Phil George1965-1978171-165 (.509)

One of the most highly respected coaches in the state, Phil George coached at Angelo State from 1949 until 1978. In his 28 seasons, he coached the Rams to more than 500 career victories and guided the team through the transition to NCAA Division II play in 1964. While ASU’s coach, George was named conference coach of the year 12 times and national coach of the year in 1957 after guiding the Rams to the NJCAA National Championship. In his entire ASU career, George’s teams posted a record of 512-274. He also served as ASU’s Athletic Director from 1968 until his retirement from the university in 1986. George was inducted into the LSC Hall of Honor in 1996.

Ed Messbarger1978-1998267-286 (.483)

A legend in the coaching profession, Ed Messbarger guided the Rams for 20 seasons. At his retirement, Messbarger, who has a career coaching record of 665-515, ranked third in Division II in career wins and was second in all-time coaching appearances among coaches at any level of play. He guided ASU to two Lone Star Conference titles and was named LSC Coach of the Year in 1984 and 1988. He is a member of the Hall of Fame of the NAIA, St. Mary’s and Northwest Missouri State. Messbarger was inducted into the Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor in 2006. He was inducted into the Angelo State Hall of Honor in 2012.

Joe Esposito1998-2006118-103 (.534)

Esposito immediately led ASU to thefirstwinningrecordinfouryearsandone of the best starts in the history of the program at 11-3. He led the Rams to back-to-back-to-back LSC Tournament appearances and an LSC South Division title and NCAA Tournament appearance forthefirsttimein10yearsin2001.Inhisfirstfouryears,hepostedthreeofthetop season win records in school history and posted winning seasons in each of hisfirstfiveyears.

Rike helped guide ASU to the NCAA DII Tournament after inheriting a program that was winless in Lone Star Conference South Division play the year prior to his arrival. In 2010-2011, he led the Rams to a third consecutive LSC tournament appearance, a year after leading the Rams to the team’s firstNCAADivisionIITournamentsince2002. In 2008-09, the Rams also posted a20-winseasonforthefirsttimeineightyears.

InhisfirstseasonasheadcoachBoonecontinuedtheprogram’ssuccessfromthepreviousyearasheledtheRamsbacktotheNCAADIIRegionalfinalandfinishedwitha 25-7 overall record. During the 2015-16 season, He led the Rams to the best start in program history opening the season with a 12-0 record. This included the upset of several nationally ranked teams.

BonnealsoguidedtheteambacktotheLoneStarConferncetournamanetfinalsfor the second consecutive year. The Rams defeated Texas A&M - Kingsville and Tarleton State before falling to nationally ranked Midwestern State. The Rams were then earned a spot in the team’s second consecutive NCAA DII Regional Tournament where it would down Arkansas - Fort Smith and Ft. Lewis before falling short agaisnt Tarleton State.

Boone has returned all but three members of the 2015-16 team and has brought in several top recruits. This has led the Rams to being selected as the No. 5 team in the nation by the Sporting News 2016-17 Preseason Poll.

LAMARSHALL CORBETT2010 NCAA Division II All-American

LaMarshall Corbett became the second player in Angelo State history to earn All-American status as he was named to the Daktronics All-America Second Team following the 2009-10 campaign. Corbett was the leading scorer in the LSC and South Central region averaging 23.4 pointspergame.Hefinishedsecondintheregioninfree-throwpercentage,converting90.6 percent of his attempts, and three-point percentage as he connected on 47.6 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc. Corbett’s 656 points that season was the third-highest total in school history and his free-throw percentage marked only the second time ever that a Ram had converted over 90 percent of his attempts.

2014 NCAA Division II All-South Central

The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) honored Angelo State senior Kenny Williams by naming him to the 2014 South Central First Team following a season where he recorded 10 double-doubles and led the Lone Star Conference in scoring. Williams, a 6-foot-7 forward from St. Louis, was one of 88 Division II players selected by member coaches of the NABC after he scored in double digits in 26 of 28 games played andfinishedwithaleague-leading17.2pointspergame.HehasalsobeennamedtotheDaktronicsAll-SouthCentralfirstteamandtotheLoneStarConferencefirstteam.Inhisfirst,and only, season at ASU after transferring from McMurry, he also earned the LSC Newcomer oftheYearhonorafterfinishingtheregularseasonasitsscoringleaderandsecondinrebounding with 8.0 rebounds per game.

2016 NCAA Division II All-South Central The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) honored Angelo State senior Tre Bennett by naming him to the 2016 South Central First Team.Bennett,a5-foot-10guardfromHouston,Texasledtheteaminpointsandfinishedamongthe leaders in the conference with 17.0 points per game. In his lone season at Angelo State, Bennettshotateamsecond.451percentfromthefieldand.376frombeyondthearc,whileleading the Rams with a .872 percent from the charity stripe. The Indiana State transfer capped hisyearoffscoringdoublefigurepointsin23consecutivegames.Healsoledinballdistribu-tion, as he averaged 5.0 assists per competition. Defensively, he tallied a team high 43 steals on the season and grabbed 87 total boards. Bennett earned honors as the 2015-16 Lone Star Conference Newcomer of the Year and as anAll-Conferencefirstteamselection,andanLSCAll-Tournamentselection.
