TANDY-LEE MARINUS Born in Bellville and bred in Durbanville, Benurita Phillips is a living modern day Mother Theresa. Having grown up in difficult circumstanc- es, Benurita’s upbringing played a major role in the person she is today. She currently resides in Eerste River and offers shelter to more than 14 children who show up on her doorstep daily. The youngest is two years old. This has encouraged her to embrace acts of unselfish love and caring, dipping into her own cupboards and pocket, ensuring that each and every hungry stomach gets a warm meal. “This is how I grew up, I did not have the luxury back then which I have now,” said Benurita. She regularly “adopts” children, with the help of the police, providing shelter to chil- dren who have strayed from home. Many have been exposed to the foul and vile nature of drugs and alcohol. “It’s a very heartbreaking sight to see.I can only be thankful that my own children are not exposed to this,” she said. Her house is in a constant whirlwind of untidiness and all of the children address her as “Mom”. She recalls fond memories of her grand- daughter, Cleo Phillips (6), constantly ask- ing why she is not allowed to play with chil- dren her grandmother allows in the house. She is hardly influenced by the negative comments passed by neighbours and pas- sers-by. Cleo however indulges in the rich friendship and mutual companionship she shares with her gran. “Children are my weakness,” she said. Her family, daughter Claudia and son Lu- an are extremely supportive of the good deeds which their mother has carried out. “They accept it, as it is. Sometimes I lash out at them but they understand because this is how they were taught and brought up,” she says. Benurita, a former nurse at a private hos- pital in Durbanville endured a life changing experience in 1994, after an accident left her with a severe shoulder injury and constant limp. The then 17-year-old said: “As the accident happened, I should have been dead, but it has changed my life for good.” Benurita is a Personal Assistant at the Stellenbosch Universiteit Sentrum vir Peda- gogie (SUNSEP). Her work colleagues chip in by bringing clothes, food and other necessary items which she hands to the children blooming on her doorstep. “I want to give others, that which I did not have when I was a child. To see the faces of the children, is a big enough ‘thank you’ for me,” Benurita said. She was a finalist in the TygerBurger and Radio Tygerberg, Moeders van die Gemeen- skap Competition. Her first initial reaction was: “Not what I expected. It’s not what I wanted, it’s the fac- es of the children which is important,” she said. She acknowledges the impact which un- employment has on parents in the Eerste River community. “There are many children walking around aimlessly but any child is my child. I am pre- pared to walk a journey with them,” she says. V If anyone would like to donate food, clothes, or any other goods. contact Benurita on 072 118 6342 or 021 808 3483.

Most of us look forward to the comfort of ourbed when we are fatigued. And for onelucky Radio Tygerberg listener, quick re-sponse by sms meant comfort and supportfor her bed-ridden father.

For Anna September of Eerste River andher dad, Hendrick, the fun Bed Competitionheld by Radio Tygerberg and the BedroomBoutique at Hirsch’s in Milnerton meant abrand new bed for Hendrick, who is cur-rently bed-ridden due to illness.

The competition challenged the radio sta-tion’s staff to try and fit the maximumnumber of staffers onto a double-sizedCloud Nine bed in only 30 seconds. The staffmanaged to pile 17 members onto the mat-

tress in the allotted time limit. This meantstaff were able to donate the bed to charity.

Listeners were then asked to nominate aperson in need of a bed and to submit theirentries via SMS, along with their name anda guess as to the approximate number ofstaffers on the bed, to Radio Tygerberg.

Anna September submitted the winningentry and nomination. She had nominatedher father who, because of his illness, need-ed the new bed urgently.

“They were quite relieved about the bed.I was there, and took the picture, so I couldsee the big smile on Hendrick’s face,” saidNardo van Eck, public relations officer atHirsch’s Milnerton.

“The Bedroom Boutique team were hap-py to deliver the bed,” he said.

In celebration of youth month, Tru-Imageyouth development partneredwith theMMIFoundation and the City of Cape Town.

“Youth month is a very important timefor us as an organisation as we are a youthdevelopment organisation,” saidVeroniqueEllers-Zoutman, director of Tru-Imageyouth development.

