UCLA’s AverageTemperature By Month

Student-Athletes Experience the Best Weather

Local Weather Conditions

The beautiful city of Los Angeles andthe UCLA area enjoy plenty of sunshineyear round. The Santa Ana windsflowing out of the eastern desert bringon hot, dry weather, especially in thevalleys. This condition is most likely tohappen in the Fall.

Despite the palm trees and the nearbyPacific Ocean, Los Angeles is nottropical. UCLA has a typical desertclimate – hot dry days and cool nightswith a sea breeze. There are bigtemperature and climate variationsbetween areas within and near LosAngeles.

The Los Angeles basin (where the UCLAcampus is located) tends to be coolerthan the San Fernando Valley which isdrier and hotter. Just 90 miles away,Palm Springs can be baking, whilenearby Lake Arrowhead can have snow.

Rainy season is primarily in Januaryand February when it rains an averageof 4-5 days per month. January is therainiest month. Hottest temperatures arelate Summer and early Fall, with highsin the 80’s.

The UCLA area averages 334 sunnydays a year and is only 5 miles fromthe Pacific Ocean.

What Do You Bring With You?

Well, we have a few suggestions for theparent(s) worried about what to packfor your new Bruin. You might want tohave a few pair of shorts and tee shirts, sandals and some sunscreen. For thefew days a year that we DO have coldor rainy weather, it would be wise tobring a jacket or sweats, tennis shoes,an umbrella and a hat. Of course you’llneed a back pack and your toiletries, like any other campus. Bring a radio ifyou want, though you won’t need acomputer because of the computer labsfor athletes. Bring a bike or scooter, butdon’t worry about a car. Parking islimited anyway and you can alwaysfind a ride if you need one. Since mostthings you’ll need are within walkingdistance, that won’t be too often. Bringyour favorite pillow or a TV if you haveone, but don’t worry if you don’t.

There are numerous local beaches near the UCLA campus for swimming, surfing or just sun bathing.(Photo courtesy of LA Convention and Visitor’s Bureau)

UCLA Alma Mater(“Hail to the Hills of Westwood”)

By Jeane M. Emerson, Class of ‘29

UCLA and Cal shared an Alma Mater until1925, when a UCLA student wrote a songcalled “Hail Blue and Gold.” It was UCLA’soffical Alma Mater until 1960, when studentsobjected to the reference of UCLA as the“California of the South.” The Emerson songreplaced the old song and is the officalAlma Mater we sing today. Traditionally, outstretched fingers in the form of a “V”should be held high over the head whilesinging after sports events. The “V” repre-sents victory.

Hail to the Hills of WestwoodTo the mighty sea belowHail to our Alma MaterShe will conquer ev’ry foe

For we’re loyal to the SouthlandHer honor we’ll upholdWe’ll gladly give our hearts to theeTo the Blue and to the Gold
