    Despite the World Cup placing huge pressures onTwitter, the rst session of the #ukedchat was verypopular, with many joining in the debate. Manyindividuals from different sectors of education dis-cussed. The full archive of all the comments can befound on the Wiki site. It was evident that a consen-sus was formed in that contributors felt that it wasno good throwing lots of technology in the face ofthe adverse teacher, and that the job should be doneslowing and smoothly with mentor programmes,

    showing colleague the positive effect on learningtechnology can have.

    If you could revise the curriculum, what would it

    look like?

    Summary of Discussion

    The second ever #ukedchat was a lively, quick-re,stimulating discussion with much consensus andagreement amongst contributors about their visionsfor curriculum reform.

    Key features of peoples ideal curriculum seemedto be that it should be

    Learner-centred Flexible Creative Thematic/project-based Relevant Community/locality-based Outdoor and/or in different learning

    spaces.

    There was some discussion about how realisticsuch aspirations might be with observations andcomments being made about all stages of educationbut with a feeling that EYFS (Early Years Founda-tion Stage) seemed to be getting many things right.Questions were also asked about the degree of riskinvolved in reforming curriculum and how wellplaced schools are to take such risks given a climateof inspection and accountability.

    There was also discussion of of QCA Scheme of workunits and their potential shortcomings.

    Topic of Discussion How can we use collaborativetools to enhance learning?

    This was broken down into subquestions:What do we mean by collaboration?What are the barriers to collaboration?How do we encourage collaboration between scho-ols at teacher level?Who needs to drive the collaboration?

    Summary of Discussion

    The discussion was varied with several threads run-

    ning through it. It is clear from the discussion that allof those posting were convinced that collaborationhas to be at the heart of educational developments.It was agreed that collaboration has to include andinvolve all stakeholders with a call to ensure thatthis included parents.There is still a job to be done with developing itin our own establishments as well as across thepiece. Initially there were some suggestions froman ed tech point of view of what could be used tosupport collaboration wikis, blogs, video confe-rence, dabbleboard, Wallwisher, Mahara, collabo-rative mindmapping, VLE, podcasting, Voicethread,Skype, raf.k.The discussion then moved onto exploring the bar-riers to collaboration it became clear that edchattersbelieve they sit at various levels. It was suggestedthat a fear factor remains with to many teachersbut also there appears to be several other barriersincluding knowing the tools, blocking of applica-tions by frewalls, seeing how online tools can aidcollaboration and a fear on the part of managementteams and governing bodies of online participation.

    There was a sense in the discussion that none ofthe barriers were insurmountable but did need to

    be recognition that people move at different pacesand not all children are motivated by technology.The edchatters moved onto how we can encourageteacher level collaboration starting with Teachmeet

    and then Twitter.Bev Evans told us about work taking place in herschool where staff are mentoring each other theyare moving towards a different approach to learningwhere collaboration is at the centre.We closed the conversation with thoughts of whoshould drive the collaborations discussed duringthe night and closing statements. There was gene-ral consensus was that teachers need to take res-ponsibility for driving collaboration involving theirmanagement teams at all stages.

    It was an excellent discussion demonstrated by thefact that the hour seemed to speed by with an em-phasis on more than just technology. It was clearthat all believed that collaboration is worth inves-ting in, should be spread across schools and needsworking at.

Wealso talked a lot about ways to get teachers to bemore creative and to take risks as well as providinga culture for children to do the same. Some people

    talked about taking a whole-school approach to crea-tivity and this seemed to work well. The generalconsensus is that creativity needs to be embraced bythe head teacher and by management before it canbe fully embedded into the school. There needs tobe an element of risk from teachers and this needsto be modelled for the children. Once they see howwe deal with risks and failure, they can becomebetter at it themselves. Providing children with theopportunity to try different tools and to have theseto hand will help to develop their creativity.We discussed whether it was possible to assess crea-tivity and with this it was decided that our assess-ment also needs to be creative.

    How do we make the use of interactive whiteboardsTRULY interactive?

