SoE Seminar Report: The Zimbabwean student: examining the experiences of
migrant students in English secondary schools.
Led by Emmanuel Maphosa
16th February 2016
The audience enjoyed a seminar led by Emmanuel Maphosa on Tuesday 16 February 2016. Emmanuel is currently an SoE research student awaiting transfer. The paper presented was an extract from part of the work done to date on his proposed study focused on the experiences of migrant Zimbabwean students in English secondary schools. As a background to the study, Emmanuel informed his audience that there is currently a paucity of literature available concerning the experiences and perceptions of Zimbabwean migrant students in the United Kingdom (UK). Although this is not the case for other African ethnic groups from north and central Africa who are in the UK, those ethnic groups are of different religion and cultural backgrounds compared with migrant students from Zimbabwe, which makes a compelling case to conduct a study about Zimbabwean migrant students in the UK. Emmanuel went on to explain the problem statement, purpose of study, research context, data tools and the theoretical framework. The seminar concluded with sharing of audience views and ideas for Emmanuel to consider as his doctoral studies continue.
