When hip 69 , a Medaglia d=Oro filly, recorded a smooth drill in :10.1 last week, it keyed her in as the horse to watch at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Train- ing. Yesterday, she became the highest-priced filly in the sale=s history when Stonestreet Stables rep John Moynihan went to $650,000 to land the Mar. 19-foaled bay. Rain forced many of the onlook- ers to seek shelter indoors, so announcer Terence Collier played to a full house when the desirable filly stepped into the ring. After asking for $500,000 to start, the action got going when Buzz Chace, bidding on behalf of Lewis Lakin and West Point Thoroughbreds, offered $300,000. AThat=s the oldest trick in the book,@ Collier quipped, Ato start things off with a big bid.@ But the salvo deterred all but one other party. Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning, Jr., standing across from the auctioneers= stand while on the phone with Moynihan, answered. Chace and Browning continued to go back and forth, with Browning taking his time for each responding bid before finally getting the girl for $650,000. The Buzz Horse... Bloodstock agent Buzz Chace admitted he stretched ita bit in an attempt to land hip 69 for Lewis Lakin andWest Point. AI opened it and was the underbidder,@ heconfirmed. AI thought she=d bring between $300-500,000. She was a good physical and moved well, and she=s by a sire that gets pretty good fillies. But youcan=t get them all.@ That statement might not actuallyapply to Stonestreet, at least at this year=s two-year-oldin training sales. Yesterday=s transaction marked thethird time this spring that Jess Jackson=s operationwalked away with a sale topper. In early March,Moynihan went to $2.3 million to land a DistortedHumor--Tomisue's Delight colt; a month later, atKeeneland April, he paid $625,000 for a Bernardini--Moonlight Sonata colt.

Time for Some Chit Chat... Chit Chat Pam captured a pair of added-moneyevents for Ken Murphy at Sam Houston in 2006, butwas retired after finishing fourth in a Lone Star allow-

ance in April that year. TheTexas-bred changed hands notmuch later. AWe bought her offthe racetrack for a partnership,@said Pete Bradley. The marewound up RNA=ing for $75,000at KEEJAN in 2007. AWe tried tosell her, but just didn=t get itdone,@ Bradley added. Hip 69was bred in the name of BradleyThoroughbred Brokerage, Chero-kee Equine and Pomerol Pty.AShe was supposed to sell atFasig in July, but we wound upgetting an [undisclosed] offer forher,@ Bradley continued. AMichel

Zerolo, who used to buy for Mr. Gann, was looking toget a filly for the man who used to race Medagliad=Oro.@ The dark bay was sent to Eisaman Equine tolearn her first lessons, but, after Gann passed away inFebruary, the decision was made to offer her at auc-tion. She made her case to buyers during the firstunder-tack show, sharing the fastest time on the day.Chit Chat Pam has a yearling filly by Latent Heat(Maria=s Mon). She did not produce a foal this year, butBradley still has an interest in the mare. AI=m not surewho she=ll go to next year,@ he said. AWe=ll see how thisfilly does on the track, but there=s a good chance she=llbe bred back to Medaglia d=Oro.@

Knocking on Tapit’s Door... A year ago, agent Steve Young paid a sale-record$850,000 for a Tapit colt from the Hobeau Farm dis-

persal. That youngster, now do-ing business as Trappe Shot forMill House and trainer KiaranMcLaughlin, was tabbed as a J “TDN Rising Star” J inFebruary. Young didn=t have to goas high yesterday for hip 282, ason of Tapit--Prall Street (Chero-kee Run), but still had to fork over$450,000 for the grey colt fromthe Eddie Woods draft. AThatplayed some role, but he standson his own merit,@ Young saidabout Trappe Shot=s promise. AIdefinitely think he=s a two-turnhorse; his dam was very quick.@

Though Young said his client asked not to be disclosed,he indicated that the new acquisition would joinMcLaughlin=s string. Though several bids came from the main pavilion, itgot serious between Donato Lanni, who was behind theauctioneers= stand, and Young, who looked ready tomake a quick exit by the side door. When asked howhigh he would have gone for the colt, Young smiled andsaid, AWe weren=t done yet. I think this is a very strongsale and, as the day went on, I figured this was aboutwhat he would bring.@ Eddie Woods prepared the top-priced colt for hisbreeders, Bill Graves and Dennis Lynch, and this pre-sented a solid score for those gentlemen. The colt=sdam, Prall Street, was acquired by them as a yearlingfor $29,000 as a yearling at FTKOCT in 2002. Shefailed to make her reserve at OBSMAR at $27,000 andwas put into training with McLaughlin. After airing by 5 3/4 lengths in her debut at Aqueduct, the bay landeda Big A allowance in her third appearance, but was thenout of action for 14 months. She made four more startswithout winning for trainer Dale Romans, and wasretired at the end of her four-year-old season. ABilly and I raced that mare,@ Lynch said soon afterselling the colt. AShe had a lot of talent. We almost hadher sold to Mark Reid, but she had a setback--a chip.@ Prall Street=s first foal, a Value Plus filly, sold for$12,000 as a yearling at KEESEP in 2008, and thedecision was made to send her to Gainesway stallionTapit. AI wish I could tell you it was some Tesio theory, butit=s not,@ said Lynch. ABill had a share in Tapit, and weused two seasons to him.@ Prall Street also has a Tapityearling. AShe was bred back to Afleet Alex last week, but I=m not sure yet if she=s in foal or not,@ Lynchadded. A[This colt] was a bit immature as a yearling, sowe didn=t try to sell him, and we sent him to EddieWoods.@ Hip 282 breezed a quarter in :22.1.

