1. What is the best way to prepare a concrete floor for painting?

Theimportantthingaboutaflooristhatitisclean,dry,andetched.Inthelast15years,diamondgrindinghasbecomemuchmorecosteffectiveandthereforepopular.Weseethisastheidealwaytoprepareafloor,althoughgrindingmarksneedtobeminimalortheyarelikelytoshowinthefinishcoat.Somecontractorsstillliketoacidetch,andwearehappywithafloorpreparedthiswaysolongasitisobviouslyetched.Ifafloorhasareleaseagentofsomesortonit,acidwashingisunlikelytobeadequate.Alletchingresiduesmustberemovedpriortopainting.

2. Is a hot, high pressure water blast suitable for the preparation of older uncoated concrete?

Weseegrindingasfirstchoicethenacidetchingassecondchoiceandwaterblastingonlyasalastresort.Ifwaterblastingistheonlyoptionwerecommendthewaterdroplettesttobedoneoncetheconcretehasdriedfromwaterblasting.Thistestiswhereafewdropsofwaterareplacedontheconcreteandifthewatersoaksintotheconcretethentheconcreteshouldbefineforcoatingbutifthewaterdropletsbeadonthesurfaceoftheconcretethentheconcreteneedstobetreatedfurther.

3. Can Gloss Epoxy be applied direct to the concrete?

Yes,butmostlythebettersystemwillhaveSatinEpoxybeingappliedasaprimercoat.SatinEpoxyislowersolids,achievesbetterconcretepenetration,andisveryeasytouse.Westronglyrecommendatestpatchbeforefullapplication.

4. How important are the mixing ratios of base (pack A) to hardener (pack B) in Gloss & Satin Epoxy.

6. How critical is pot life?

7. How should the two packs be mixed?

Thebestwaytomixthetwocomponentsisbyapowerstirrer.Normally,theseareoperatedbyabatterydrill.Mixforabout1minutesothatthecombinedproductisconsistentandthoroughlyblended.

8. Is this system suitable for potable water?

No,itisn’t.ThesystemwerecommendforpotablewaterisSatinEpoxyandthenaSolventFreeEpoxy(forfurtherinformationpleasecontactyourBDM).

9. What is the best method of application?

Thisdependsonthecircumstances.Inlargeareas,sprayingbyairlessmaybethebestoption.Somehelpfulhintshereare:

Satin&GlossEpoxyisvirtuallyodourless.However,sprayingsaturatestheimmediateairwithatomizedpaintthatobviouslymustn’tbebreathedin,evenifitiswaterbasedandnon-toxic.Therefore,ifspraying,makesurenopeopleareinthenearvicinity,andwearaproperrespirator.

11. Roller marks – how can they be avoided?

Satin&GlossEpoxyhasverygoodflowproperties.Alwaysrollinbothdirections–i.e.north/south,andtheneast/west.Ifrollermarkscanstillbeseen,addasmallamountofwaterasthinner–try10%.Makesureitisstirredinverythoroughly.

12. With some floor coatings, bubbles appear in the surface. What are they and how are they avoided?

Thisissueisoftencalled‘concreteout-gassing’.Itoccursparticularlywhenafloorgrinderhasexposedsmallpitholesthatcontainair.Iftheconcreteispaintedonawarmingslab–ie,midmorningormidday,airentrainedinthesepitholescanexpand,andiftheyhavebeensealedover,bubblescanform.SatinandGlossEpoxyarenotgenerallypronetohavingthisissue,butifitisseen,sometipstoovercomeitare:

15. How soon after I am finished can my customer use the floor?

16. Can I use Epoxy coatings outside?
