The Yellowjackets enter with a 4-2 record on the year, while Dixie State enters with a 5-1 mark. GAME THEME AND SPONSOR Tonight’s game theme is Santa Claus Night as Santa will be making an appearance at Alterowitz Gymnasium. The first 30 children will have the opportunity to have a picture with Santa for free while the cost will be $3 after. Tonight’s game sponsor is Montana Tobacco Awareness and Preven- tion. The Yellowjackets thank them for their support. MAGIC NUMBER FOR 1,000TH VICTORY The magic number for the 1,000th victory is three. MSUB is 997-889 all-time for a .529 winning percentage. If the Yellowjackets with the next three, the 1,000th victory would come as early as the Jan. 2 game versus the University of Great Falls at home. SCOUTING MONTANA STATE BILLINGS Leading the way for the Yellowjackets this season is DeAndre Chambers who leads the team averaging 13.8 points. He leads the team with 32 made field goals and 13 made 3-pointers. Second on the team in scoring is Derrick Wright who is averaging 11.7 points per game. Wright is shooting a team-best .575 from the field on 23 of 40. He also leads the team with 23 made free throws (23 of 32). Wright also leads the team in rebounding at a 5.5 average and leads the team with four blocks. Lasha Parghalava has come on as of late and is tied for third on the team in scoring at 11.2 points per game with Brad Hodge. Parghalava is second in triples with 11 and third in made field goals with 25. DaVell Jackson is averaging 9.7 points and leads the team with 35 assists and 19 steals. He almost has a 2:1 ratio in assists to turnovers (35:18). As a team, the Yellowjackets are shooting 48 percent from the field on 159 of 331. The Jackets are 36 of 89 from downtown for 40 percent and are 95 of 135 from the line after a slow start for 70 percent. MSUB is rebounding 34.2 rebounds per game and scoring 74.8 points per game. Conversely, the Jackets are holding opponents to 44 percent from the

Muchcouldbesaidaboutateamthatreboundsfroma1-28finishin2007-08toa10-17overallthe

followingseason,andthat’sjustwhattheMontanaStateUniversityBillings2008-09men’sbasketballteamaccomplished.ThisamazingturnaroundintheinauguralyearofheadcoachGeorgePfeifer’sdirectiondefinitelyexceededexpectations.AsPfe-iferbeginshissecondseasonatthehelmoftheYellowjackets,hecombinesacoreofsixexperienced,veteranplayersandtentalentednewcomers—creatinganewlookforthe‘Jackets.Allonboardarededi-catedtocontinuingthemomentumtowardadvancementintheverycompetitiveGreatNorthwestAthleticConference. “LastyeartheJacketswereexpectedtoplaceatthebottomoftheconference,”Pfeifersaid.“Instead,withtremendousplayereffortandimprovement,theyplacedinthemiddleofoneoftheeliteNCAADivisionIIconferencesinthecountry.Theeffortthoseplayersputforthtookusfromaplacewhereitwasn’tuncommontodropgamesbyanaverageof27points,toapointwheretenoflastseason’slosseswerebyfivepointsorlessandhingedonthebounceoftheball.” Thistremendousimprovementbodeswellforthecomingseasonandthe‘Jack-ets’abilitytokeeptheenergygoing,de-spitethelossofsomekeyscoringpower. “We’velost40pointsfromtherosterwiththelossofsomeofourscorers,includingstandoutsMikeHallandTravisBunker,”Pfeifersaid.Thegrouplast