“We saw the need to bring young peopletogether and educate them on the impor-tance of the choices they make.

“This year, partnerships with the Depart-ment of Social Development, our Localcouncillor, Cynthia Claassen and MMIFoundation andCityHealth Tygerberg Sub-district were embraced to appreciate theyouth of Eerste River.”

In informal settlements there is no elec-tricity and poor sanitation, and for everythree streets occupied, one tap is used.

“We were able to host the event for over500 people, and bring a bit of hope to thecommunity of Greenpark,” she said.

Celebrations were in place to remind theyouth, hailing fromGreenpark, how impor-tant it is to know that they canmake adiffer-ence, irrespective of their background andcircumstances.

The theme of the day was I.MAD ( I MakeA Difference).

The day was filled with local performanc-es, hip-hop groups and singing sensations. All the talent hailing from within the com-munity.

“This brought new inspiration and hopeto the community knowing that theymatterto us, and that they are not forgotten,” Vero-nique said.

Ward councillor, Cynthia Claasen saidthat they should “rememberwhat their par-ents taught them, because all parents justwant the best for their children.”

HIV testing and TB screening was doneby City Health and the importance of know-ing your status was highlighted.

The MMI Foundation, also educated theyouth on making positive choices, whichwill ultimately determine their future.

“We want to inform them of the choicesthat they can make, no matter how difficultand even if they made wrong choices, thatit is never too late to start over again,” she

said.Veronique hopes that this has instilled

skills and knowledge in the youth ensuringthat they are equipped and ready to face theworld with equal opportunities.

“To the youth out there I would like to say‘Stay Tru’, to who you are and never let any-one tell you that you are not good enoughto achievewhat youwant to in life,” she con-cluded.

The journey into jazz for a young Delftsinger takes another giant step whenshe attends a prestigiousmusic camp

in the USA next week.On Friday Adelia Douw boards a flight

thatwill see her attending a five-week eventat the Berklee School of Music.Simply known as “Five-Week”, Berklee’s

Five-Week Summer Performance Pro-gramme, is now in its 27th year, and is thelargest, most comprehensive summer mu-sic programme available anywhere. With its diversity of study options, world-

class faculty, visiting artists, and state-of-the-art facilities, it is the premiere contem-porary music summer programme foryoung musicians. Each summer, approximately 1 000 par-

ticipants from across America and aroundthe world (70 countries) share in thisunique event, experience the summer of alifetime, at the world’s most prestigious in-stitution for the study of contemporarymu-sic.This journey started for the young singer

when she joined the Delft Big Band Projectin 2009, and she has been impressing audi-ences at their performances ever since.“Joining the band was the best decision

that I made, even though I was a bit over-whelmed at first,” she admits.“I always knew that I wanted to sing, but

joining them showed me that it was goingto be a lot of hard work but our band leader,Ian Smith, was always inspiring us to workharder if we wanted to reach our dreams.“Working with them made a very big im-

pact onmy career choice and onmakingmydreams a reality,” she said. Douw is nowstudying Drama and Performance Arts atNorthlink College. The adventure continued for her in 2010

when she was encouraged to attend the vo-cal workshops at the Cape Town Interna-

tional Jazz Festival and audition forBerklee.“It was very exciting to be accepted, but

at the time I felt I was not ready, now I’molder, and wiser,” she smiles shyly.“I feel that Iwillmakeabetter impactnow

and this trip is almost like a stepping stoneto my dream of becoming the best perform-ing artist that I want to be, not just in CapeTown, I’ve got the world in my sights.”The young singer is very excited about

her expectations at Five-Week.“I know that it is just for five weeks but

I think that the knowledge I will get will bewith me for a lifetime.“As a young person this opportunity

means theworld tome and it’s also a chanceto meet young people from across the worldwho share in my passion for the music.”She also said that the achievement of the

Delft Big Band is proving the positive influ-ences that music can have in an area betterknown for its crime and gangsterism.“I think that we have grown into positive

role models in our community. More youtharound us are seeingwhat we are doing andare motivated to join us.“If we could get more financial backing

and support there is so much more that wecan do, but we will not give up on this jour-ney. We have grown into a family, and theband will always be a part of my world andwe just grow stronger after every perform-ance.“With our achievements wewant to show

the world that there is a lot of light that cancome out of this darkness that people wantto see in Delft, and all other communitieswhere crime is causing so much destruc-tion.”Adelia Douw is all packed up and ready

What does suffering from tuberculo-sis (TB) and climbing Kilimanjarohave in common?