    Summary of Discussion

    The discussion evolved around WHO the boardsare interactive for staff/pupils and HOW theyare interactive is it the resources or the board?The use of IWBs as gloried/funky projectors see-med to be the main issue raised. Suggestions to im-prove the interactive experience of pupils includedtraining of all staff properly including TAs andadding software to pupil pcs/laptops so they could

    use in other contexts/prepare their own resources.Suggestions for how to use interactively includedusing response controllers, having the board at age-appropriate heights/considering where the pupilsare when the board is being used, ensuring latestSmartboard 10 software loaded up (as the galleryhas lots of editable, interactive activities), as a re-cording tool for dyslexic pupils/as a group activity,combining use with other tools such as visualisers/microscopes/ gyroscopic wireless keyboards andmice, using interactive games, for shared writing/an-notating/screen captures and recording, for math ac-tivities that benet from manipulation, using web 2tools including collaborative tools with other classes/schools, combining with use of mini whiteboards toensure interactivity for all. A discussion about therelevance of powerpoint included suggestions aboutusing Prezi/slideshare, making ppts less linear andmore interactive, including using multimouse andpptplex. Some are quite happy without the interac-tivity, others treat as part of larger teacher toolkit.Pupil use of iwb in earlier years may promote nemotor control. In conclusion, its the way iwbs are

    Once again a fast paced talk this time with the fo-cus on Reecting on the school year what worked/didnt work? What will you improve on next year?

    Although a lot of the talk revolved around the useof ICT and sites that had worked and not worked,some non-tech issues came through.

    A big one was marking and how it was hard to keepon top of; it was felt that despite good intentionspeople would be behind by Christmas at the latest.A discussion revolved around ways to solve this.

    Ideas included:

    Better use of AfL peer marking in particu-lar was discussed

    Better use of VLE so that homework/ taskscould be given in different ways

    Mix of written tasks vs. spoken tasks

    Others felt that they would like to make better use oftheir outdoor areas and some discussion revolved

    around Forest Schools (see below for link on infor-mation).

    Through discussion of ICT the overall and under-lying principles that came out was that these toolsare often used to help children take more controlof their learning. This matches with the AfL ideas

    and even better use of VLE.

    Although prompted by me I do think that some ofus may be thinking a little more about our work lifebalance however I could be wrong on this.

    I think ultimately the thing that everyone decided onwas the use of Twitter and how next year they wouldcontinue to set aside time to attend the Ukedchats.This is seen as a positive time to talk to others andexpand the PLN that we are all developing.

    I am hoping that everyone enjoyed the night as Idid it has made me think about things I intend todo better next year and hopefully helped those thattook part as well. Remember although reection isimportant at the end of the year it is also importantday in day out to improve our teaching and ultima-tely the learning that occurs in the classroom.

    Session Title

    How can we make our classrooms a more inclusivelearning environment? (Are tech tools the answer?)

    Summary of Discussion:

    The topic was one which was wide open with diverseissues of inclusion being discussed: from makingthings easier for left handed children to making yourlearning environment wheelchair accessible. Again,as has happened in previous weeks, relationshipsin class, staff training and parental involvementwas highlighted as a key factor. The teacher must beproperly informed of the childs needs and the LSA

    supporting must have the necessary skills, otherwiseinclusion is falling down at the rst stage.A number of points were additionally raised aboutworking with pupils in ability based sets: was this agood thing or a bad thing? Votes fell on both sides,but all agreed that even within an ability settingthere can be a number of differing needs and workwould still need adapting and differentiating.Although the discussion was passionate and fastpaced there were a number of things that just madesense immediately. When talking about topics thatengage the pupils it was suggested that certain to-pics often inspired and encouraged the less ablechildren, especially those with ASD, to join in morewithout disrupting the balance of the class. This ledto a quick listing of such topics and a general chatabout other strategies for including pupils with ASD,with visual timetables and dget toys high on thelist.Of course the second part of our topic was Are techtools the answer and there were some solid ideas forusing technology to assist. Some suggestions werepure and simple: like changing the mouse settings

    on a PC. Many ideas were built upon the need foralternative ways to record using easily available

    software, like Audacity or PhotoStory but there wereadditional comments about how VLEs, Ipads andhand held learning devices could be utilised too- all very useful ideas.

    Finally everyone agreed that expectations should behigh for every child in the class: we all want themto develop independent skills and reach their fullpotential. After all, its our job to help them becomethe best that they can be.
