The problem of coastal dune erosionalong thewest coast is a priority for thethree spheres of government who are

“working towards” solving it.Yet, one of the biggest reasons for dune

erosion – the removal of kelp by the city– remains ongoing.Removing kelp frombeaches quickens the

process of dune erosion, as can be seen inthe state of “dunes” in Melkbosstrand.To compound matters, collectors who re-

move kelp and deliver it to feed abalone on

farms, have been removing too much of it.Chairperson of Melkbosstrand Ratepay-

ers Association, John Taylor, elaborates:“When kelp normally washes up, some of itis pushed right up towards the dunes. Thisprotective kelp layer then acts as a harbourbreakwaterwould. It stabilises the dune andassists with vegetation re-establishement.”

Balancing actThe removal of kelp is a careful balancing

act for authorities, since rotting kelp on bea-ches, despite its role in dune preservation,is not a pleasant sight or smell.In fact,Melkbosstrand is aiming to qualify

as a Blue Flag beach, and for that a certainamount of kelp should be removed.Whilst the City of Cape Town removes

kelp froma fewbeaches as a service deliveryfunction, this removal is limited to those be-aches that are subjected to high recreationaluse and no longer function as natural sy-stems.Permits for collectors to remove kelp from

designated beaches are issued by the Natio-nalDepartment ofAgriculture, Forestry andFisheries (DAFF).During Taylor’s correspondence with the

provincial Department of EnvironmentalAffairs and Development Planning

(DEA&DP), hewas told thematter of kelp re-moval has been taken to theProvincialCoas-tal Committee (PCC)where all three spheresof government areworking together to solvethe problem of coastal erosion.

Rapid erosionContinues Taylor: “Since the active har-

vesting of kelp on the main beach... the pri-mary coastal dune has been rapidly eroded.He said the resultant costs of repairs to Be-ach Road would be “inordinate”, and tou-rism to the area, and residents, would alsobe affected.

Over the years collectors havealso been harvesting beyond thekelp removal zones, such as thebeach between 1st and 5th Ave-nue in this coastal town.

Not only have they ignoredwarnings and removed kelp ille-gally, in the process they’ve da-maged infrastructure in the re-sidential area.

One resident states in a letterto DAFF: “During an incident inDecember last year the kelp re-moval truck drove on the pedes-trian pathway between 1st and5th Avenues. Collectors draggedkelp over a lawn in all directi-ons. The lawn is being irrigatedat taxpayers cost and at this ratethere will be no lawn left to irri-

gate. They should be held ac-countable... but since they getaway with it they continue asthey please.”

Odwa Dubula from DAFF res-ponded, saying the collectorswere acting unlawfully.

Melkbos calls foractive ratepayers

Were it not that an innovativecon man pretended to workfor TygerBurger, his cover

would probably not have beenblown. Now he just needs to becaught.

A man who introduces himself asa TygerBurger deliveryman, Ricar-do Bester, is collecting money inGoodwood for his mother’s funeral.Bester states in an affidavit, signedand stamped by the Parow police sta-tion, that his wheelchair bound mo-ther died in a fire in Clanwilliam.

Tall storyRichard Smith, a Goodwood resi-

dent, says he believed this storywhen he heard it the first time andmade a contribution. But threeweeks later he was presented withanother, similar affidavit by the sa-me man, also stamped by the Parowpolice. Only this time, the mother ap-parently died in Oudtshoorn. Bestereither lost two wheelchair boundmothers in fires within three weeksin different towns, or he was tryinghis luck.

The latter seeming more probable,Smith this time insisted on a deathcertificate, upon which Bester star-ted threatening him. Smith thenphoned the Parow police and lear-ned there are 56 outstanding casesagainst Ricardo Bester, although thepolice told him there could be morethan one person by that name.

“A couple of weeks ago one of yourdeliverymen, Cecil Booysen, wascollecting money for two of his colle-agues who were killed in a stabbingincident,” says a Parow reader, Lau-rette Nel. She says he had an affida-

vit stating the story and people werecontributing huge amounts.

“Yesterday, he came again. This ti-me he had an affidavit stating thathis mother died in a fire,” she says.She took pictures of the affidavit, sig-ned and stamped at the Parow policestation.

This affidavit bears the samehandwriting and street address asthe one “Bester” presented to Smithin Goodwood. The address on top isin both cases Sage Road, Athlone,although on the one it is number 6and on the other, number 61.

According to Ulrich Steynberg,operations manager at On The Dot,the distribution company for Tyger-Burger, there is no employee bea-ring either of the two names at thecompany.

