

Don’t look for prettier one and leave

And the weaker gender...”

There’s no need to entreat thus

These days, in the new century

Woman though tender

With new strength on Myanmar land

Not a step behind, will show capability

These Myanmar women.

Be you Myanmar, you love

Your land, eternally cherishing it.

There’s no gender discrimination

Each with her own strength and capability

That she may possess

To work in the interest of Myanmar

Women’s Federation was formed

Myanmar woman, Myanmar blood

To be respected and proud of

* O... Myanmar woman, Myanmar blood

Maintain your cultured movements

Love your kin and lineage

Look not for your interest but your land’s

See the difference between host and guest

Where’s your future interest, where’s

what spoils it.

Get the enemy that’ll destroy your race

And annihilate them

Then only winsome Myanmar’s women

Who possess Myanmar traits

Will truly be worthy of

Being Myanmar’s beloved daughters.

“We have checked thisinformation just in case andmade sure that this is acanard,” he said.

Researchers at Russia'sSiberian Institute of PlantPhysiology and Bio-chemistry used the soilbacterium Agro-bacteriumtumefaciens to shuttle asynthetic combination ofHIV and HBV DNAfragments into tomatoplants. These includefragments of genes forvarious HIV proteins andthe gene for an HBVprotein called HBV surfaceantigen, according to areport on the New Scientistwebsite on Thursday.

The tomato plants thenmanufacture the proteinsand, like the oral poliovaccine, when the

tomatoes are eaten, theseproteins prompt the bodyto create antibodiesagainst the viruses. Micefed a solution containingthe tomatoes in powderedform developed highlevels of antibodies in theirblood to both viruses, theresearchers said.

The vaccine does notneed to be refrigerated orinjected, which are bigadvantages in poorcountries, the report said, quoting researcher RoseHammond of the USAgricultural Department

which is collaboratingwith the Russianresearchers. The aim is tocreate affordable vaccinesfor HIV and the HBV thatcould be easily grown andprocessed in the countrieswhere they are mostneeded. If the tomato-based vaccines work inhumans, they could begiven in tablet form, sincegiving people thetomatoes directly wouldmake it difficult to controlhow much protein theyreceived, the researcherssaid.—MNA/Xinhua

SAO PAULO (Brazil), 2July— Tears flowed asdisappointment grippedBrazil on Saturday afterits star-studded WorldCup soccer team suffereda stinging 1-0 defeat toFrance, ending its hopes

of a sixth championship. "This was the worst

thing that could have hap-pened — to lose to Franceagain," said Fabio Santos,39, a fan in Sao Paulo.

Brazil, which won theprevious World Cup

championship in 2002,and is the only country tohave won five World Cuptitles, considers itself aglobal soccer super-power.

But it lost to France inthe 1998 World Cup finaland many Brazilians hadprayed their team wouldnot be jinxed again onSaturday.

Brazil's team struggledto find its rhythm and atough French defense qui-eted Brazilian strikers.

"We're stranded herecrying, feeling enormousfrustration," said RicardoSantos, one of the organ-izers of the cheering sec-tion on a Rio de Janeirostreet where some 10,000people watched the game.

FRANKFURT, 2 July— A France teamreminiscent of a previous vintageknocked out holders Brazil 1-0 with aThierry Henry goal on Saturday to reachthe World Cup semifinals.

Striker Henry, left unmarked in the

area, volleyed home a free kick fromZinedine Zidane for the winner after 57minutes.

Les Bleus, who had stunned Brazil3-0 in the 1998 final, produced a superbperformance to set up a match withPortugal on Wednesday in Munich for aplace in the July 9 final.

Five-times champions Brazil, whowere hoping to reach the World Cup finalfor the fourth time in succession, lookednervous throughout a game of highquality. France's win means the greatZidane, who was back to his brilliantbest in Frankfurt, has not played his lastmatch yet.

The 34-year-old maestro, who willretire after the finals, lived up to theoccasion, as did the entire French team.

The finest bunch of players to wearFrench colours when they were worldchampions began the finals sluggishlybut proved at Brazil's expense that theyare still a formidable outfit.

Brazil showed more initiative in atight, tactical start dominated by an in-tense battle for possession and threat-ened after 11 minutes as Ronaldo headeda Ronaldinho free kick over.

France, gradually winning more ballsin midfield and gaining confidence, domi-nated their prestigious opponents for mostof a frustrating first period with fewhighlights.— MNA/Reuters
