1 Introduction

The Vectis iX NVS Manager is the software to serve a standalone PC to deliver

basic and advanced security surveillance such as high-performance video live-view

and video playback, the advanced IVA such as MVP, e-fences, object search, and

so on. The software also features POS integration to combine surveillance with

chain-store retails. Powerful alarm features are also included.

The Vectis iX CMS Manager on the other hand delivers the enterprise-level

security surveillance for you. It is the software to remotely control all the networked

NVRs to access and manage their NVS features as mentioned above. The

software supports up to 600 channels and therefore is suitable for the large-scale

projects such as government buildings, campuses, hotels, shopping malls, etc.

1.1 About this Document

A computer (system) needs to meet some requirements to run the software well.

This section will enumerate both the hardware requirements and the software

requirements in the following sections:

6.2 Software Requirements

The software needs Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ) to run. The MSMQ is a

messaging protocol that ensures messages can be sent and received reliably

across networks and between computers. In case the computer doesn’t have the

MSMQ installed, follow the guide below to install the MSMQ.

To install the MSMQ:

1. In Windows, click Start button | Control Panel | Programs | Programs and

Features | Turn Windows features on or off.

In Windows, click Start button | Control Panel | Programs and Features |

Turn Windows features on or off.

A Windows Features window opens.

2. Select all MSMQ features.

3. Click the OK button.

4. Follow the onscreen instructions to proceed.

7 Install

This section will guide you to install the software. Before you start, pay attention to

the system requirement as described in 6 System Requirements. When the system

requirements are fulfilled, proceed to install the software as described in one of the

following sections, depending on which product you have purchased:

To install the software:

1. From the product CD, find the install program, which is an executable file.

Double-click the file.

The install wizard opens onscreen.

2. Click the Next button to proceed.

A license agreement window opens.

3. Select I accept the terms in the License Agreement and click the Next but-

ton to proceed.

The install wizard then prompts the minimum hardware requirements.

4. Click the Next button to proceed when all hardware requirements are met.

The install wizard then prompts the minimum software requirements.


The install wizard then prompts Install Path Selection.

6. Select which drive to install the software to and then click the Install button.

The wizard will auto-create a “Vanderbilt” directory to the selected drive. The

software also requires DirectX runtime, Windows Installer 3.1, Virtual C++

(VC100), and .NET Framework to run. The wizard will auto-install them if they

are not installed yet. It takes a while to install the software.

7. During the installation, the install wizard will prompt you to install MSMQ if it

isn’t installed in the system. Click OK to close the prompt. Remember to in-

stall the component as described in 6.2 Software Requirements.

Then a readme file opens to call your attentions to some storage volume is-

sues.

8. Close the readme file after reading through..

The install wizard then prompts to restart the system to finish the installation.

9. Select Reboot now and click the Finish button.

The system then auto-restarts to apply the changes.

10. Proceed to launch and activate the software as described in 8 First Launch

and Activate.

7.2 Install CMS Manager

To install the software:

1. From the product CD, find the install program, which is an executable file.

After the software is installed as described in 7 Install, proceed to launch and log in

to the software for the first time. When the software is launched for the first time,

the system auto-detects the authentication. When the authentication fails, use a

dongle key to activate the software.

This chapter will guide you to launch the software and activate the software by the

following sections:

first time as described in one of the following sections, depending on which product

you have purchased:

To launch the Vectis iX NVS Manager:

1. On Windows desktop, double-click the Vectis iX NVS Manager icon .

OR

In Windows, click the Start button | All Programs | Vanderbilt | Vectis iX

NVS | Vectis iX NVS Manager.

A Default Language Setting window opens.

2. Select the desired language and click OK.

A confirmation message ‘Are you sure you want to use XXX as the default

language?’ shows.

3. Click Yes to continue.

The system then detects the authentication. If the authentication fails, a Li-

cense Information window shows onscreen and prompts that a dongle key

is needed:

After the activation, a Logon window will open. (If Microsoft MSMQ is absent,

the software will prompt you to install it. Install MSMQ as described in 6.2

Software Requirements.)

5. Enter admin (the default) in the Username field and enter also admin (the

default) in the Password field. Then hit the Sign in button.

(If a physical keyboard isn’t available, click the icon to open an onscreen

keyboard for text input.)

The software then opens in Display Mode (the default mode).



8.1.2 Launch & Log in to CMS Manager

To launch the Vectis iX CMS Manager:

1. On Windows desktop, double-click the Vectis iX CMS Manager icon .

CMS | Vectis iX CMS Manager.

2. Select the desired language and click OK.

5. Click the button to manually add a NVR. The software will open an Add

NVR window.

Click the button to auto-search for the available NVR(s) in the network.

The software will prompt the search progress onscreen.

6. When the Add NVR window opens, enter the IP address of the NVR to add in

the IP / Domain Name field. Enter an alternate number in the Streaming

Port field and/or enter an alternate number in the Communication Port field

if you want to access the NVR by the Internet. In the Device Pack Port field,

enter the number of the port you are using to access the Device Pack. (The

default is 80.) Then click OK to proceed.

