Our goal at Urban Eclectic is to change the female perception of who she is and what she must do as a woman in this century. We want her to know how

impotant she is, right in her community by simply being a mother, daughter, friend,

sister, aunt. cousin or wife. All she must do is be calm, know herself and have handy

resources at all times.

greetings from the Editor

Ahhh, Fall!... With all the hustle of the holidays and back to

school action, we want everyone to sit and relax for the introduction of the Urban Ladies League (the Urbs) and the fun to come here at URB. This is more than a magazine, it is a resource guide for the modern Lady. The Urbs are here to share anything that we would share with any of our family, friends, or neighbors. There is a radio show, events, workshops and even services. We want everyone to know us like family before the premiere issue arrives. So, this autumn everything will be sponsored by

The family blog… At The Table.

Mother NatureA long time ago, if you had asked me if I liked Nature in Autumn, I

would have said no, because Autumn is the season when all the

trees and flowers die and are pretty much dormant until Spring comes again. However, now I've

come to love seeing little red and orange leaves everywhere, it's so pretty. In addition to that, I think

that it's poetic in a way. Life ends so that in another season

new life can begin. ~ Angie Jones Chicago, IL

Family values are a little like family vacations - subject to changeable

weather and remembered more fondly with the passage of time. Though it rained all week at the beach, its often the momentary

rainbows that we remember. ~ Leslie Dreyfous

Say Good-Bye To Dry

When cold weather hits, use these ultra moisturizing

tips to fight the itch

By Stacey Colino

—drying conditions ahead.

The main culprits are cold air, which holds less

moisture than warm air, and low humidity and central

heating, which make already dry air even drier. But

winter and cold weather also hits harder as you get

older, partly because of changes in your body over

which you have little control.

The result: Your skin becomes rough, flaky, and itchy

and your eyes, red and irritated. It's not just a matter

of comfort or appearance. Dryness can also leave you

vulnerable to a host of potentially dangerous

infections and injuries (such as scratched corneas) and

exacerbate existing problems (like eczema and

psoriasis). These simple skin care beauty tips for

soothing skin, eyes, and hair can help you survive the

cold weather season.

Embrace Your Inner Child

What We Can Learn From ChildrenBy Sandra Magsamen

U.L.M. | embrace

Page 22: URB Magazine Fall 2014

We are all born with the gifts of creativity, imagination, play, exploration and curiosity. Children act on these valuable attributes freely, discovering happiness, belonging, connection and community through them.

Playing, imagining and curiosity served you well in childhood and can again be renewed to enhance your quality of life, well-being and, ultimately, your happiness as an adult.

"We are intended to remain in many ways childlike," anthropologist Ashley Montagu once wrote. "We were never intended to grow up into the kind of adults most of us have become. We are designed ... to grow and develop in ways that emphasize rather than minimize childlike traits."

● Are you in touch with your inner child? Take this quiz!● Sandra's 6 ways to embrace your youthfulness

It's no surprise that a UCLA study documented what we already assumed: On average, at age 5 we engage in creative tasks 98 times a day, laugh 113 times and ask 65 questions. By age 44, the numbers fade to two creative tasks a day, 11 laughs and six questions.

I want you to decide to reverse the slide in these numbers in your daily life. A good place to start is by asking questions. Questions will lead you to use your curiosity, rethink what you're doing and find new ideas. And asking questions won't take a lot of time—you can ask yourself questions wherever you are: in the shower, at breakfast, driving your car or commuting home on the subway, bus or train.

Ask yourself: ● Is this the way I want to do this, or is there a different way?● Is the fastest way always the best way?● What's my purpose in doing what I want to do? What's the message I want to send?● Am I wanting to make someone smile or give a helping hand?● What rule am I observing by doing what I'm doing?

Do you feel like your social life has taken a hit while you’re climbing the corporate ladder or maybe just focusing on family? In

general, every time we’re overwhelmed with work, school, and families, the first thing we cut to make more time is our friendships

with other women. We put those friendships on the back burner, and after failing to nurture them, we start losing those relationships.

If this rings true, you are not alone. A survey taken by the University of Chicago discovered that Americans have a third fewer

close friends and confidants than two decades ago.Back in 1985, Americans believed they had three people in whom they could

confide personal matters, and in 2004 that number had dropped down to just two.

Even with Facebook, Twitter, and all the forms of social media out there, this evidence points to people living lonelier and more

isolated than in the past. Feelings of isolation can lead to depression, anxiety, and even health problems. The easiest solution is

nurturing your friendships, hence, the importance of girl talk.

