    WORK TOWARDS FAIRNESSA PRESENTATION FOR:

    UNITED COLORS OF BENETTON

  • "WTF : Work Towards Fairness" is a built environment that unites and inspires us to rectify humanitarian injustices throughout the world.

"WTF : Work Towards Fairness" seeks to help rectify current injustices throughout the world through publicizing the story of Aristides de Sousa Mendes. Aristides de Sousa Mendes was a Portuguese diplomat who saved 30,000 people in WWII by granting them visas into Portugal against governmental orders. He was punished very harshly for doing so, his home was seized, his license to practice Law revoked, and his pension stopped; he died a ruined and impoverished man. Two of the people he rescued were my Grandfather and Great-Grandfather: both architects. My project aims to repair the decrepit Casa do Passal, Aristides' former home, and to turn the property into a museum-campus. The WTF proposal consists of a large and open steel pavilion, painted in light and formed through a panelized construction. The pavilion inserts intself into the homes entry portico and functions as a pop-up museum. The exhibitions will provide: a] context for the Sousa Mendes Story b] a history of world war II events that promoted tolerance and c] an exhibit to show current world problems and how individuals can be inspired by the Sousa Mendes story and take action to aid individuals in compromising situations and promote tolerance.

The core principles through which the UNHATE Foundation operates are:

    - the fight against hate and discrimination in all its forms;- the support of new generations, where youth are the main actors and beneficiaries of concrete projects, communication campaigns and education activities;- the dissemination of the social impact of Art as the key tool of the Foundation in its activities against hate and discrimination.

  • CASA DO PASSALDAWN. DESTITUTION. RESTITUTION.

Casa do Passal is an imposing mansion in the town of Cabanas de Viriato in the province of Beira Alta in North Central Portugal. Built in the 19th century, it was the property of the Sousa Mendes family until it was forfeited to the bank in the 1950s. The house has remained unoccupied ever since, and has deteriorated to the point where it will require both structural

    repairs and extensive interior renovation.

The home was reacquired in 2001, and it is now the familys most ardent dream and desire to repair the home and transform it into a memorial museum to perpetuate the memory of Aristides de Sousa Mendes and the Holocaust. Interfaith supporters of this cause throughout the world, including those in the Jewish communities, Portuguese communities, and others, are eager to see the realization of this

    longstanding dream fulfilled.

the Casa do Passal- a once beautiful family home, now sits dilapidated in Northern Portugal. Its beauty still apparent, its dawn and destitution complete, its restitution ready to commence.

the Casa do Passal as it stands now, forlorn, accompanied by a photo of Aristides de Sousa Mendes and his wife Angelina from the end of the war approximately 10 years later, his altruistic actions clearly took a toll.
