In 1925 Alfred Buchi, a Swiss engineer, Patented a design for the turbocharging with power increase of 40%.

First turbo charger were limited to larger engines, such as Marine engines

    later with trucks engine.

Chevrolet corvair and Oldsmobile made the debut.

After oil crisis in 1973, it became more acceptable.

It was introduced in petrol engine even before in diesel but due to not

    being economical, it discontinued.

First diesel turbocharged engine came in Mercedes-benz 300 SD.

A turbine driven forced induction device thatmakes an engine more efficient and

produces more power forits size by forcing extra air

    Into the combustion

    chamber.

The objective of a turbocharger is toimprove an engine's volumetric

    efficiency by increasing density of

the intake gas (usually air) .

    The turbocharger increases the

density of air entering the engineto create more power.

    Principle of using Turbocharger

Exhaust gases when leaving the engine through the exhaust collector are led to

the turbine pit where the rotor is located. The shaft drives the compressor rotor which is located on the other side of the

device (often called the cold side), which compresses air that supplies the

    engine.

    Methods of Turbo charging

There are various ways of turbo charging an

    engine:

    Constant pressure turbo charging

    Pulse turbo charging

    Two stage turbo charger

    Constant pressure turbo charging

Exhaust from cylinders discharge into acommon manifold at a pressure greater thanATM.

Exhaust gases expands in exhaust valve toan approx constant pressure in commonmanifold and pass it further to the turbine.

Blow down energy is converted into Kineticenergy.

Exhaust gases are maintained at constant

    Pulse turbo charging

Considerable part of the blow-down energy isconverted to exhaust pulses as valve opens.

Pulses are led through narrow pipes by the shortest

route to turbine where this energy is utilized.

Towards the end, the pressure in the exhaust pipe

drops below the scavenging and large air pressuremaking the scavenging quite easy.

    Two stage converter

Also called as twin turbo as in Bentley,

includes two turbocharger of different sizes

    and series e.g.

high pressure stage operating on the pulse system

and a low pressure stage on constant pressure

    operation.

    Limitations of the turbocharger

    Requires extra Special Exhaust Manifold

Fuel injection has to be modified to inject

more fuel per unit time. Either larger pumpingelement or larger nozzle is required.

Unlike natural aspirated, turbocharged engines pass

only the most minute particle without damage.

The efficiency of the turbine blade is very sensitive

to gas velocity so that is very difficult to obtain goodefficiency over a wide range of operation.