OR

When the software’s auto-search is through, the search results are displayed

on the Logon window. Select the NVR(s) to add.

Select the NVR to add.

Enter the IP address of the NVR to add.

Enter Device Pack port number. The default is 80.

Enter an alternate number if you want to access an NVR by the Internet.

8.2 Activate the Software

When the software is launched, the system auto-detects the authentication. If the

authentication fails, a License Information window shows onscreen and prompts

that a dongle key is needed:

Use a dongle key to activate the software. The dongle key is a hardware key with a

USB 2.0 adapter. To activate the software:

1. Plug the dongle key to one of the system’s USB ports.

It takes a while for the system to prepare the dongle key for use.

2. Click Retry on the License Information window to try again.

The software will open a Logon window if the authentication passes.

3. Log on to the software as described in 8.1 Launch & Log in.

9 Set up System

To bring the system up and running, this chapter will guide you to the necessary

system setup and system configuration by the following sections

9.1 Install HDD (for NVS Manager only)

This section and the subsections is applicable to Vectis iX NVS models only. If the

product you have purchased is one of the Vectis iX CMS models, skip this section.

Data recording is one of the most important parts for security surveillance, and a

hard disk drive is one of the most important components to safely store the

recording data. The software requires at least two hard disk drives to operate.

Follow the guides in this chapter to install the required hard disk drives.

9.1.1 HDD Requirement

It is always recommended to use the hard disks certified by Vanderbilt. Find the

certified hard disk list at:


Vanderbilt does not guarantee the system performance and system stability if a HDD model that is not certified by Vanderbilt is used.

9.1.2 Initialize HDD

The newly added hard disk drive(s) need to be initialized before a storage volume

can be created.

1. On the Windows desktop, right-click on the My Computer icon .

A context menu then opens.

2. From the context menu that opens, click Manage.

The Computer Management window then opens.

3. On the left pane of the Computer Management window is a Computer Man-

agement (Local) tree, double-click Storage.

4. From the drop-downs, click Disk Management.

The right pane then shows the local disk drives detected. A “non-Initialized”

HDD is displayed with a stop sign on it.

5. Right-click on a “non-Initialized” HDD.

7. Select the HDD(s) to initialize. Then hit the OK button.

For HDD capacity more than 2TB, select GPT instead of MBR for initialization.

Once the initialization is through, the selected HDD(s) become initialized and

the status changes to “Online”.

9.2 Configure Date, Time and Time Zone

Follow through the guide below to configure the system date, time and time zone.

1. In Windows O.S., click the Start button | Control Panel | Date and Time.

OR

In Windows O.S., click the Start button | Control Panel | Clock, Language,

and Region | Date and Time.

2. Click the Change time zone… button and set the time zone of your locale.

AND

Click the Change date and time… button and set the date and time of your

locale.

3. Reopen the Date and Time window. Click the Internet Time tab.

The Internet Time tabbed page opens.

4. Click the Change settings… button.

An Internet Time Settings window opens.

5. Click the down-arrow to open the Server list. Select the desired Internet

time server and then hit the Update Now button.

The operating system then proceeds to synchronize the system time with the

selected Internet time server.

6. Hit the OK button to save the change and quit the setting.

Internet connection must be available to synchronize with an Internet time server. However it isn’t recommended to do it since a system disabled from protection is liable to any harm by way of the Internet.

9.3 Configure Network

Follow through the guide below to configure the networking parameters such as IP

address and subnet mask.

1. In Windows, click the Start button | Control Panel | Network and Sharing Cen-

ter | Change adapter settings.

OR

In Windows, click the Start button | Control Panel | Network and Internet |

Network and Sharing Center | Change adapter settings.

A Network Connections window opens.

2. Right-click on the active connection.

A context menu opens.

4. From the properties sheet, click the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).

Then it becomes selected by a highlight.

5. Click the Properties button.

An Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties window opens.

6. On the General tabbed page, set the preferred IP address and the subnet

mask. Then press the OK button to finish and quit the setting.

Before conducting the network configuration, make sure the network environ-ment is ready. If the network is not available, contact your network administra-tor for further help.

9.4 Configure Screen Resolution

Follow through the guide below to configure the screen resolution:

x 1050 (the recommended).

10 Configure Software

The software is what the system relies on to deliver security surveillance. After the

system is set up as described in 9 Set up System, proceed to set the basic

parameters for the software to work, which will be detailed in the following sections:

10.1 Create Storage Volumes

10.2 Auto-add a Camera

10.3 Enable Motion Recording

10.1 Create Storage Volumes

This section is applicable to Vectis iX NVS models only. If the product you have

purchased is one of the Vectis iX CMS models, skip this section.

As long as a local HDD is initialized as described in 9.1.2 Initialize HDD, it can be

added to a storage volume. The system features the SCM (Storage Configuration

Manager) to get the job done. Follow through the guide below to create a volume

for the system’s storage.

1. On Windows desktop, double-click the SCM icon .

6. Click the Add to List button to add the volume into queue for formatting.

7. Click the Create button.

A Confirm window opens and shows the warning message “Create Volume

will reallocate your hard disk and you will lose current data on the disk. Are

you sure to keep doing these jobs?”

