DECEMBER 2016
IISE Twin Cities
Did you know? Jeff Moriarty and his two founding partners met at the University of MN. Electrical Engineering Degrees in hand, they found themselves working together for a small engineering services company in downtown Minneapolis. Frequently unable to resist the allure of the 11-6 happy hour, they found themselves with plenty of time to discuss craft beer and how it relates to Life, the Universe and Everything. As engineers, the great interplay between the art and science of brewing beer was a topic of conversation they could never quite shake. Their mission is to make technically excellent beers, and they have integrated their electrical engineering background into the brewery with their listing of ingredients, beer names, and scientific approach to their brewing process and branding.
Date Tuesday, December 6th, 2016 Time 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm Place Tin Whiskers Brewing Company, 125 9th Street East
Saint Paul, MN 55101 Cost $10 for IIE Members, $15 for Non-Members RSVP An e-invitation has been sent out, please contact

Chapter Activity Report
Focus On: Student Outreach Twice this year, in April and October, IISE Twin Cities members came together with SWE Minnesota
to introduce engineering to elementary school-aged girls during SWE’s Annual Wow! That’s
Engineering Event and STEM Girl Scout Patch Event. The events are structured for 200+ girls to
experience a day full of different experiments which are designed to provide girls with early
exposure to science and engineering concepts.

As part of the annual events, IISE Twin Cities always
provides an experiment called Brilliant Bracelets that
provides a hands-on introduction to concepts such as
brainstorming, spaghetti diagrams, layout design and
visual standard work through an assembly line
activity where “bracelet factories” produce Brilliant
Bracelets for picky customers. The girls work in teams
to develop ideas for improvement and implement
their future state in order to produce bracelets more
quickly and with higher quality.
A big thank you to our members and volunteers who
generously donated their time!
Student Scholarship Available
IISE Twin Cities feels that students are a vital part of the growth and activity within the Industrial
Engineering profession. To foster this growth, we offer two $250 student scholarships for current
engineering students. The intent of the IIE Twin Cities scholarship program is to recognize Industrial
Engineering students who have contributed to the growth and activity of the IE profession or their
Student IIE Chapter and have promoted Industrial Engineering within their school or community.
Requirements include completing at least one year of undergraduate course work, being an active
IISE member and completing our scholarship application. The IISE Twin Cities Board of Directors
reviews all the applications for the best candidates. The top two students as voted by the board
receive each $250 scholarship. For an application, questions or comments, contact
[email protected] with “Student Scholarship Application” in the subject line.
Applications are due by Monday, December 12th
, 2016!

Once again, the IIE Twin Cities Annual Student Networking Event was a great success! We had
19 students from North Dakota State University, 13 students from University of Minnesota, 7
students from Dunwoody College of Technology and 5 IISE Twin Cities members in attendance.
The event was held at the Brunswick zone in Brooklyn Park. We spent the first hour eating and
networking and the last 2 hours bowling! There was a lot of great conversations overheard
including reasons behind choosing IE, how each school’s program works, etc.
A big shout-out goes to Nate, Chris, Stephanie and Courtney from the IISE Twin Cites Board for
helping with the event and taking some great pictures! Thank you to everyone who attended
for another successful event.

What is IISE?
IISE is the world’s largest professional society dedicated solely to the support of the industrial engineering
profession and individuals involved with improving quality and productivity. Founded in 1948, IIE is an international, non-profit association that provides leadership for the application, education, training,
research and development of industrial engineering.
With approximately 15,000 members and 280 chapters worldwide, IISE’s primary mission is to meet the ever-changing needs of industrial engineers, which includes
undergraduate and graduate students, engineering practitioners and consultants in all industries,
engineering managers, and engineers in education, research and government.
What is IISE Twin Cities?
The IISE Twin Cities Chapter 38 provides a network for individuals within Minnesota and surrounding areas to
collaborate about industrial engineering. Our members include professionals with industrial engineering degrees, both working in IE and non-IE roles and
professionals working in IE related functions.
We provide monthly events which include topics in professional development, Lean, Six Sigma, Quality,
process improvement and tours at distribution centers, manufacturing facilities, hospitals and consulting firms. We also promote the industrial engineering profession by providing scholarships to IE students and becoming
involved with several student IISE chapters.