In the spirit of girl talk, we created the GirlsGuideTo TV series, which launches tomorrow. Each week you'll get a serious dose of girl

bonding time, starting with tomorrow's show all about, you guessed it -- friendship. Because it it so important, we thought we'd give

you some of the benefits of girl talk and creating lasting female friendships a day early. They just may surprise you!

You Will Live a Longer and Healthier Life

For starters, do you remember the standby stress response, “fight or flight?” Well, researchers discovered it doesn’t actually hold true

for women. Instead, we have a “tend and befriend” reaction in stressful situations..

Clean like a maid!

By: Badbadivy

The mantra of the company I worked for

was top to bottom, left to right. This way

you could easily walk into any room and

know exactly where to get started. The work

was divided into"wet rooms" (bathrooms and

kitchens) and "dry rooms" (living room, dining

room, bedrooms). If we were lucky and

weren't understaffed, we'd go out with a

partner and one person would do the "wet

rooms" and the other person would do the

"dry rooms". One "wet room" and one "dry

room" would be "deep cleaned" each cleaning.

Ingredients3 1/2 cups canned low-salt chicken broth3 tablespoons unsalted butter1 cup finely chopped onion2 garlic cloves, minced1 cup arborio rice, or medium-grain white rice1/2 cup dry red wine1/3 cup frozen peas, defrosted, optional1/4 cup chopped fresh Italian parsley leaves1/2 cup grated Parmesan, plus additional for garnishSalt and freshly ground black pepperDirectionsBring the broth to a simmer over medium-high heat. Cover the broth and keep it warm over very low heat.

Melt the butter in a heavy large saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and saute until translucent, about 8 minutes. Stir in the garlic and saute for 30 seconds. Stir in the rice and cook for about 2 minutes until the rice is toasted. Add the wine and stir until it is absorbed, about 1 minute. Add 3/4 cup of hot broth; simmer over medium-low heat until the liquid is absorbed, stirring often, about 6 minutes. Repeat, adding 3/4 cup of hot broth 2 more times, stirring often, about 12 minutes longer. At this point, the risotto can be made 4 hours ahead. Refrigerate the risotto (the rice will still be firm) and remaining broth, uncovered, until cool, then cover and keep them refrigerated until ready to proceed.

Bring the remaining broth to a simmer, then cover and keep it warm over very low heat. Stir 3/4 cup of hot broth into the partially cooked risotto over medium heat until the broth is absorbed and the risotto is hot, about 3 minutes. Add the remaining broth and simmer until the rice is just tender and the mixture is creamy, about 5 minutes longer. Stir in the peas and parsley. Add the 1/2 cup of Parmesan. Season, to taste, with salt and pepper. Spoon the risotto into bowls. Sprinkle additional cheese over and serve.

Sunny's Easy Holiday Spiral Ham

Recipe courtesy Sunny AndersonIngredients

1/2 cup dark brown sugar

1/4 cup honey

Zest and juice of 1 orange

2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice

6 to 8 scrapes of fresh nutmeg, using a rasp

1 (6 to 7-pound) bone-in half spiral ham

10 to 12 sprigs fresh thyme

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Directions

Heat the oven to 325 degrees F.

In a bowl, mix together the brown sugar, honey, orange zest, 1/4 cup orange juice, pumpkin pie spice, and nutmeg.

Season with salt.

Roll out enough aluminum foil to surround the ham and place the ham in the center of the foil. Peel back the

layers of the ham and place a sprig of thyme between every other layer of the spirals. Pour half of the

glaze over the ham allowing it to sink into the slices. Tightly wrap the ham in the foil and place on a rack in a

roasting pan. Fill the pan with an inch of water and roast in the oven until the internal temperature reaches

140 degrees F, about 20 minutes per pound.

Pour the remaining half of the glaze in a small saucepot on medium heat and bring to a simmer. Whisk until

small bubbles appear all over, then turn off the heat. The glaze will thicken as it rests.

Raise the oven temperature to 400 degrees F.

Remove the ham from the oven. Using caution and tongs to help, peel back the aluminum foil from the top,

leaving the aluminum foil on the sides and underneath the ham to catch the glaze and juices. Slather the

remaining glaze all over the top of the ham and place back in the oven uncovered for 15 more minutes. Remove

and let rest before slicing. Read more

The Pantry is the result of doing a few favors

in college. A couple of friends started off

helping each other out by "taking everyone's

only one car. After getting married and

becoming parents, they began to do the same

After a while it was noticeable that everyone
