Twinsies © Debi Montgomery Clue 4 We have some HSTs to do for this clue and some tri-recs units again (like in clue 1). I have included the easy 8 method for the HSTs for today, these will measure 4-1/2” today for a 4” finish. I have also included some border units for those who may want to add the border. This border is included in the KING size fabric requirements ONLY, therefore if you want to make the border, you may need extra or different but coordinating fabrics for that. Two different blocks, each will have their own cutting chart and instructions. ALL SIZES need these blocks as in clues 1, 2, and 3. Please use your leftovers before cutting new WOF strips. Clue 4

We have some HSTs to do for this clue and some tri-recs units again (like in clue 1).

I found I could cut heaps from scraps from previous clues!

Block A:LIGHT All Sizes

10” WOF strips 1

Sub-cut to 10” squares 3

5-1/4” WOF strips Leftovers and/or 1

Sub-cut to 5-1/4” squares 3

Use remainder to cut 4-7/8” squares 3

Cut squares on ONE diagonal for triangles 6

4-1/2” WOF strips 2

Sub-cut to 4-1/2” squares 18

MEDIUM 2 All Sizes

10” WOF strips 1

Sub-cut to 10” squares 3

5-1/4” WOF strips Leftovers and/or 1

First thing we will do is use our 10” squares to make HSTs using the easy 8 method. We will draw and “x” on the wrong side of the light 10” squares. These will be mated to our MEDIUM 2 and we will stitch 1/4” to the left and right of the lines we drew.

I flipped this so you could see the seams:

We need to cut these large sewn blocks four times, in half on the square, then ONthose lines.

Once we finish cutting, we will press toward the MEDIUM 2 and trim to 4-1/2”. I use the 45° angle line on my ruler to accomplish this.

Set these 24 HST units aside for a little while til we finish this next little step.

Now we will grab the 5-1/4” squares and draw ONE diagonal line on the wrong side of the LIGHT. We will again stitch 1/4” from the line to the right and left of the line. Following this, we will cut on BOTH diagonals for triangles. Pictured from the MEDIUM 2 side so you can see my stitching.

Press these toward the MEDIUM 2 and we are ready for those 4-7/8” triangles in both colours we cut.

It doesn’t matter which is sewn to which as we will be able to rotate them to get our desired layout.

You should have six (6) of these, pressed to the non-pieced triangle and trimmed to 4-1/2”.

Now we are ready to move on to set out this 12-1/2” unit:

I completed it in a 9-patch manner for ease.

Our units will have a bit of bulk at some of the corners, so please be careful to nest those seams and press flat.

This isn’t perfect, but you get the picture!! I have a point in there, where the bulk is that is hard to press flat. You will have six (6) of these 12-1/2” units.

Block B:

*AND fabric folded RST (right sides together)

LIGHT All Sizes

3-1/2” WOF strips 8

Sub-cut to 3-1/2” x 6-1/2” rectangles 16

AND 3-1/2” x 12-1/2” rectangles 16

2-1/2” WOF strips 4

Using the tri tool, cut triangles 32

AND 2-1/2” squares 32

MEDIUM 1 All Sizes

2-1/2” WOF strips 2

Using the recs tool* cut triangles 32 sets (64 triangles)

MEDIUM 2 All Sizes

2-1/2” WOF strips 1

Sub-cut to 2-1/2” squares 8

Now for some fun little stars that we will border to make them 12-1/2” later in the clue!! You will need your tri-recs units first. Your tri tool will be used with your LIGHT and the recs tool for the MEDIUM 1. These will become 2-1/2” “star point” squares.

First pics are a bit of cutting help, then let’s get sewing!Tri tool with the LIGHT:

Recs tool with MEDIUM 1:

Now we need to put these together!

Deconstructed: First side on: Complete:

Now let’s assemble a larger unit! We will be using all the 2-1/2” squares we cut for this block and assembling like a 9-patch.

Deconstructed: Complete 6-1/2” units. You should have 8:

Once these 6-1/2” units are pressed (in the flattest easiest way), we will “border” each one with those 3-1/2” rectangle units we cut for this block. We will start with the 6-1/2” lengths and add those to the sides, followed by the 12-1/2” lengths on the top and bottom:

Deconstructed: And our 12-1/2” units:

We will press these AWAY from the centre star and trim to 12-1/2” (you shouldn’t need to trim at all). We will have 8 of these units now.

Block C (Border block mentioned at the beginning of this clue):*You can choose which to do here, you get to be the designer!

LIGHT BORDER (King)

3-1/4” WOF strips 1

Sub-cut to 3-1/4” squares 2

2-1/2” WOF strips 1

Sub-cut to 2-1/2” squares 16

MEDIUM 1 BORDER (King)

3-1/4” WOF strips 1

Sub-cut to 3-1/4” squares 2

Use remainder to cut 3” squares 4

Cut 3” squares on ONE diagonal 8 triangles

Use remainder to cut 2-1/2” squares 8

*For this I chose to cut 12 of these*

MEDIUM 2 BORDER (King)

Use scraps to cut 2-1/2” squares 4

*I cut NONE of these for mine*

This is a pretty easy block unit to complete and you get to choose the final look. I chose MEDIUM 1 throughout, you can easily replace the MEDIUM 1 with your MEDIUM 2 in the centre block. If you completely reverse it, we will have to reverse the border units in a later clue… just a head’s up.

Grabbing our 3-1/4” LIGHT and MEDIUM 1 squares, draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of your LIGHT. We will stitch 1/4” to the left and right of the line. We will then cut on BOTH diagonals for triangle units. (Just like page 2.)

Press these little ones toward the dark and we are ready.

We will now use those 3” MEDIUM 1 triangles to assemble this:

We cut this a bit large, so please trim this down to 2-1/2” after pressing to the MEDIUM 1 larger triangle.

Now, here is where you have a choice. I made my centre block in this 9-patch unit using my MEDIUM 1 fabric. You can choose to use your MEDIUM 2 here if you wish.

Deconstructed: Complete:

Optional centre laid on top of my finished block. No matter which you choose, this pretty little block should be 6-1/2” now and look like ribbons laying over each other. Press in the easiest way for you.
