President’s Message

Jeromy Knapp, IISE Twin Cities President.

It’s hard to believe that we are over half way

through the year. I was looking back on our

strategic plan for the year and was happy to see we

were on track for what the board planned to

accomplish for the year.

I would like to thank our amazing group of

volunteers that make up our board. Without their

efforts we wouldn’t be able to host tours, hold

workshops, give out scholarships, etc. If you are

reading this and looking for a chance to volunteer

and give back to your profession, I would

recommend reaching out to anyone on the board

and ask how you can get involved.

Early this year IISE Twin Cities president Jeromy

Knapp represented our chapter at the 2016

National IISE conference. This year it was held

in Anaheim California at Disney land.

The conference started on Saturday with some

leadership training and included speakers,

networking and workshops. It concluded on

Monday night with the Honors and Awards

Banquet. For the 6th year, the Twin Cities

chapter received the Gold Award recognizing

outstanding chapter performance. Disney and

the IEs that hosted the conference this year did

a wonderful job.

If you ever get the opportunity to go to the

national conference it is a great chance to

recharge your IE battery. You get to meet

many exciting like-minded engineers across

the country and learn about how different

companies are facing some of the same

challenges you are facing at your company.

Next year the conference will be in

Pittsburgh starting on May 20th

, 2017.

Lean in the Office Workshop, February 2016

Past Event Recap

In February the IISE Twin Cities sponsored a

workshop on Lean in the Office. The workshop

was taught by our very own IISE members,

Jeremiah Johnson and Christy Strong.

The “office” processes that support our businesses

and customers are filled with activity that does not

add value (i.e. waste). This creates barriers in

communication, resourcing issues, complicated

employee onboarding, quality gaps and employee

frustration which prevents organizations from

taking it to the next level.

This workshop was an interactive training that

provided the Lean background information to sell

the methodology and engage all levels of the

organization for the greatest impact. The final

hour of the workshop was an open round table

discussion with all attendees. Each participant had

the opportunity to share their challenges and

receive expert advice on how the challenges might

be addressed and next steps for delivering success.

Christy Strong Jeremiah Johnson Christy has 14 years of process and organizational improvement by coaching and mentoring Lean in manufacturing, IT, healthcare in USA, Ireland, Puerto Rico, and Costa Rica. She has created and implemented global Lean training that has been delivered to hundreds of employees at all levels. Christy received her Bachelors of Science in Industrial Engineering & Management at North Dakota State University and her Master’s in Business Administration at University of St. Thomas. Christy is a proud member of IISE since 2001.

Jeremiah has spent the past 16 years teaching, mentoring and creating Lean cultures to drive improvements in cost, quality, and customer satisfaction. He instructs over 30 Lean classes a year nationally at companies in a variety of different business sectors as well as many Universities. Jeremiah received his Bachelors of Science in Industrial Systems – Mechanical Design and Product Development and a Master’s of Science in Manufacturing Systems at University of St. Thomas. He also has his Six Sigma Black Belt from SBTI and Lean Certification from the University of Kentucky.

Past Event Recap

Star Tribune Tour, March 2016

IISE Twin Cities had our first tour of 2016 at the Star Tribune newspaper production plant. Star

Tribune’s Heritage Center prints the Star Tribune, the Pioneer Press and CityPages. The 20 event

attendees were given a thorough tour of the production plant by Kevin Desmond, the Senior VP

of Operations.

During the tour, we saw the large warehouse of paper rolls, which are delivered via truck and

rail from the paper mills directly to Star Tribune’s Heritage Center. Next, we saw the five

printing presses that are crucial for printing newspapers each day. There are several large paper

delivery robots that will deliver the paper to these five printing presses. Star Tribune places high

importance on having adequate spare parts and skilled maintenance staff and electricians to

ensure there are no equipment breakdowns in the production plant. After seeing the printing

presses, we toured the part of the plant used for assembling the advertising section of the

Sunday paper. The advertisements are printed elsewhere before being delivered to Star

Tribune. The assembly process was highly automated.

After the tour, a group of event attendees socialized at Bunkers Bar and Grill and discussed what

we enjoyed about the tour. Overall, the event was a success, and we are looking forward to

more exciting tours this year!

What is IISE?

IISE is the world’s largest professional society dedicated solely to the support of the industrial engineering

profession and individuals involved with improving quality and productivity. Founded in 1948, IISE is an international, non-profit association that provides leadership for the application, education, training,

research and development of industrial engineering.

With approximately 15,000 members and 280 chapters worldwide, IISE’s primary mission is to meet the ever-changing needs of industrial engineers, which includes

undergraduate and graduate students, engineering practitioners and consultants in all industries,

engineering managers, and engineers in education, research and government.

What is IISE Twin Cities?

The IISE Twin Cities Chapter 38 provides a network for individuals within Minnesota and surrounding areas to

collaborate about industrial engineering. Our members include professionals with industrial engineering degrees, both working in IE and non-IE roles and

professionals working in IE related functions.

We provide monthly events which include topics in professional development, Lean, Six Sigma, Quality,

process improvement and tours at distribution centers, manufacturing facilities, hospitals and consulting firms. We also promote the industrial engineering profession by providing scholarships to IE students and becoming

involved with several student IISE chapters.

Upcoming Events In April, 35 people attended the IISE

tour of Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

The tour consisted of and overview of

the engineering structure at Mayo

Clinic and several presentations of examples of projects that the engineers at

Mayo Clinic have recently performed. After the presentations, the participants

were toured through some of the main areas of Gonda Building, one of the floors

that has been optimized for patient flow, the original Mayo Clinic building and the

Mayo Clinic museum.

you for your participation an

Mayo Clinic Tour, April 2016

Participants learned that IEs at Mayo

work as consultants to departments

working on projects or full time in

areas that need full time help.

Typical tools used by the IEs at Mayo

are: process mapping, Pareto

analysis, data analytics, PDSA cycles

of improvement and project

management tools. One project looked at level loading the patient/nursing interaction

for a chemotherapy unit, where simulation was used to try various solutions. Another

project standardized a medical procedure amongst different surgeons which resulted

in a .8 day decrease in patient stay, 8-10% decrease in cost, and reduced infection

rate. This project provided model for other surgical types to do the same. At Mayo

Clinic, projects are tracked for 3-4 years after completion to ensure continued

performance (cost savings).

The event ended with a social gathering at Dooley’s pub in downtown Rochester.

This tour drew many new people to our organization, if you attended the event as

someone who was new to IISE Twin Cities; we thank you for your participation and

hope that you join us again.