No Reservations on the Numbers... Fasig-Tipton officials were understandably pleased byMonday=s buoyant trade. Despite a trimmed-downcatalogue, the gross of $13,099,500 easily surpassed

the $10,651,000 from2009, while the $47,984average was 14 percenthigher than the $42,099achieved over the course oftwo days 12 months ago.The median rose to $27,000from $25,000. The RNApercentage was an almostunheard-of 12.5 percent.AIt=s a phenomenal rate forany sale, let alone a two-year-old-in-training sale,@said Fasig-Tipton PresidentBoyd Browning. AGenerally, you=d be happy with 25 per-

cent at a two-year-old sale. It was indicative of thedepth of buyers at all levels, not just the top. Therewere people here with just $10,000, $20,000 and$50,000 to spend. We=ve seen some momentum build-ing at the two-year-old sales this year and, like in thegeneral economy, confidence has been restored to anextent.@ He added, AThis location feeds more racingjurisdictions than any other place that has a sale. Yousee good things happening in Pennsylvania, and pursesare still decent in Delaware. Some of the Marylandpeople we=ve talked to think we=re going to see someimprovement in Maryland. So it=s a combination offactors. Buyers and consignors have become morerealistic. I think that consignors see that you can bringa legitimate quality horse to this sale, and I think you=llsee a lot more of that in 2001. The depth of buyerswas pretty impressive.@

American Beauty... Hip 185, a Quiet American filly out of IcelandicDancer (Eskimo), served notice with her easy three-furlong breeze in :34.3 last week, and confirmed herpromise by selling for $380,000 to Hillwood Stable

LLC, the nom de course of EllenMacNeille Charles. The biddingwas spirited between Charles,Debbie Easter and Donato Lanni, all of whom were seated on theright side of the pavilion. Lannidropped out at $360,000 andEaster gave the next offer, butCharles, sitting with her trainerRodney Jenkins, had the win-ning number. AShe=s just such abeautiful-moving filly, and wasglorious just standing there,@said Charles. AThere=s really agrace to her.@ Charles resides inthe nation=s capitol, and con-firmed that her new acquisition

would remain in Maryland with Jenkins. AWashingtonD.C. is not really a good place to keep a horse,@ shejoked. Charles is a granddaughter of Hillwood Museumfounder Marjorie Merriweather Post, and her motherwas Adelaide Close Riggs, a philanthropist and notedsupporter of Maryland racing. Having gotten into theracing business herself about a decade ago, Charles hasabout 20 horses in training with Jenkins, including GSPMalibu Kid (Malibu Moon). Hillwood acquired a pair ofsix-figure youngsters at this venue last year, a$160,000 son of Stephen Got Even and a $150,000colt by Songandaprayer. Hip 185 sold for $30,000 as a yearling at FTKJUL,where she was consigned by Legacy Bloodstock. AlPike=s Pike Racing offered the filly here on behalf of apartnership consisting of Leg-acy=s Mark Toothaker and J.R.and Rita Young. AWhen I puther on the trailer, I thoughtshe=d bring $150,000 or so,because she was a good, quality filly,@ said Pike, whoconfirmed that this was hisbiggest success at a two-year-old sale. ABut then she workedso well, and everyone seemedto like her. We did put a$74,000 reserve on her, but, Ihave to say, this was a lot offun. Mark Toothaker is an oldfriend of mine, and it=s greatto have this kind of success.@The attractive bay filly is a half-sister to stakes winnersSizzlin South (A Corking Limerick) and Sparklin Lil (Mr.Sparkles).