It could be that this trickster isoperating under other aliases aswell, as other readers phoned the pa-per over the past weeks with similarstories. A Parow woman says a manclaiming to be a driver of the Tyger-Burger delivery vehicle has an affi-davit of many pages relating the tra-gic death of his mother and sister ina fire in Oudtshoorn. This affidavitwas stamped by the Athlone police.The woman says people on the listcontributed up to R200 per person.She gave the man R20, and receiveda swear word in return.

Affidavits worthlessAnother reader from Parow North

phoned the paper to say someonewith a “letter” tried to engage himin conversation about the driver ofthe TygerBurger delivery vehiclewho supposedly stabbed a woman.

Steynberg visited the Parow Poli-ce to try find out more. He says thepolice told him any person can ob-tain a sworn affidavit. “One writesdown your story on a provided form,and all the police have to do is tomake sure that the ID numbers onthe affidavit and in the applicant’sID book correspond. If they do, theform gets stamped and signed. No co-py is made and the affidavit is alsonot logged anywhere.

“He said as long as the person wri-tes out the affidavit in front of a poli-ce officer, they will also sign it. I toldhim that this is a rather fishy arran-gement, and told him that in that ca-se an affidavit is worthless. Heagreed,” Steynberg says.

He adds that On The Dot, Tyger-Burger and People’s Post do not sup-port or approve any form of beggingor collection by their employees.

The sum of R1.7 million is burning a ho-le in Joachim Fassmann’s pocket.Ten years of volunteer work by

members of Blaauwberg Animal Trust(BAT) has come to a complete standstill dueto various factors, themost important beingthat local government would not give themsuitable land to open an animal shelter bet-ween Montague Gardens and Blouberg-strand.BAThasbeendormant for overayearand

the shop the volunteers ran to raise moneyhas long since closed its doors.But the money raised lurks in the back

of Fassmann’s mind.

Give it away nowHe desperately wants to give it to someo-

ne deserving.“Believeme, Iwant to get rid of themoney

and disappear into the sunset,” he says.This is no easy task, however, as he ex-

plains: “I have approached a few organisati-ons and offered to give them the money ongood terms, but they have mostly ignoredme,” adds Fassmann.

He is looking for someone, or an organisa-tion, to use the money to establish an ani-mal shelter in the vicinity of Table View,Bloubergstrand, Montague Gardens orMelkbosstrand.This has always been the primary goal of

BAT, but the members “lost heart” whenthey could not find suitable land.Ward counsellor Heather Brenner says

she is keen to see such a shelter in the vici-nity, and she recognises the need for it, butthe land the City of Cape Town offered toBAT was seemingly never good enough.“We found land for them on two occasi-

ons. In the very early days of their requestwe offered them land in and around Killar-ney Gardens. They turned it down becauseit would not be visible to the public. Theywanted the land between the DiepriverBridge and the Potsdam Taxi rank, but wehave a plan for that specific stretch of land,”explains Brenner.Fassman told TygerBurger that the land

offered nearKillarney race trackwas belowthe 50-year flood line and would never havesufficed for a shelter.Fassmann maintains that the city never

came up with “anything remotely usable”.The reasons behind the cessation of BAT

are secondary to the trust’s future, howe-ver.Someone needs to take the baton from

Fassmann’s hands.

Care for animalsBoth he and Brenner want to see the mo-

ney spent on caring for animals.Says Fassmann: “The money is safe in a

trust account and accounted for, our booksget audited annually. The interest earned isbeing used to subsidise the monthly rentalfor the smallholding occupied by Dassen-berg Horse Rescue (R3 000, being 50% of themonthly rent). AnotherR2 000 amonth goestowards one of the local vets onBlaauwbergRoad. She is a one-woman charity doingsterling work in Table View. This money ispaid directly into her account. Our conside-rable war chest has been pledged to any ge-nuine established animal welfare preparedto open a branch in our area, or a group ofenthusiastic people who have made someprogress towards establishing a shelter andare prepared to do the legwork to find accep-table land.”

The crowd gave a half-hearted applausewhen the Hip Hop crew “Lil Shifterz”from Melkbosstrand was introduced.