Threefirstyearplayerswillroundoutthisyear’sroster.Atpost,lookforAndrewHickman(6’7,250lb.)fromWoodward,Oklahoma.whileFreshmenJoelBarndt(6’8,185lb.)comesinfromBillingsCentralHighSchoolandRobTrabing(6’3,190lb.),fromBuffalo,Wyomingcomesinatguard.Intime,Hickmanisexpectedtobringmuchneededsizeandgirthtotheprogram,whileBarndt,whowillredshirtthisseason,isexpectedtobecomeamain-stayinthefutureoftheprogram. “Ilikethegroupofathleteswe’vebroughtin,”Pfeifersaid.“Wehaveaddedsomedecentpiecestothepuzzle.Thekeytooursuccesswillbeingettingeveryonetolearnhisrespectiverollandtherollofeachteammember.Ourdepth,whichwasanissuelastyear,ismuchimprovedthisseason.”Theschedulewillonceagainbechal-lengingandthepreseasonpollshavethe‘JacketspickedfifthintheGNAC.ThegoalwillbetocontinuethemomentumandfurtheradvancetheprogramintheGNAC.“Ourleaguewillonceagainbeoneofthetoughestinthecountry,”Pfeifersaid.“Ifyoushowupwithoutyour‘A’game,chancesforsuccessarenotgreat.Ilikethisteamandbelieveinwhatitcanbecome.Wehaveguyswhoreallyliketoplay,practiceandhavebeenveryexciting.”

TheYellowjacketshaveenjoyedmanysuccessesduringthe82yearssincetheprogram’sinceptionin1927.TheseincludenineNCAADivisionIITournamentappearances,oneNCAA

FinalFourappearance,11NAIANationalTournamentappearances,16NAIADistrictTournamentfinishesandatotalof22conferencechampionshipsinfourdifferentconferences.MSUBisnowinitsthirdyearinitsfifthconference,theGreatNorthwestAthleticConference. WiththeYellowjacketsonlysevenwinsawayfromtheir1,000thvictory,thetraditionofexcellencecontinuesastheycloseinonthismilestoneforthe2009-10season.Duringthehistoryoftheprogram,theYellowjacketshavetallied993winsinschoolhistorytojust876lossesfora.531all-timewinningpercentage.MSUBhashad43winningseasonsand19seasonsofwinning20ormoregames. Themen’sbasketballprogramisthelongest-runningintercol-legiateathleticprogramatMontanaStateUniversityBillings.StartedwhentheUniversitywasknownasEasternMontanaCol-lege,men’sbasketballhasfieldedateameveryyearexceptduringWorldWarII. Havinghadonly13headcoachessince1927,stabilityhasbeenahallmarkofthemen’sbasketballprogram.Recognitionisstillgiventodaytosomeofthecoachingstalwartsofthepastinthenamingoffacilitiesandthebustsdisplayedinthefoyerofthegymnasium.Thefieldbehindthegymnasiumbearsthenameoftheschool’sfirstbasketballcoach,OscarBjorgum,whilethegymnasiumitselfisnamedinhonorofCoachHaroldAlterowitz.AbustinthelikenessofMikeHarkins,themostsuccessfulcoachintheprogram’shistory,isamongthosefeaturedinthefoyeroftheAlterowitzGym. Men’sbasketballwasledbyonlyfourcoachesintheyearsbe-tween1927and1960:Bjorgum,Alterowitz,WaltZimmermanandAllenFeldner.Althoughtheprogramlaunchedonlytwowinningcampaignsduringitsfirst30years,thedrivetonationalpromi-nencebeganinearnestwiththearrivalofCoachHarkinsinthe1960-61campaign.Thishalloffamecoachspent16yearsleading

theYellowjackets,winningaschoolrecord288games,adozenconferencechampionshipsandqualifyingfor10NAIAnationaltournaments.

DuringHarkins’ten-ure,hewent16-5inhisfirstseasonguid-ingtheYellowjacketstoasecondplacefin-ishintheconference.A19-9recordhissecond year earned the‘JacketsaberthintheNAIADistrictTournament.Harkins

wouldmakehisfirstNAIANationalTournamentappearancein1962-63withanunblemished10-0conferencerecordanda19-6mark.From1961-1965,HarkinsandtheYellowjacketswentanastonishing39-1inconferenceplaywiththreeseasonsofperfect10-0records.HewouldleadtheYellowjacketstosixconsecutivewinningseasonsinhisfirstsixyears. Harkinssawhisfirst20-winseasonin1967-68astheteamwent20-9withaFrontierConferencechampionshipandearnedaberthintheNAIANationalTournament.Hewouldgoontowin20gamesormore,fivemoretimes.