The selected hard disk(s) then become listed in the Hard Disk

The system then prompts the progress of creating a volume onscreen.

It takes a while to create a volume. When the creation is successfully through,

the progress prompt will close and the SCM will show “Create volume

successfully“ in its log box.

10.2 Auto-add a Camera

It relies on the software to add a camera to your network. This section will guide

you through the following tasks:

- to auto-add a camera to your network

- to enable the newly-added camera to record videos

- to allocate storage for the recorded videos

The following guide is presented mainly by the screenshots of Vectis iX NVS

Manager. However the operations in Vectis iX CMS Manager are similar or the

same if not otherwise stated.

Start to auto-add a camera:

1. Launch and log in to the software as described in 8.1 Launch & Log in.

The software opens.

2. On the software’s toolbar, find the four mode icons.

3. Click the icon.

The software then changes to Configuration Mode.

4. In Configuration Mode, find the left pane and click the Device tab.

5. For NVS Manager, click the plus-sign button on the camera device

tabbed page.

For CMS Manager, click the icon of the NVR to add a camera to and then

click the plus-sign button on the camera device tabbed page.

A window then opens and asks how you want to install a camera.

6. Click Auto Discovery.

An Auto Discovery window then opens.

7. Click the down-arrow at the Vendor box to open the drop-down list. Se-

lect a preferred vendor name from the list. Then hit the Search button.

An Authorization Input window then opens.

8. Enter the valid username and password for the vendor camera. Then hit the

OK button to proceed.

(Note both the username and the password are case-sensitive.)

The system then triggers the search for all the selected vendor’s IP cameras

within the network and shows the result in the Auto Discovery window.

9. Select the camera(s) to install and click the Import button.

The system then proceeds to import the selected camera(s). Once a camera

is imported, a Modify Camera Configuration page will be opened to allow

changes to the camera.

10. On the Modify Camera Configuration page, click the Recording Settings

tab.

The Recording Settings tabbed page then opens.

11. Hit the Assign Storage button.

An Assign Storage window opens.

12. Select the preferred volume and click the OK button.

The selected volume is assigned to the camera.

13. Click the OK button to finish and quit the setting.

10.3 Enable Motion Recording

“Motion Recording” means to trigger the recording once the camera detects

moving images. Follow the guide below to enable a camera to motion recording.

The following guide is presented mainly by the screenshots of Vectis iX NVS

Manager. However the operations in Vectis iX CMS Manager are similar or the

same if not otherwise stated.

1. Access the camera's profile webpage on your laptop or PC and enable the

camera's motion detection. (Don’t do this on the NVR system.)

2. Launch and log in to the software as described in 8.1 Launch & Log in.

The software opens in Display Mode by default.

3. On the software’s toolbar, find the four mode icons.

The software then changes to Configuration Mode.

5. In Configuration Mode, find the left pane and click the Device tab.

6. Click the plus sign (+) next to an NVR icon to expand the list of the imported

camera(s) thereof.

The imported camera list then opens.

7. Click the camera to enable motion recording for. Then click the edit button

.

8. On the Configuration page, click the Motion tab.

9. On the Motion tabbed page, enable the camera to receive motion detecting

events and configure the motion detecting features such as sensitivity, inter-

ested regions and so on.

10. Click the Recording Settings tab

The Recording Settings tabbed page opens.

11. On the Recording Settings tabbed page, find the Recording Schedule Set-

tings group and select Disable for the Rec Schedule setting.

12. Click the Alarm tab.

13. On the Alarm tabbed page, find the Motion On Alarm group settings. Select

Record.

The system will conduct self-check and self-maintenance by auto restarting it-self monthly at 3:00 AM at the 23rd.

11 Troubleshooting

Why can’t I successfully format a hard disk drive when I create a volume?

The hard disk might be broken so you must replace it with a new hard disk drive

and try to create the volume again as described in 10.1 Create Storage

Volumes on page 35.

When the OS file system is FAT32 and the software is installed in the same

drive as the OS then it will always fail to create a volume. Always change the

OS file system to NTFS or install the software in another partition other than the

OS partition then try to create the volume again.

Why does the software shows "0.0.0.0" for the system’s IP address?

There are two Ethernet adapter cards in the system but in default state the NVR

always uses the newly added one. Disable one of the cards and change the IP

setting if necessary then restart the NVR service and the software.

NVR’s Ethernet adapter card isn’t connected to the network switch. Connect the

Ethernet cable to the network switch and then restart the NVR service and the

software.

Why can’t any camera be found by Auto Discovery?

The camera’s IP address has different subnet settings from the NVR (the

Ethernet adapter card).

It is likely that the camera isn’t supported by the software, please see the

supported cameras list at Vanderbilt website at:


Why can't I get any video after the camera is added?

The possible root cause might be:

Wrong username and password

Wrong IP address

Firewall or Anti-Virus software blocks the communication port required on the

camera (ex: 554 for Axis)

Network wire or power cable is disconnected

The total camera bandwidth is over network bandwidth