While scaling the highest free-standingmountain in the world at 5 895 metres onemight experience shortness of breath, nau-sea and hallucinations. These are just some of the symptoms and

side effects of TB and its treatment.A clinical psychologist at Brooklyn Chest

Hospital, Leigh Rynhoud (40), will attemptto conquer the mountain in September andraise funds for the hospital, particularly forthe treatment of deadly strains of TB.The Bothasig resident says the funds will

be used for two projects, namely visitortransport and a work-skills project.“I know how important support from the

patient’s family is and some of them cannotafford to come for a visit. As for the work-skills project, some of the reasons why peo-ple end up getting TB include not eatinghealthily ornot looking after themselves ap-propriately. To just release them from hos-pital and put them in the same situation af-ter a year of fighting the illness doesn’t help. They must learn something new,” she ex-plains.Thehospital treats about 250 patientswho

suffer from Extremely Drug Resistant TB(XDR-TB).In Rynhoud’s professional capacity, she

faces a proverbial Kilimanjaro every day.She has tomotivate patients who are star-

ing death in the face.“During therapy I would sometimes tell

the patient to look at Table Mountain. Iwould say: ‘You can’t wish yourself to thetop. All you can do is try. And even whileyou walk around the hospital grounds, ifthat is your training for climbing it, it is stilltraining for climbing that mountain’,” con-tinues Rynhoud. So, in order to raise funds and motivate

her patients, she has decided to climb Kili-manjaro.“It could take a patient up to a year to

overcome TB, so my journey started on TBDay on 25 March and will end a year later,”she says.Rynhoud will be paying for the trip her-

self, so all the money raised will go straightto the hospital. The success of her journey doesn’t depend

on her preparations or her conviction, buton people out there donating money for agood cause.

According to her, people gladly donatemoney for cancer or HIV/Aids, but they arenot so considerate when it comes to TB.One of these reasons, according to Ryn-

houd, is that people tend to underestimatethe disease. Which leads to the question, how serious is TB really? She sums up the problem in her blog

(www.kileighmanjarovstb.blogspot.com):“According to the WHO, approximately 8,7million people became ill with TB in 2011,1,4 million people died and 10 million chil-

dren were left orphaned after their parentssuccumbed to this disease worldwide. It isestimated that in the 22 high burden coun-tries there are 10 million people living withactive TB. Sub-SaharanAfrica has the high-est proportion of new cases per populationin the world.“In 2011 it was estimated that there were

nearly 30 000 people in theCapeTownmetroarea suffering from TB.”V To donate go to www.tbhivcare.org and click ondonate and then on the Kileighmanjaro.vs.TB link.

The legacy of a leading writer lives on ina reading project that was officiallylaunched on Saturday.Ravensmead Library hosted the official

launch of Lendz Reading Tutoring Pro-gramme that also offers help in Afrikaans,English, maths and accounting.Heading this initiative is Lendy Swart-

booi, daughter of writer, the late LeonardKoza, who wants it to be a legacy to her fa-ther’s belief that reading was a key compo-nent out of poverty for children from disad-vantaged communities. At the launch she also pointed out the im-

portance that parents and caregivers mustplay in ensuring that their children em-brace the importance of reading.“My father played a huge role in motivat-

ing me to love reading,” she said.“With this project we don’t just involve

the children, wewant the parents to becomepart of their growth as well.“We acknowledge thatwe come frompoor

communities, but why would we want tokeep our children in poverty when we havea resource like a library in every communi-ty that is a passport out of that poverty?“Growing up in Elsies Rivermy father al-

ways told us that the family was not rich, but that he got his wealth of knowledgethrough the library, and that formed thelearning foundation for all of us.

