THE MOST HOLY TRINITY
THE MYSTERY OF THE BLESSED TRINITY Today we celebrate the solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. The Church sets aside this Sunday to focus our a en on on the mystery of the Blessed Trinity, God who is one, but three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The first reading from Deuteronomy emphasizes both God’s awesome greatness and amazing nearness. It might seem beyond belief, but the God of all crea on speaks to us, protects us, and guides us. The second reading from Saint Paul’s Le er to the Romans describes how we are to relate to the three persons who are one God. We are led by the Spirit to meet God the Father as adopted
children. Our adop on is such that we are even heirs with our brother, Christ, the second person of the Trinity, in whose sufferings we must also share. Looking Through Stained Glass
The Heart of One Who Serves the Lord
“Whatever you do, do from the heart, as for the Lord and not for others, knowing that you will receive from the Lord the due payment of the inheritance;” [Colossians 3:23-24a] When we look at the duties of the Altar Server in the context of this quote from Paul’s Letter to the Colossians, we get a sense for the importance of this ministry. While many might perceive that the Altar Server serves the Presider (Priest), the true object of the Altar Servers’ ministry is the Great High Priest, Jesus Himself.
The Altar Servers have the privilege of being close to the Lord in His Word and Eucharist. In fact, except for the clergy, they spend more time than anyone else close to the Lord during the Mass. It is a great honor to assist at the Mass, and the Altar Servers that we have at St. Paul of the Cross know this and act accordingly.
The ministry of Altar Server is integral to the Mass. When the Mass follows its usual rubrics (procedure), the first action of the Altar Servers is to lead the way with the Cross, candles and incense. In doing so, they help us to prepare a sacred space for the Lord at the beginning of Mass. Throughout the Mass, they continue to make room for the Lord. They do so by their active participation in the Mass. Through the Vatican II document on the liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium (SC), we are all called to active participation in the liturgy. [cf SC 14] The musicians notwithstanding, the Altar Servers may be the most active of all lay participants.
When one thinks about Altar Servers, one might recall the ministry of years gone by when it was reserved to “altar boys”. Well, much has changed
in the years since Vatican II, especially due to the application of documents like the one mentioned above. In more recent times, not only has the ministry been opened to girls, but also to adult men and women. These changes are great, especially since they allow for more people to get involved in the liturgy.
During the restrictions of the pandemic, we had to curtail the ministry of Altar Server to a great degree for the health and safety of the Altar Servers. We especially wanted to keep the children safe. As with some other liturgical ministries, the duties of the Altar Servers have mostly been carried out by the Deacons. [Seriously, God bless the Deacons for all their efforts.]
As we look forward to the restrictions of COVID relaxing, we are looking to restart the ministry of Altar Servers in our liturgies. We look forward to including both children and adults in the ministry again. We really can’t wait to have this important ministry back in action.

Diocesan Prayer for God’s Protection in the face of the Coronavirus Pandemic
Loving and gracious God, as in all times, we turn to You and implore Your protection and healing as we
face a new threat to our health and peaceful well-being in the coronavirus pandemic before us.
Help us to be united with each other and with all of our brothers and sisters around the world affected by this illness. We pray for all those in the medical field who are assisting patients and in the field of science who are discerning a cure, as well as for all
government leaders. Remember those who, through this virus, have passed from this life as well as their
families in their loss. At this time of fragile uncertainty, we also humbly implore You to grant us prudence, hope, courage
and patience. Dispel from us fear, panic and distrust which disrupt us in spirit to the detriment of our
well-being. We make our prayer in the name of your beloved
Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who always cured those who were sick with various diseases and drove out many demons. Our Lady, Patroness of our Diocese,
Queen of the Apostles and Comforter of the Afflicted, pray for us, Amen.

"Once again, the Catechism identifies a spiritual crisis we face, [13] that causes us to do violence to
peace. Anger and hatred are often at the root of violence. What we need to be looking for are the
early signs of self-inwardness and loss of empathy. As a society, we have become less and
less empathetic ourselves – a clear sign that, somehow, we all are becoming dangerous. The
loss of empathy is a sign that the Lord himself saw in each of us, and one of the reasons He died for us on the cross – to show us what genuine empathy, genuine love for others, truly looks like. Genuine
empathy is the entryway into the commandment to love thy neighbor and to abide in peace."