As the crew walked onstage one of themembers, 12-year-old Juan-Marc Loretz,was slighty terrifiedwhile another, 14-year-old Justin de Nobrega, was quietly confi-dent.In the back of the hallway the six-member

crew’s coach, Rudi Ward, came face-to-facewith the reality of the situation.These kidswere justmoments away from

winning the junior division at the SouthAf-rican Dance Hip Hop Championships.“Don’t mess this up guys... just focus,” he

thought to himself nervously.TheownerofDanceUnitedSchool ofDan-

ce, Liezl Künz, felt particularly jittery. Notonly did the crew represent her danceschool, but her son Luc was taking part.“The Lil Shifterz are not well known in

the Hip Hop circles,” elaborated Liezl.Would they surprise the audience?It took the crowd just 10 seconds to lose

it.“The audience all stood up during the

routine and cheered them along. It wasamazing!” said Liezl proudly.“One could see what the cheering did to

the children. They were so chuffed. Theenergy in their routine came from the audi-ence, and the result was there for all to see.Simply outstanding.”The first-timers blew everyone out of the

water when they were crowned South Afri-can junior champions at the prestigiousevent.Says Rudi: “I was shouting my lungs out

andwhen theywon I just ran backstage andhugged them. I was so happy. All thosehours of practice paid off.”Now, if they can raise the neccessary

R30 000 per dancer, they will be heading toLas Vegas in August to compete in the

World Championships.Their coach has experienced this honour

himself a few years ago and knows what ittakes to make an impression on the worldstage.Liezl attributes the crew’s success to the

hard work and determination of eachmem-ber, and of course, Rudi’s inspired choreo-graphy.Whenhe took on the responsibility of coa-

ching theyoungsters inDecember last year,they were just a group of dancers with po-tential.Now they are ready to take on the world.Liezl, who has seen the effect dancing has

had on her own son, cannot emphasize theimportance of hip hop enough.“The children have developed unbelieve-

able coordination. In a usual dance techni-que there are a certian amount of movesevery eight seconds. In hip hop everythinghappens three times faster. It stimulates achilds brain and it triggers their concentra-tion levels tremendously. My child’sschoolwork has improved in leaps andbounds.”Considering the incredible number of

hours these children put into their routine,this academic achievement becomes evenmore noteworthy.Thanks mainly to Rudi’s inspiration and

the members’ perspiration, Lil Shifterz hasnow shifted stealthily into the spotlight.And when they pounce, Las Vegas will

know it.The Dance School will be having a fun-

draising “SportQuiz” on 6June inMelkbos-strand, where there will be great prizes tobe won. Of course, many will go to actuallysee Lil Shifterz in action.More about the fundraiser will be publis-

Sabrina’s dream used to be somethingher mother simply endured – up to apoint.

When Sabrina was just two-years-old shestood in front of a mirror and sang her heartout.Inevitablyhermotherwould yell: “Quiet!”A lot has changed since then.These days Sabrina Jakubowski (17), a

grade 11 pupil at CBC Senior High school inParklands, sticks to the notes quite expertly.Her undeniable talent has been spotted by

international scout from the United States,Kim Myers.As a result Sabrina’s dream of “making it

big in the real world” got a massive push inthe right direction – to Orlando, Florida.She elaborates: “To get there I had to com-

pete against top singers in all the provinces

in Johannesburg. I made it through and willnowbeoneof 30 competing singers represen-ting South Africa...”But before she could follow her dream she

had to first raise R60 000, but she didn’t letthis hurdle stand in her way.Within three months the Jakubowskis

managed to reach this target through vari-ous fundraisers.Now, armed with a lot of confidence and

a little bit of luck, Sabrina hopes to leave alasting impression on national and interna-tional agents when gracing the big stage.The ARTS (Applause Rising Talent Show-

case) is a well respected family orientatedevent and will apparently offer substantialexposure to industry professionals.For five days, hand selected talent fromall

over the world will be in attendance to “gaineducation, exposure and encouragement”from these authorities.The pressure that comes with performing

is not new to Sabrina, she entered the CapeTown Voice last year and made it to the top10.The pressure might, however, be a bit mo-

re intense during ARTS, but Sabrina is rea-dy for it.“I will be nervous, yes, but once I get on

stage then I will know that this is my chan-ce,” she exclaims.“I want to complete my matric and then

ideally move to America and try to break in-to the pop music scene over there.”She reserves special thanks for her mo-

ther, Andrea, who has been supporting herfor years.“I used to want her to stop singing, but

now I just want her to sing the whole time.I am extremely proud of her,” says Andrea.

It was a silver evening at the MilnertonPlayhouse when the recent Milnerton Play-ers Milly’s Awards celebrated the best ofthe 2013 productions.

Coming out tops was A lovely Sunday forCreve Coeur, a Tennessee Williams play di-rected by Judith Herbig.

Scooping best actress, best supporting ac-tress, best director and best production,this play was definitely the highlight of theprevious season.

The best actor award went to TimothyMayers for his performance in Children ofthe Wolf.

The evening also celebrated 25 years of

the Milnerton Playhouse and its respectedplace in the community.