“He was always there to give us encour-agement, even in failure because he felt thatit was just as important to learn from yourmistakes, not give up.”Swartbooi added that with regard to the

reading programme the children who werepart of it since the beginning of the year hadshown remarkable progress.“We have worked very closely with local

schools and the children who started withus at the beginning of the year have im-proved tremendously,” she said.“Their reports speak for themselves and

the teachers tell us that this has meant animprovement in other subjects as well.“We want parents to realise how impor-

tant this investment can be because readingis important for every facet of their futureeducation.”She added that at the moment the project

was made up of three tutors that includedherself, but they would love to see it spreadto other areas.“We have the resources to train people,

but it will take a lot of commitment, but thebenefitswill eventually help thewhole com-munity.“The important factor is that the earlier

we can identify children who struggle toread, the better, because the inability toread is one of the biggest factors for the highdrop out rate in primary schools.”V For more information Lendy Swartbooi can becontacted on 073 270 0211.

For Richelle Graham, founder of the LuckyLucy Foundation, there is nothing morebeautiful in life than a severely abused andneglected animal miraculously recoveringto trust human beings again. In fact, for the past three years Richelle

along with her employees and volunteers atthe foundation have saved or dramaticallychanged the lives of thousands of destituteanimals in and around Cape Town.A commendable reason for this worthy

foundation to be a beneficiary at this year’sTygerBurger “Cause We Can” charity con-cert, which takes place at the Bellville CivicCentre on 28 July. This concert now in its 11th year, will fea-

ture the likes of Juanita du Plessis, AmandaStrydom, Karen Zoid, Albert Frost, KoosKombuis and many more.It all started in 2010 when Richelle found

a dog tied to a railway line. Trains had goneover her, her leg was severed and she waspregnant. She was rushed to the Market Street Ani-

mal Hospital in Paarl where vets did anemergency operation to try stabilise her.Her mangled right front leg was amputatedbut due to the shock and trauma endured, and the anaesthetic and painmedication ad-ministered, she lost all her puppies. They named her Lucy, and the newly

formed foundation was named in her hon-our. Since then Lucky Lucy has gonethrough extensive rehabilitation at theLucky Lucy animal shelter, where she slow-ly adjusted to the amputation.Today she is a very important part of the

Lucky Lucy Foundation’s education drive. She takes trips to schools, so thatwhenher

story is told she can help teach about justice, respect and compassion for all life. The Lucky Lucy Foundation is a non-prof-

it, pro-life, pro-quality of life organisationthat tries to relieve the plight of severely ne-glected and abused township and street ani-mals, but also to socially uplift and educatedestitute and impoverished children and

people in and around Cape Town.“Lucky Lucy is an ambassador for the

voiceless. We oppose any form of cruelty toany animal, be it kicking a dog to inhumanemethods of slaughter for human consump-tion,” says Richelle. After three years Richelle staysmotivated

to see each and every one of the animals theyrescue find happiness in what she calls a“forever home”.She believes the battle against animal cru-

elty and overpopulation in the city can bewon.

“My deepest wish is that all like-mindedorganisations get together and collaboratebecause only through coalition do I havefaith that it can be done.”Funds and monetary support remain her

biggest challenges to date as the foundationstares downever-growing vet bills, food billsand staff salaries. Apart from this they areconstantly in need of “adoptive parents” fortheir animals.“Many people have not yet been reached

to be educated on the effects of backyardbreeding and the facts out there. People need

to know that going to any shelter first beforefinding a furry companion might just meanchanging the life of that rescued animal for-ever and there is nobetter feeling than that,”she says.Every cent of the proceeds for each ticket

purchased from this organisation for the“Cause we can” concert will go towards theorganisation.Tickets cost just R250 and can be pur-

chased from Kerry-Jean 083 271 8114; CarynAllen 083 261 4295 or Marcia van Eck 081 8025114.

