Led by Virginia Kraft Payson's $700,000 purchase

of Summer Solo from the Sarah J. Leigh Estate

(Denali Stud, agent), Keeneland's January mixed sale

opener on Monday sold 182 horses for $13,631,200,

up 8.1% from 2015's total for 204 horses.

The $74,897 average was up 21.2% from last

year's $61,800, and the $39,500 median gained

12.9% on last year's figure of $35,000. Buy-backs

improved, but only marginally, falling from 2015's

rate of 33.1% to 32.8% for the first of this week's five

sessions.

Payson bought three of the day's top four lots,

including the session-topper, in foal to Ghostzapper,

and her $550,000 juvenile half sister Summer Sweet.

"The figures were very solid today," said Keene-

land director of sales Geoffrey Russell, who not-

ed the session sold five horses for more than the

$400,000 top price of last year's January opener.

"Overall, it gets to be an old adage, but quality sells.

If you bring the right product to market, you are fully

rewarded." BH

Solo (in foal to Ghostzapper) and her 2-year-old

More Than Ready half sister Summer Sweet at

$550,000—both bought by Virginia Kraft Payson

in the name of her Payson Stud—the six Leigh

offerings brought $2,095,000 for an average of

$349,167. The session's co-third-highest price was

a $450,000 Arch filly out of Seeking Atlantis, who

was also out of the Leigh dispersal and bought by

Payson.

Sarah Jane Leigh was the daughter of promi-

nent British breeder Gerald Leigh, whose family's

Eydon Hall Farm was responsible for such top-

class runners as 1994 Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT)

winner and European Horse of the Year Barathea.

Frank Stronach, founder and honorary chairman

of The Stronach Group, is among the speakers

assembled for the National Owners Conference Jan.

12-13 at Gulfstream Park in Florida.

The conference is being run by OwnerView, a

joint venture between the Thoroughbred Owners

and Breeders Association and The Jockey Club. The

inaugural conference was held in the fall of 2014 at

Keeneland. This year's conference was scheduled as

a lead-up to the Jan. 16 Eclipse Awards ceremony,

also at Gulfstream.

Stronach, a perennial leading North American

breeder through his Adena Springs operation, is

scheduled to give a 20-minute "welcome message"

Jan. 12. His company owns Gulfstream along with

five other racetracks.

Jim Rome, talk-show host and Thoroughbred owner

of Jungle Racing, will deliver the keynote address Jan. 13.

The conference is designed to offer insights into

horse ownership for new and current Thoroughbred

owners. Topics include various ways to acquire race-

horses, their daily care, and those who provide it; the

importance of planning for aftercare; development

of a business plan for horse owners; and success

stories in the business. BH

Sanan, a grade II winner for Hall of

Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, and

the sire of 68 stakes winners, was

euthanized Jan. 11 at Three Chim-

neys Farm near Midway, Ky.

The 19-year-old son of the

legendary Danzig who had been

treated for pneumonia and liver

dysfunction more recently devel-

oped deep vein thrombosis in his

right hind leg.

In 2015 Exchange Rate had 11 new stakes win-

ners, of which five won graded/group stakes. His four

North American grade I winners are Ermine, who

won the Apple Blossom Handicap; Ball Dancing, win-

ner of the Jenny Wiley Stakes on turf; Sunset Glow,

who won the Del Mar Debutante Stakes; and, Swap

Fliparoo, who took the Darley Test Stakes.

Exchange Rate stood five seasons in Florida and

nine in Kentucky, and was shuttled three seasons to

Argentina. His 390 yearlings sold in North America

averaged $63,568. He covered 127 mares in 2015

had been fully booked for 2016 (at a $20,000 fee),

according to Grant Williamson, Three Chimneys'

director of stallion nominations. BH

Shuttling sires from Australia to Europe, it seems,

has never been so popular as 12 Australian sires

have arrived for the 2016 breeding season.

