Connecting Points
I gathered with clergy and laity this last week for two separate meetings led by our Bishop. The first one was clergy only and it was a refresher and reminder of our mission and vision in the North Alabama Conference. Our mission is: Discover, Develop and Deploy Spiritual Leaders to make Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World." Obviously, we need a strategy for doing all 3D's and a scoreboard so we will know if we are winning or being successful in making our mission a reality. Take a moment to think about how our church needs to be intentional about this mission. How do we go about discovering spiritual leaders? How do we develop spiritual leaders? How do we deploy spiritual leaders? The second meeting included laity and Bishop Wallace-Padgett updated us on the Commission on the Way. To this point, they have named our common ground as United Methodists and they have identified 4 groups within our denomination surrounding the issues of human sexuality or the LGBTQ reality. Those groups are: Traditional/adaptable, Traditional/non-adaptable, Progressive/adaptable and Progressive/non-adaptable. The Commission will make a proposal to the Council of Bishops and they will present it at a called General Conference in 2019. Pray for God's discernment about these conversations that (as our Bishop said), aren't for the faint of heart. Blessings, Pastor Dean