Needy students at CPUT got a bursaryboost from The South African NationalZakáhFund (SANZAFWesternCape) lastweek. At a ceremony at the Bellville Campus

representatives of the facility received acheque for R599 220 that will be assisting64 deserving young people from finan-cially disadvantaged backgrounds.SANZAF places a high premium on de-

velopment and empowerment; and there-fore believes that a relevant tertiary edu-cation qualification is one sure way of es-caping poverty in a country with suchhigh levels of unemployment. This belief was also shared by Milcho

Damianov, Director: Advancement De-partment at CPUT, who said that theywere continually challenged to lookat theholistic development of their studentsand financial support was key to their ef-forts.“We can’t put students at the centre of

all we do if we don’t have an enabling en-vironment or the structures and facilitiesto achieve this,” he said.“While education is the vehicle for the

improvement of human life, we need

partners and many hands on the wheelin order to reach this goal.“This is why the on-going and extreme-

ly generous support of our partners atyour organisation is so critical and verymuch appreciated.”He also pointed out that records indi-

cated that there was a considerable in-crease in students seeking financial aid.Last year an amount of R251 768 was di-rectly handed over to CPUT students, anincrease of just more than a 100 %.“A core function of our organisation is

to provide financial support and to assistneedy and deserving students,” ex-plained Moulana Sarfaraaz Hamza, anadministrator for SANZAF in the West-ern Cape.“We recognise that education plays an

important role in determining labourmarket prospects and as an organisation,we have made a concerted effort to be re-sponsive to the dire needswithin commu-nities.”He added that up to R3million has been

at night to significantly reduce the impacton the consumers in the affected areas.“The City of Cape Town’s Water and

Sanitation Department will be installing apressure reduction valve on the 300 mmdiameterwatermain supplying the Silver-sands, Highgate, Camelot, Sunbird Park,Summerville and Wembley Park areas inBlue Downs,” Farouk Robertson, commu-

nication officer for this department said ina statement.“This follows a series of tests conducted

on the water supply network in the areato ascertain the levels of excessive waterpressure on the pipelines,” he said.Robertsonwarned that thewater supply

will be turned off to allow for the installa-tion of a pressure reduction valve.“Residents are kindly requested to store

water in clean, sealed containers for do-mestic consumption,” he said.“Residents are also reminded that, al-

though the water supply might be shutdown for certainperiods, they should treatthe water supply to or on their premises

as normal,” he said. This is so residents do not leave open

taps unattended, which could lead to wa-ter wastage and possible damage to prop-erty once the supply starts running nor-mally again, he said. This work is part of the city’s Water De-

mand Management Plan, which includesthe installationof a rangeof pressureman-agement mechanisms on the water net-work across the metropole.“The city apologises for any inconven-

ience caused during this interruption, butit is essential that we improve our watersupply infrastructure to the benefit of ourconsumers.”

“I love entertaining people, it’s what Ido,” laugh-a-minute Emo Adamssays.

“It’s actually who I am,” he says, adding:“I’m very passionate about being on stage.”While Emo has been in the Afrikaans en-tertainment industry for about five years, hewas always performing. Therewasno epiph-any or decisive moment that pushed him to-wards his career choice. He jokingly points out that he doesn’tthink he had a choice in the matter, he saysinstead; his dad forcedhim into entertainingwith Malay choirs and “Kaapse Klopse”.“One thing led to another and now we aresitting here today,” he says.Emo is known for his hilarious stage pres-ence, which sometimes includes pullingsome funny faces.“I don’t think pulling faces was intention-al, it came over time,” Emo says, sayingagain that he just wants to entertain people. His dancing is another thing that keepsaudiences entertained. “I don’t think any-one taught me to dance, it was a case of imi-tating people,” Emo says.“If Michael Jackson’s on the TV, then youwanted to be like Michael Jackson,” Emosays, adding: “All the good movers and theiconic guys like JamesBrown, were the guysI liked.”