Miller Time... EQB Inc.=s Patti Miller was busy signing ticketsthroughout yesterday=s session, winding up with SIXnew acquisitions. Three years ago, Miller acquired even-tual champion Informed Decision (Monarchos) for

$320,000 at this venue for GeorgeStrawbridge=s Augustin Stable.Miller bought three six-figurehorses at Timonium, topped by hip87, a $200,000 son of IndianCharlie; and hip 27, a $180,000Stormy Atlantic filly. AThey=re fordifferent clients, said Miller, whiledeclining to disclose the names. She offered Jonathan Sheppardand Tom Amoss as possible train-ers for the new recruits. AI do thinkI got the best filly and best colt[Indian Charlie] in the sale,@ shesaid. AThis is one of the last salesof the season, so vetting can bean issue. We did get the ones wewanted. If it=s a good individual

that breezes well and jumps through all of the hoops--you do have to pay a premium for that.@ Miller added,AThere=s certainly opportunity here. It=s not always theperfect horse that ends up in the winner=s circle. Thereare a lot of good horses here selling for $20-30,000that are going to win a lot of races.@ Throughout therainy day, the buyback rate appeared very low, espe-cially for a two-year-old sale. AThat=s understandable,@Miller offered. AThis is the end of the line, and a lot ofpeople are having trouble getting financing.@

Korean Quantity... Korean buyers, who accounted for 92 purchases atthe four-day OBS April Sale, according ocala.com, werevery active at yesterday=s session. Three-quarters of theway through the action at Timonium, no fewer than 30head had been picked up by Koreaninterests. Most of the purchaseswere at the $20,000 level, with atop price of $45,000 for hip 110, aSaarland--Dusty=s Legacy filly fromthe On the Run (Moses Longoria)consignment. Their presence herewas no accident. AOver the last fewyears, they have been very active inother regions, but we were able toget the stars in line,@ explainedFasig-Tipton=s Terence Collier.ATimewise, this sale suited them. Itwas part of a promotion with theKRA [Korean Racing Association],and we entertained them in Ken-tucky. They have special and unique requirements.@ Thechief of those requirements is the price constraint setby the Korean government. AThey just had to hope themarket wouldn=t go by them.@

Will New York racing shut down after Belmont?Jerry Bossert, New York Daily News

NYRA chief offers warning

More NYRA woes.Tim Wilkin, Albany Times-Union

No Triple Crown, no interest in Belmont

This turned out to be a rather uninspiring Triple Crownseries.John Clay, Lexington Herald-Leader

Royal Option for Duty... Khalid Abdullah=s Special Duty (GB) (Hennessy) couldtake in the G1 Coronation S. at Royal Ascot, trainerCriquette Head-Maarek revealed yesterday. Connectionswill monitor the condition of the homebred ahead of theJune 18 contest, having taken in the G1 1000 Guineasand G1 Poule d=Essai des Pouliches in the space of afortnight. ASpecial Duty is fine this morning and shelooks well,@ the trainer told Racing Post. AShe did lose alittle weight, but ate up well since returning to herstable. The filly is very strong mentally, but she didn=treally enjoy coming down the Longchamp descentbefore the straight. There are no plans for the moment, and we must see how she comes out of the Poulichesbefore deciding her future. The Coronation S. at Ascotcould become a future target. It will be Prince Khalidwho will make the final decision.@

Music Show Readied... Jaber Abdullah=s Music Show (Ire) (Noverre) is beingprepared for a tilt at Sunday=s G1 Irish 1000 Guineas atThe Curragh. Trainer Mick Channon will work the G2Rockfel S. and G3 Nell Gwyn S. winner, who was firsthome on the far side in the May 2 G1 1000 Guineas atNewmarket but out of the money overall, over theSummer Ground Gallop at West Ilsley this morning andsaid, AMusic Show hasn=t done too much, she came outof the Guineas in good heart and has certainly improvedsince Newmarket. She=s only galloped once and tomor-row=s pipe opener is all she needs. We feel she stands agreat chance, although we are at the mercy of theweather, as I wouldn=t want the ground to be too softfor her.@

Coronation for Lady of the Desert... J “TDN Rising Star” J Lady of the Desert (Rahy)was reported to have lost a shoe during Sunday=s G1Poule d=Essai des Pouliches at Longchamp. Denied a runin the final yards and promoted from sixth to fifth fol-lowing the disqualification of the winner Liliside (Fr)(American Post {GB}), Jaber Abdullah=s homebred wasbeaten just over a length there. The owner=s RacingManager Bruce Raymond told PA Sport, AIt was amessy race all round, but it looked as though she gotthe trip all right. She was still a bit keen early, but therewasn=t much pace until after two furlongs. She seemsto have come out of the race and looks bright enough. She lost her near-fore shoe, which obviously didn=t helpher. Where she lost it we don=t know, possibly in thefinal furlong, but the boys didn=t notice it until she gotback to her box. I guess the next start will be the G1Coronation S. [at Royal Ascot June 18].@