Showcasing a wide variety of producti-ons has been the mandate of Milnerton Pla-yers and the very popular and regular per-formances at the well-established venue ha-ve seen young many actors going on tobecome professionals. With more than 108productions under its belt, theatregoers ha-ve much to look forward to in the future.

Petra Schiebe won the best actress award for A lovely Sunday for Creve Coeur, Willy Sass wonbest supporting actor for It runs in the family and Brigitte Scherz took the award for bestsupporting actress for A lovely Sunday for Creve Coeur.

Merit certificates were presented to theprincipals or representatives of the topschools in the Western Cape at the launchof a new initiative at the Centre of StudentRecruitment at Stellenbosch University(SU) last week.

This group includes schools that were re-cognised by the Western Cape EducationDepartment as the top academic schools inthe Western Cape after the 2013 matricexams, as well as schools that deliveredgood results despite difficult circumstan-ces. The schools also identified learners toattend the event.

Various schools and learners from theWest Coast were invited to attend.

Prof Russel Botman, SU’s rector and vice-chancellor, thanked the schools for theirhard work.

“We have to notice it because we benefitfrom it,” he said. To the learners he said thetime is here to make important decisions,not only about their careers but about theirfutures. We are aware of the role young peo-ple will play in the future. The country can’twait much longer for your leadership,” headded. He elaborated on the opportunitiesand support students enjoy at SU, and em-phasised the university’s pursuit of excel-lence.

“Stellenbosch University is a place wheresuccessful students come and where theydo not fail. A place where they get the oppor-tunity to build their future,” he concluded.

When his song, “Love Can” exploded onSouth African airwaves, few people realisedthe man behind the anthemic song wasSouth African.

Shaun Jacobs was amazed by the song’ssuccess, but says the band had worked hardfor it.

They were a little worried about how localstations would receive it. “It’s a little diffe-rent,” says Shaun, but “that’s a chance thatyou take when you try to stretch the bounda-ries a little bit.”

“Love Can”, the title track off his newestalbum, catapulted the career of the multi-in-strumentalist from Johannesburg into thelimelight, but it wasn’t his first hit.

In 2012he released thealbum,PaperWingsand the single “With You”, became one of on-ly 16 South African songs to make it onto theKia top 100 chart that year.

In studio, Shaun is a one man army. Hewrites, plays all the instruments and hand-les recording, mixing and production him-self, but on stage he is joined by drummerAndrew Sowter and bassist Craig Sparks.

The three showcased their energy to localaudiences in December when they opened

for Nickelback’s South African tour afterShaun’s agent sent their music to Big Con-certs, who sent it on to Nickelback.

“They came back to say they love the stuff,they’d love us to be a guest artist for them.

“The concerts themselves were just betterthan we could have dreamed. The way theaudiences responded to us was incredible, italmost felt like it was our show.”

When it comes to writing and producing,he says the band is “trying to be mains-tream, but we’re trying to find a unique wayof doing it”.

The band is currently working on newsongs and jamming a lot. “We love workingthings out in the band room and finding outthings we could do live on stage that are inte-resting.”

“We’re feeling inspired at the moment cre-atively.” He is mum on a tentative releasedate for the new album though.

Lloyd Harris (17) is the number one ran-ked u-18 junior tennis player in Africaand the only player from the continent tobe ranked amongst the top 100 juniors inthe world.

This achievement earns him theTyger-Burger Sportstar of the month award inconjuction with SuperSport’s Let’s Play,Bosman, McNulty and du Toit Optome-trists and Shihan Hennie Bosman of theWelgemoed dojo.

Lloyd is currently ranked 77th on theworld junior rankings. He was a finalistin the singles during the Africa Cup anda winner in the doubles with fellowcountryman Brandon Laubser.

The ITP (International Tennis Federa-tion) invited him to tour Italy and playin the Junior French Open.

“I amreally excited about playing over-seas. There is also a chance that I canplayin the Junior u-18 Wimbledon tourna-ment. That will most certainly be one ofthe highlights of my career thus far. Asfar as I know if you play at Wimbledon

you get to share the same cloakrooms andplay on the same courts as the top profes-sionals. It will be awesome just to watchhow they go about their business,” saidLloyd.

He gets home tutoring with the help ofCurro in Durbanville.

He has quite a hectic daily schedulewith his coach Anthony Harris in SeaPoint.

“I train six days aweek.My daily routi-ne basically consists of two hours on thecourt, one hour gymnasium training, onehour fitness andanother twohourson thecourt.

“Yes, it is hard work and I need to bedisciplined, but in the end it is all worthit and the results are proof that I am onthe right track.”