’Cause we CanThen of course there was his involvementwith the Malay choirs and “Kaapse Klopse”which also helped.Emo is one of the artists who continually

support TygerBurger’s ’Cause we Can con-certs by performing for free at the show eve-ry year.“I perform at ’Cause we Can every year, because I can, and I want to,” he says.“With success comes responsibility andthat means you eventually have to help oth-er people,” Emo explains. “It’s all about car-ing and sharing,” he adds.“We do a lot of charities throughout theyear, ‘CauseweCan is just oneof them,”Emosays, adding that he feels that it’s his socialresponsibility to give back.Emowill be at Die Boer this weekwith hisband, Take Note.Emo says the smaller audiences and thespace to test new material are among thethings that make performing at Die Boerspecial. When he isn’t on stage elsewhere, Emo isworkingwith one of his new projects, his AllStar Theatre in Brackenfell.“It was a dream,” Emo says of the theatre. With no help from investors, Emo saved tobe able to open the theatre himself.

Legacy“Like Die Boer, I want to provide a plat-form that can become a legacy for other art-ists.” He wants the theatre to be a space fornew performers as well as more establishedname.Emoandhisband,TakeNote, domorethan 250 shows a year.V To find out more about Emo Adams and hisprojects, visit www.emoadamslive.co.za.V You can catch Emo Adams and Take Note in actionat Die Boer this week (until Sunday). Any self-respecting personwould agree that when a so-called friend forces entry intoyour home to rape you, he justlydeserves a 15-year jail sentence.Even if it happens six years af-ter the heinous incident. This is exactly what tran-spired at the BlueDownsMagis-trate’s Court on June 21, whenJongisile Martinus, a 29-year-oldmale fromMfuleni, was con-victed of the rape of his unsus-pecting victim almost exactlysix years ago.“OnSaturday, July 28, 2007, atapproximately 03:00 the suspectknocked at the victim’s house inMfuleni. The victim recognised

the voice as being that of herthen ‘friend’, Martinus,” saidCapt Nomathemba Muavhafrom the Mfuleni police station.“She opened the door andMartinus asked for a cigarette, but the victim told him she didnot have any. The suspect thenforced the door open and rapedher,” Muavha said.“Mfuleni SAPS station com-mander, Colonel Luyanda Da-moyi welcomes this sanctionand encourages all women to re-port these kinds of crimes to thepolice so justice can take itscourse. They should not be in-timidated by perpetrators andkeep quiet,” she said.

TYGERBURGER | EERSTERIVIER & BLUE-DOWNSWoensdag, 3 Julie 2013

SAREL BURGER

derblom, Migale Dawood, Nathier April (al-mal Jan Kriel-skool), Matthew Alexander,Keanen Parnell, JasonWessels, LoganMoos(almal Westcliff) en Henwille Cleophas (DeGrendel).Voorts is Herman Venter (De Grendel) be-

noem as as die LSOB-verteenwoordiger bydie Akademieweek, terwyl Riaan le Sueur(Westcliff) as een van die SA span se afrig-ters aangewys is.

Tygerbergers maak stem dik

SAREL BURGER

sche Kloof/Walmer, Goodwood t Kuilsri-vier, Hands & Heart t Villager.

LIAM MOSES

The gruelling play-off rounds of the 10th an-nual Engen Knockout Challenge came to anend on Sunday, with 13 teams sealing quali-fication for the finals.Cape Town’s premier under-17 tourna-

ment started at the beginning of June, withover 100 teams fighting to join hosts Santos, defending champions Ajax Cape Town andNational First Division (NFD) side ChippaUnited in the tournament finals. However, with thousands of rands worth

of prizes and bragging rights at stake onlythe best teams have qualified for the finalsin August.Teams from across Cape Town have sur-

vived the cut and both the northern andsouthern suburbswill be strongly represent-ed.Parow based NFD team Vasco da Gama,

Kraaifontein City, Kuils River FC, IslandsRovers, Bishop Lavis FC and Atlantic Na-cional make up the northern contingent, while Claremont’s ASD Academy, CapeUnited, Grassy Park’s Crusaders, GreenPoint Selesians,Hanover ParkFC,Mitchells

