Address of the President of the jury international competition T&T, Helsinki 2013

This year 2013, the international competition Typhlo & Tactus met in Finland. This country devoted large means to youth literature and to its writers/illustrators. And this investment has had impacts: recent research shows that young Finnish are among the most advanced in reading. We wish that across the world, people in charge of education and culture will be inspired by this model and sustain initiatives devoted to youth literature for visually impaired children. Along 4 days, 8 judges and 2 technical counselors studied 61 entries coming from, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Rep, Finland, France, Italy, Netherlands, Lithuania, Norway, Romania, Slovenia, United Kingdom, United States of America, and from two new countries: Colombia and India. In 2000, 4 countries, Belgium, France, Italy, and United Kingdom participated in Tactus, the first competition of tactile illustrated books in the world. This year, 23 countries are registered in Typhlo & Tactus. This rise shows that the initial objectives are developing:

Stimulate design of tactile illustrated books for visually impaired children to provide a wide offer according ages and interests.

Break isolation of people designing these books Meet other having other point of view about tactile books Exchange prototypes, ideas Improve quality and techniques

Page 9: TYPHLO & TACTUS AWARD 2013 - Celia · Nr. Country Entry (orig.) Entry (English) Author 23 F 1,2,3 boutons 1,2,3 buttons Panciroli Murielle 24 LT Mano batai buvo du I had a pair of

Unfortunately, because of the lack of funding and an administrative structure, the entries awarded are no more produced. How to solve this paradox: rise of prototypes design on one hand and difficulties to establish an international production on the other hand. Yet, the award without production has little interest for visually impaired children.

Typhlo & Tactus is recognized by: •scholars specialised in tactile pictures and touch •international organisations -ICEVI (International Council for Education of People with Visual Impairment)

-IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People)

For the T&T 2013 competition, the jury noticed that from all over the world, the same topics were chosen: •about chicken, butterfly •finding objects •closure of pockets •search: shoes, animal Quite a lot of entries were made in fabric, often with real objects, that made books very thick. The stories should be more original In order to decrease these weaknesses seen in 2013, the T&T group will think about it to find solutions. Before ending this speech, I would like to thank: •Irmeli Holstein and all the team of Celia Library for the Blind for its warm hospitality and for all the logistic that enabled the best condition for the jury’s work •the judges for their rigorous selection. I wish that the entries awarded in Helsinki could be produced to offer dream and access to reading to all visually impaired children.

For that, we all have to keep on joining our skills to go ahead and promote the production of the awarded tactile illustrated books.

Congratulations to all the authors of these tactile illustrated books. I wish that the Typhlo & Tactus competition will continue to promote the creation of tactile illustrated books more and more efficient to the delighting children and their circle. After several selections, here are the results of the Typlhlo & Tactus competition 2013, declared Sunday at 5pm in the Helsinki Book Fair.

Page 10: TYPHLO & TACTUS AWARD 2013 - Celia · Nr. Country Entry (orig.) Entry (English) Author 23 F 1,2,3 boutons 1,2,3 buttons Panciroli Murielle 24 LT Mano batai buvo du I had a pair of

The aesthetic fabric book goes beyond a simple representation of a picture. It requests the child imagi-nary who will create his/her own story while exploring the pages. This book can be used by young chil-dren as well as by older one. It is too for sighted children an invitation to touch. The end is very tender.

This book looks simple but is very rich. The child is actor even if he/she is not reader. It is a journey whose we follow the path. Material corresponds well to the notions mentioned. The child can touch things for-bidden (in the trash can). This book mixes education and pleasure.

1rst prize - La fabuleuse montagne (The Fabulous Mountain)Erika Forest - Belgium

2nd prize ex aequo - Merirosvotarina (A Pirat Story)Maarit Korhonen - Finland

Here is a book about pirates that boys will love. The hero doing fooleries little by little improves. A child can takes objects at full hands, move items, fell the varied textures. It could be interesting to add a CD with sea sounds.

