About UT Arlington Men’s Basketball• UT Arlington is 1-2 on the season after dropping
an 85-72 decision at Florida Gulf Coast University on Wednesday, Nov. 16 in Fort Myers, Fla. UTA owned a 16-point lead just before half, but a definitive second half scoring run by FGCU sealed the outcome.
• Junior forward Kevin Hervey led three UTA players in double figures with 13 points to go with a team-high five rebounds. Jalen Jones (11) and Drew Charles (10) also scored in double-figures. Erick Neal added a game-high seven assists.
• In UTA’s season-opening victory over Texas Souther, Jones fell just one point shy of his career high with a team-high 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting (3-6 from 3pt). Junior Kaelon Wilson equaled a program record by shooting 8-for-8 from the field en route to 19 points.
• Against TSU, junior forward Kevin Hervey made his first appearance after missing 19 games last season due to a knee injury. He played 21 minutes off the bench and registered a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. He shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
• UT Arlington is in its 58th season of men’s basketball. The Mavericks were a member of the Southland Conference for 38 years (1964-2012), spent one season in the Western Athletic Conference (2012-13) and are currently in their fourth season in the Sun Belt Conference.
• UT Arlington was selected as the favorite to win the Sun Belt Conference regular-season title in a preseason poll of league coaches. The Mavericks received 10 of a possible 12 first place votes.
• Junior forward Kevin Hervey and guard Erick Neal were selected first team preseason all-Sun Belt honorees by league coaches. Hervey was named the conference’s preseason player of the year.
• UTA is led by 11th year head coach Scott Cross. The 1998 UTA graduate brings a 178-140 (.560) record into the opener at Minnesota. His win total is the second-highest in program history.
• UT Arlington returns all five starters (six including Kevin Hervey) and 10 letterwinners from last year’s team. The Mavericks also return 87 percent of its scoring and 86 percent of its rebounding from a year ago.
• The Mavericks are scheduled to play 9 of their 13 non conference games on the road against teams from 8 different athletic conferences. The combined travel distance for the 9 trips will total 13,021 miles, according to Google Maps.
Series Against Arkansas• UT Arlington is 0-6 against Arkansas since the
first meeting between the two programs in 1965.
• The last time the two teams played, on Dec. 31, 2010, resulted in an 87-74 UA victory in Fayetteville.
• In that 2010 game, UTA owned a 33-25 lead with 2:47 left in the first half. But, Arkansas went on a 12-1 run to claim a halftime lead it would never relinquish.
• Five of the six previous meetings took place in Fayetteville. One was played in Little Rock (1968) and the one was played in Arlington (1969).
• UTA and Arkansas have played just twice since 1969 (1999 & 2010).

Sports = A Famly Affair For CrossGrowing up, Scott Cross was a multi-spot athlete at North Garland High School. Along with his older brother, current UTEP women’s soccer coach Kevin, the two were immersed in sports from an early age. “We were competitive in everything. Pingpong. Playing basketball. Soccer. Playing 21 in the drive-way. We made each other better.” Both kids excelled at soccer, earning spots on elite club and regional all-star teams. Scott, howev-er, fell in love with basketball and became a college player and coach. Kevin played college soccer at Austin College before entering coaching. Both earned master’s degrees after college. Keeping sports in the families Scott married the former Jennifer Harris, a former UTA volleyball player from 1995-98, while Kevin’s wife, Carrie, was a high school girls soccer coach.

A Few Things You Might Not Know• Junior forward Kevin Hervey’s cousin, Lencola
Sullivan, won the 1980 Miss Arkansas title and became the first African-American woman to win a preliminary award and to place among the top 5 in the Miss America pageant.
• UTA will play 9 of their 13 non-conference games against teams from 8 different athletic conferences. The combined travel distance for the 9 trips will total 13,021 miles, according to Google maps.
• Junior point guard Erick Neal’s twin brother, Derrick, plays cornerback for the University of Kansas football team. Derrick was born 14 minutes before Erick. The duo committed to play basketball at UTA, but Derrick changed his mind and decided to play football. As a backcourt pair in on the AAU circuit, the brothers were nicknamed “Backcourt Problem” because they were so difficult to defend.
• This fall, senior forward Jorge Bilbao was fea-tured as one of 10 influential Hispanic student leaders at UTA by the student newspaper – The Shorthorn. The Bilbao, Spain native is a double major in international business and marketing.
• Freshman forward Erkam Kiris expected to play for his native Turkey in the U18 Europe-an Championships last summer in Istanbul. However, political unrest in the country, which included a failed coup attempt, postponed the championships and caused some concern that Kiris might not be able to leave the country to attend college. After an exhaustive effort, he finally was able to travel to Arlington. Despite missing the team’s summer workouts, he played catch-up and used the preseason to acclimate to the program’s culture and transition to the pace of college. For more, visit UTAMavs.com.
Adversity Creates OpportunityAfter Kevin Hervey went down to a season-end-ing knee injury last season, many expected the Mavericks to quickly go into a downward slide. After all, he averaged team-highs of 18.1 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. However, Coach Scott Cross and Hervey give credit to the entire team for becoming a tighter unit through the adversity. After dropping four straight games, the team rebounded by going 10-4 down the stretch.
Stepping UpAfter leading scorer and rebounder Kevin Hervey went down with a knee injury prior to the team’s 17th game last season, several players increased their scoring and rebounding averages in his absence. During the final 19 games, Kaelon Wilson (a 6’-2” guard) registered nine double-figure scoring games and four games of 10 rebounds or more. Jalen Jones scored in double-figures 14 times in the and (also 6’-2”) surpassed 10 rebounds in four of the team’s final five games. 1st 16 last 17Player ppg rpg ppg rpgKaelon Wilson 8.4 3.3 11.5 6.6Jalen Jones 11.0 4.7 *14.1 5.6Jorge Bilbao 6.2 6.7 7.4 *7.4*led team

The arena features 4,055 lower bowl seats, in addition to a 2,800-square-foot hospitality suite. A distinctive feature is a center hung 4-sided Daktronics LED scoreboard with an additional end zone LED display, ribbon displays and scorer’s table. The lower concourse contains sports medicine facilities, two full-sized practice courts, a 2,500-sq-ft weight room, a press center, an academic support study center and coaches’ office suites. In addition to Mavericks basketball and volleyball events, the facility hosts a variety of concerts, speaking engagements and other events.