AnativeofAkron,Ohio,Harkinsknewhowtorecruit,coach-ing59all-conferenceperformersand22NAIAall-Americans.AmongthenotableshecoachedwasRoyMcPipe(1971-74),theall-timeleadingscorerinschoolhistorywith1,883careerpoints.HealsocoachedJimSoft(1964-68),whoholdstheall-timeleadinreboundswith1,338.InadditiontoMcPipeandSoft,HarkinscoachedsuchstandoutsasBillDrumm(1961-63),HarveyMumford(1963-64),JoeRinella(1960-64),KasIoane(1971-73)andTomOsborne(1974-77),tonameafew. WiththeconclusionoftheHarkinserain1976,EldenKamlaandDickEdwardscoachedtheteamforacombinedfiveyears,continuingtobuildupontheHarkinstradition.Kamlalefttheprogramin1978andEdwardsusheredinthetransitionfromNAIAtoNCAADivisionII. CoachPatDouglassfollowedEdwardsin1981,leadingthe‘Jacketsto135victoriesinsevenseasons.WithDouglasatthehelm,theYellowjacketsexecutedoneofthemostsuccessfulseasonsinschoolhistoryin1986-87inwhatwastobetheschool’sfirstNCAADivisionIIFinalFour. Ontheroadtothatmilestone,the‘Jacketswent24-7,recordingthemostwinsinaseasoninschoolhistory.Thejourneyincludedgoing9-1inleagueplayanddefeatingCalState–Hayward(78-54)andAlaskaAnchorage(79-73)towintheNCAADivisionIIWestRegion. TheYellowjackets’tickettotheFinalFourwasassuredwiththeirvictoryoverFloridaSouthernUniversityintheNCAADivisionIIquarterfinals(75-62).DespiteGannonUniversitybestingtheYellowjackets61-55attheFinalFour,theseasonconcludedasoneofthemostmemorableinschoolhistory. Overthenextsevenyears,LenWilkins(1987-88),ErnieWheeler(1988-91)andGaryBays(1991-95)continuedthetradi-tionforgedbytheirpredecessors.ItwasalsoduringthistimethatEasternMontanaCollegebecameMontanaStateUniversityBillingsin1994.TheYellowjacketsgarneredfourwinningseasonsandtwo20-winseasonsunderWheeler’sdirection. In1995,CoachCraigCarsetookovertheprogram,recordingfive20-winseasonsand10winningseasonsinhis13-yeartenure.With211wins,heholdssecondplaceinwinsintheschool’scoachinghistory. a1-28and6-22programovertheprevioustwoyearsandnotonlygettingtheprogramcompetitive,butwinning. PfeifercomestoMSUBafterthreeyearsattheUniver-sityofIdahowhereheinheritedaprogramthatwasinlastplaceandpredictedbyeverymediaandcoachespolltofinishlast.Intheendtheyprovedthosepredictionswrong,finishinginthemiddleoftheWesternAthleticCon-ferenceandwinningthreeoftheirlastfiveleaguegamestogivetheprogramitshighestfinishintheWACatthattime. PriortoIdaho,PfeiferhadaverysuccessfultenureatLewis-ClarkStateCollegewherehewastheheadmen’scoachfrom1989-2005andtheassistantcoachfrom1987-1989.Hegainedhis200thcareerwinastheWarrior’sheadcoachin2001-02.Hethensettheschoolrecordforcoachingcareerwinswith213victoriesina105-79winovertheUniversityofGreatFalls,whilegarnering294careerwinsathisalmamater.Duringhistenure,hebuiltL-CintooneofthestrongestprogramsinthePacificNorthwestandledtheWarriorstonationalprominence.