Page 12: TYPHLO & TACTUS AWARD 2013 - Celia · Nr. Country Entry (orig.) Entry (English) Author 23 F 1,2,3 boutons 1,2,3 buttons Panciroli Murielle 24 LT Mano batai buvo du I had a pair of

The following have been selected among the best 7 ones :

The Stocking Animal, DIESEN Annette - ND

This little collage book is built in an original way. The story is funny, the end unexpected. Visual and tactile contrasts are enough sharp. Short text adapted to young readers.

Missä on Jukan sukka?, KERÄNEN Vuokko - FIN

A story about lost things means something real for families. For the child, looking after an item makes him want to explore: inside, under, on top, with a good use of the page space. The searching is tactile so visually impaired and sighted are equal.

Una storia che sale molto in alto, MARCHEGIANI Gioia - I

It is a book of mediation between sighted (print) and blind (tactual) children. It addresses to older chil-dren, who even if they don’t see, like to recognize print for sighted. Here it is possible because print letters in relief are big enough. Material allow to understand that the child, hard at the beginning will improve and become more sweet.

Foglie, KERÄNEN Vuokko - PIRRONE Francesca

The size of this book is very interesting. The text, important to understand the story, is playing with simplicity. The silhouettes of the leaves are in wood. Their shapes round or peaked express feelings. The ending game that turns, is a surprise for the f ingers.

Each judge’s favorite entry

Each judge chose a “Favorite entry” among of the 61 books.

Roos and the dreamcather, KOOPMAN Floris, ADERLIESTEN Karin, JAMIN Laura, TITARSOLEJ Tim, ALHADI Yasmin - ND

This story gives a chance to dream to the children. Tactual illustrations are complementary to the story. Real objects are used and the child can handle them. Illustrations are also nice for the sighted family.

Dutch Judge

Bo, Messy and shampoo, VYAS Tanya - IND

A lovely, funy story. excellent textures and contrast between them. Nice things to f ind. Let down by its manufacture not its ideas. Nice brother/sister relationship. Nice to see the boy being the clean one, many books are about dirty boys and clean girls.

English Judge

Matti jääkiekko-otteklussa, SAARINEN Anne - FIN

This is a book about hockey, so boys will appreciate it. They can manipulate objects: ice skates, hockey stick. It is a intersting situation for children who don’t know the sport. Pages can be removed which fa-cilitate handling.

Polish Judge

Arkiset arvoitukset. Mikä se on ?, Pekkarinen Anja - FIN

In that book, I liked the idea to integrate daily life objects and the different pockets on each page. Then, make the child guess the hidden object in the pocket make this book exiting for him.

Belgium judge

Ragai, ZYGINTAS Cigas - LT

Illustrations represent different antlers: deer, elk, antelope, buffalo, etc. Normally, these can’t be touched. The visual contrast white on black is very strong. The thickness of the illustrations allows the blind child to fell quite well the different shape of the antlers.

Czech Judge

Page 15: TYPHLO & TACTUS AWARD 2013 - Celia · Nr. Country Entry (orig.) Entry (English) Author 23 F 1,2,3 boutons 1,2,3 buttons Panciroli Murielle 24 LT Mano batai buvo du I had a pair of

Y después del huevo qué ?, FERNANDA GONZALES CASTILLO MariaDELGADO CORONADO Katheryn - CO

Good colour and contrast and material contrast. I was very fond of the story.

Finnish Judge

Zirafka Zofka, TABOROVA Pavla - CZ

The main character can be taken in hand and that facilitates the relation with the book. The story is well built and the adult can read it to the child. One item added on each illustration is judicious, because that allows a better understanding for the child. The representation of the snow is cold and gives a good feeling. The many leaves caress the hands. In France, the giraffe offered to babies is called Sophie and the one of the book look very much the same.

French judge

Cric-Crac, Monique Sommer, Marcelle Peeters - B

It’s a funny story, original, which discuss the fact that to solve problems is easier when one collaborate with other. This book is multisensorial (there is sound) and interactive (one can move matches on the pages. This is a nice story to read to a child at it is time to go to bed.