TripleThreats

Super Saver to Get Break; DMC to Mother Goose? Todd Pletcher told Daily Racing Form that GI Ken-tucky Derby hero Super Saver (Maria=s Mon) will get abreak following his eighth-place finish in Saturday=s GIPreakness S. at Pimlico. "He won't breeze for a while,"Pletcher told the publication. The conditioner said theWinStar homebred would continue to jog and gallop, however. He added the GII Jim Dandy S. at SaratogaJuly 31 or the GI Haskell Invitational at Monmouth aday later are possible targets. Pletcher added that, while he thought Super Saver has handled his sopho-more campaign reasonably well, that he thought hisrecent exertions had begun to take their toll. ALike mosthorses that will run three races in five weeks, they'regoing to lose a little bit of weight, which is about whatwe expected,@ said Pletcher. AI think he's mentally heldup really well, but as expected he's lost a few pounds.@ Pletcher saddled four horses in the Derby, and out-lined plans for the other three. He said that the fillyDevil May Care (Malibu Moon) would likely bypass theGI Belmont S. in favor of the GI Mother Goose S. atBelmont June 26. Mission Impazible (Unbridled=s Song), ninth in the Run for the Roses, could tackled the GIIIPegasus S. at Monmouth Park June 19, while Dis-creetly Mine (Mineshaft) ,13th in the Derby, willshorten up to contest the GII Woody Stephens S. onthe Belmont Stakes undercard June 5.

NYRA: BELMONT MEET REMAINS IN JEOP-ARDY The New York Racing Association reiteratedyesterday that, without a resolution with state officialsover financial matters, it could run out of cash beforethe end of the current Belmont spring/summer meet.ANYRA's current cash position will not allow us to makeit through the entire Belmont Park race meet,@ NYRA'sPresident and CEO, Charles Hayward, said in a pressrelease. AWe are in discussions with the state regardingpotential avenues for us to acquire funding.@ New YorkCity Off-Track Betting owes NYRA$17 million, but isbankrupt and currently unable to make payments, whilean operator for the VLT machines long-approved atAqueduct has yet to be selected. The state, meanwhile,is facing a crushing $9 billion budget deficit, and law-makers are in a stalemate over a budget that was sup-posed to be approve by Apr. 1.

OAK TREE EXPLORING OPTIONS It is still possible that the Oak Tree Racing Associa-tion will be able to negotiate a new lease with SantaAnita owner MI Developments, but other avenues arebeing contemplated. Officials at Hollywood Park andDel Mar have stated publicly that they would make theirfacilities available for Oak Tree=s meet, set to run Sept.29-Oct. 31, if need be. Oak Tree Executive Vice Presi-dent Sherwood Chillingworth said Monday that a deci-sion on where the meet will take place needs to bemade in a matter of weeks. AWe probably need to do it by the first of July, be-cause obviously we have certain advertising to do, thatyou have to commit to reasonably soon,@ Chillingworthremarked. It may be more than a month before he has achance to sit down with someone from MI Develop-ments, however. AWe tried to have a meeting withthem, and they said they couldn=t meet until June 19,@Chillingworth said. AWe=re trying to be cooperative.@ The bankruptcy reorganization plan submitted byMagna International at the end of April, which gavecontrol of Santa Anita to parent company MID, alsoreaffirmed Oak Tree=s lease for the track. But, asChillingworth explained, AThey had a period of 15 dayswhere they could change their minds--then, I think 14days later, they turned around and rejected the lease.@He added, AThey said they want to work with us, but Idon=t know what that is. I asked them to please giveme some background, some parameters--it didn=t haveto be specific--but they said they wanted to discuss thewhole thing at one time. That=s fine--we will listen tothem. We=re prepared.@ Hollywood President Jack Liebau told Daily RacingForm he would not charge Oak Tree a rent fee to holdthe meet at his track. While Chillingworth admitted theoffer was generous, he is still hopeful that a deal withMID can be reached. AI want to see what they=re goingto offer--the whole package,@ he said. AThey can addsomething here and take something away to balance itout. I don=t know what they=re proposing, and theyhave not outlined any of the major issues that youwould want to know--I=m not sure they have collectedtheir ideas together themselves. But we=re trying to begood guys and we=ll look at what they have to offer.@There are several reasons why Oak Tree officials wouldlike to stay at Santa Anita. AWe=ve been here for 41years,@ Chillingworth said. AAnd it=s obviously the pre-ferred place for the Breeders= Cup. I=ve been talking tothe Breeders= Cup people--I don=t know how big a factorit=s going to be, but I=m sure it will be a factor.@ While the official meeting between Oak Tree and MIDwon=t be held until next month, Chillingworth said therewas a small chance he would get together with MIDChief Executive Officer Dennis Mills this week. ADennisMills will be in California for the California Horse RacingBoard meeting in Berkeley Thursday,@ he offered. AHemay come by and see me--I don=t know. He hasn=t saidhe=s going to, so I=m not expecting him, but he has thatopportunity.@