With Europe’s sales market dominated by

precociously bred offspring that can fill the

busy juvenile program, the demand is strong

for progeny by sires who possess good speed

over a mile or less.

Darley brings eight stallions to Europe,

including four new sires: Brazen Beau, Hal-

lowed Crown, Sidestep and Shooting to Win.

Australian sires have proved a good

source of success in recent years. Fastnet

Rock was leading sire for 2014-15 season

and 2011-12 season, sired three European

group I winners in 2015, including Epsom

Oaks (Eng-I) winner Qualify; Exceed And

Excel is the sire of more than 40 Northern

Hemisphere stakes winners; while Starspan-

gledbanner sired the 2014 Prix Morny (Fr-I)

winner The Wow Signal.

With Sepoy, So You Think, Redoute's Choice—who

does not return for the 2016 season—Foxwedge, and

Helmet all due their first European-conceived run-

ners this year, Australian sires will have an influence

in Europe for some time. BH

MAPPING OUT A WINNING CAMPAIGN

Proponents of proper plan-

ning like to quote legendary

baseball executive Branch

Rickey’s “luck is the residue

of design,” as if good plan-

ning alone was enough to

temper the whims of fortune

and achieve success. This, of

course, is pure bunkum.

While it may be tempting

to attribute good luck as a

direct result of your brilliant

planning, this not only smacks

of self-delusion, but also has

the distinct odor of hubris. The thought here is

that there are good plans and bad plans, just

as there are good luck and bad luck operating

independently on all designs.

Consider the case of California Chrome. The

official story states that his entire 3-year-old

campaign was plotted out well in advance, and

it resulted in four grade I wins and his being

named 2014 Horse of the Year. Presumably his

2015 campaign also involved at least a modicum

of planning, yet that scheme resulted in only two

second-place finishes and months of quixotic and

ultimately fruitless vagabonding in search of turf

glory at Ascot and Arlington International. Not all

plans are created equal.

Given recent retirements in the handicap di-

vision and the devastating loss of Shared Belief,

it was great to see the popular “Chrome” return

to form in the Jan. 9 San Pasqual (gr. II) at Santa

Anita. Although this observer strives to avoid be-

ing one of “those handicappers” who thinks he

knows how to spot a horse better than its train-

er (or, in some cases, its owner), we will confess

to some satisfaction that grass racing no longer

seems to be a part of Chrome’s future. Here’s

to letting Chrome be Chrome and allowing the

chips to fall where they may.

This handicapper’s plan for his own winning

campaign has typically found him concentrat-

ing on familiar players and surroundings, such

as the New York circuit and other locales with

graded stakes races and high-class turf racing,

especially places such as Keeneland and Ken-

tucky Downs, which feature the lowest takeouts

in the country.

A hankering for beating favorites does result

in some long dry patches. In the past the ten-

dency has been to avoid multi-race wagers on

the theory that playing mainly “price” horses

makes it hard enough to win one race, let alone

four or five in a row. But with the advent of

50-cent Pick 5 betting with very low takeouts,

the bar to betting into large pools with poten-

tially massive payouts has never been lower (an

important consideration for low-rollers like me).

It’s a new year, and time to see if old dogs really

can learn new tricks. Anyhow, that’s the plan,

and at least for now I'm sticking with it. BH

The resurgence of the Maryland Breeding Industry encouraged Country Life Farm to acquire three broodmares (pictured above) at the 2015 Keeneland November Sale, each in the $50,000-range. We formed the Raise You #1, 2, and 3 LLCs, ten shares at $5,000, with Country Life a 10% partner, and

expenses of $125 a month. The LLCs quickly sold out. The LLCs have a two-year term, with the mares selling in foal in 2017, after (we hope) delivering two Md-bred foals, also to be sold, with the LLCs eligible for future MD Fund Breeders’ Awards. Contact us if interested in the “Raise You #4.”