Plain’s Kenpark United and Pinelands clubOld Mutual Academy represent the south.Should one of the qualifiers not be able to

participate, Two Oceans Academy, UnitedFC or Eastern Rovers will take their place.Oneof themost surprisingomissions from

the list of finalist is Mitchells Plain’s Wood-lands United, who finished in seventh placeat the finals last year.Woodlands finished in third place in

group four after a solitary victory, withBishop Lavis in first on nine points and OldMutual in second on six points.Lavis were one of only five teams to finish

the secondphasewithaperfect record, alongwith Crusaders, Hanover Park, ASD Acade-my, Atlantic Nacional.HanoverPark topped the scoring charts in

the play-off rounds with 11 goals in theirthree games, while Crusaders were a closesecond with 10.ASD hit the back of the net seven times,

but were the only team not to concede a sin-gle goal. The 10th annual Engen Knockout Chal-

lenge will take place from Friday 16 to Sun-day 18 August.

Cape Town’s club rugby leagues are setfor an overhaul next season when thecurrent format of the competition will

be scrapped. The Western Province Rugby Football

Union (WPRFU) currently runs eight differ-ent leagues of 10 teams each, with the toptwo gaining promotion to a higher leagueeach year. The bottom two teams are rele-gated.

However, as of next year the top 45 clubsin the region will be split into three differ-ent 15-team groups – A, B and C – as partof the same “Premier Competition”.

The clubs seeded from 46-78 on the rank-ings will be divided into three different re-gional competitions, in the “Northern”,“Southern” and “City” Leagues.

ReactionThe change in format has received con-

trasting reactions from some of the city’sbiggest clubs. Michael Reynolds, chairper-son of South Africa’s oldest club, Hamil-ton’s, says he is against the change.

“It takes us away from the strength ver-sus strength (competition). Maties alreadybeat the lower sides in the Super League Aby 80 points and now there are five sidesthat areweaker than the bottom sides in theleague,” he says.

Reynolds adds that the new competition’sother weakness is that teams will only playeach other once in the league stage, before

the top six sides advance to knockoutrounds.

“The structure now – strength versusstrength, home and away – is the only wayit can work. That’s a true reflection. Youplay home and away, no excuses.”

The knockout phase of the competitionwill be similar to Super Rugby, with the toptwo in each group advancing to semi-finals,while teams placed three to six will face offin quarter-finals to determine the other twosemi-finalists.

Teams placed from seventh to 14 in thegroupswill advance to a “TopEight” knock-out competition, with quarter-finals, semisand a final.

Although the top two and bottom twoteams in each group will still be promotedand relegated, the promotion/relegationformat has also changed. The third-placedteam in each league, expect Group A of the“Premier Competition”, will face offagainst the 13th-placed team in the lowerleague, with thewinner gaining promotion.

Chairperson of Primrose RFC, FaghierGamieldien, says the inclusion of a knock-out element is one of the primary reasonshe voted for the tournament.

“If you are in fourth place in SuperLeague B and you know you cannot be pro-moted or demoted then what are you play-ing for?” he says.

“Every year you find Maties or the otherbig clubs winning the Super League A. Thenew structure gives the other clubs achance to win the league. It gives everyone

an opportunity to win.”The regional leagues will take a similar

format, with the 11 teams in each leagueplaying the other sides in their league once.

WinnerThe top three from each league will then

advance to a combined league competition,to play a single round of matches to find anultimate winner.

Teams placed from four to 11 will play an-other round of games in their respectiveleagues.

Although the competition as a wholedrew conflicting responses from the vari-ous clubs, everyone agreed that a majordownsidewas the fact that the second, thirdorunder-20 teamcompetitionswill not havea knockout competition.

Dr Nasief van der Schyff, Collegians RFCjunior vice-president, says the length of theseason could have socio-economic impactson some clubs.

“In the new format each team is guaran-teed only 14 games, while we are currentlyguaranteed 18 games,” he says.

“For a club like Collegians, which usesrugby as an alternative to gangsterism anddrugs, it may result in us not playingenough rugby and putting players at risk ofsome of the socio-economic problems.”

Danny Jones, WPRFU general managerof amateur rugby, declined the opportunityto comment on the new structures, sayingthe union was still in the process of finalis-ing some aspects of it.
