estCompaniesAZ’s career events can help you launch your dream career by directly connecting you with award-winning employers. How do you make a great

impression? Here are eight ways to rock a career event.

1. Make sure your resume is error-free. Have a friend proofread it – again. Don’t rely on yourself to proofread your own resume, since your brain may see it as you intended it instead as it really is. One typo can send you to the “no thanks” category, despite how awesome you are!

2. Keep an open mind. Some job seekers are only interested in companies with major brand names, but the competition for jobs at these companies can be intense. By focusing on all companies with award-winning cultures, you may find a great fit with a lesser-known but still amazing organization.

3. Focus on what the employers need. You will be more likely to be hired if you focus on a position a company needs to fill. It’s okay to show your ambition, but avoid giving the impression that you view their current openings as only a foot in the door.

4. Dress the part. At a career event, you’re likely to be meeting with several companies, and they may have different expectations for dress. When in doubt, dress more professionally.

5. Be on time, and stay as long as it takes. If you are there when the room isn’t packed, you may get more time with the recruiters.

6. Prepare two or three sentences about yourself, your chosen field, and your interests, so you can tell an employer specifically why you think you’d be a good fit. Preparing in advance can help you overcome nervousness.

7. Ask for business cards, and get at least one contact name and email address for each employer you’re interested in. Ask about next steps, so you’ll know what to expect.

8. Follow up. Send a thank-you email, highlighting an element of your conversation if possible. Send a LinkedIn invitation to connect to everyone you met. Remember that everyone was at the event to meet professionals like you, so they’re likely to accept.

In addition to our career events, BestCompaniesAZ can help you land your dream career. Don’t want to face a job hunt all alone? Check out our Career Resources at bestcompaniesaz.com.

"I nominated my former manager Peter Burke for the award because of how easy he made it for me to manage my military and Schwab career," said Marine Corps Reservist Reynaldo Sandoval.

"My previous employer was not as supportive and my time away from my civilian job was often stressful,” said Reynaldo. “When I attend my training it is nice to know that I can step away and focus 100 percent on the mission.”

"My Marine Corps experience has helped me learn some valuable skills that are absolutely critical here at Schwab," Reynaldo said. "Among the most valuable is teamwork: knowing you have a support system to accomplish any task -- and being supportive of others -- is not only a skill that is useful at Schwab but it is useful in life."

Charles Schwab's commitment to employ and support military service men and women was recently recognized by the Department of Defense's Employer

Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR).

The ESGR honored Phoenix's Carmen Pedersen from Operations and Peter Burke from Client Service & Support with Service Member Patriot Awards, which recognize managers in the civilian workforce who have demonstrated strong support for their National Guard/Reserve team members.

Army National Guardsman Mylene Mirador nominatedher manager, Carmen, for the ESGR award. "I started on Carmen's team in July 2015," said Mylene. "Although I am in the Army National Guard, the challenges of being a soldier still remain; if anything, the amount of training we have to squeeze into a small amount of time can be very grueling. Carmen has been very supportive in so many ways, her ability to handle my training schedule -- including last-minute changes -- has been incredible.”

“My military experience translates into my day-to-day work here at Schwab by allowing me to mentally prepare and focus on daily challenges," said Mylene. “It also helps me adapt to new and unexpected scenarios; I am able to better analyze information and work in a team environment, the

T he job hunt is different for veterans. BestCompaniesAZ caught up with Patrick Fitzhugh from USAA who

has made the transition from military to civilian work. Patrick hopes his story helps others who are transitioning out soon or have done so recently.

What was the job hunt like for you as a veteran? In short, very difficult. The easiest thing was to fall into a government contracting job. But after deciding to get out of contracting work, I spent months without a job and was turned down time and time again. More frustrating, no one would give me any specific feedback as to why. With my skills and prior level of responsibilities, it just didn’t make sense.

What were the specific challenges you faced in looking for a civilian job?

Creating a resume that made sense to non-military, learning how to limit military speak, checking my ego, finding a good culture fit, and effectively translating my skills into what was desired in the civilian marketplace.

How did you find USAA? What was the hiring process like for you? I grew up knowing about USAA and was a member well before I could even drive, thanks to my dad who is also a veteran. I knew when moving to a city that had a USAA office that this was the only company that I wanted to work for. From day one, the process was unbelievably smooth and easier than any administrative process the military ever put me through. USAA’s hiring process made me feel appreciated right away when interviewers took a genuine interest in my military background and thanked me for my service. It was very impressive with how much they incorporate the military into every phase of training.

Did you experience anything different during the hiring process at USAA, as compared to other companies? If so, what and/or how?

At other companies, military service is just a checkmark on a hiring form. All the way through training and to this day, I have people reaching out to me for my perspective as a veteran.

What has it been like for you working at USAA?The transition from military and government to a corporate culture like USAA is never going to be easy, but I think this was the healthiest place it could have happened for me. USAA has not tried to replace my leadership background and experiences, but instead has built on them.

How have your military skills and experience transferred to a civilian career?

I worked as an instructor in a very specialized, small, and high stress environment, so public speaking, adapting to change quickly, and high stress situations have never slowed me down. It turns out that these are highly desired skills that don’t come naturally to most people in the civilian workforce. As a veteran, you can also bring a culturally diverse perspective to most situations, and finding an environment that embraces this perspective has been key to my success.

A Veteran Job Search Made Easier by USAA

FIND YOUR NEXT CAREER

How have you felt supported by your employer?USAA has an amazing veterans’ organization that I am actively involved in. It creates a platform and network for the veterans and family of military members to come together. USAA keep us true to our mission, and focused on the reality of what our veterans go through. Outside of this, the communications, events, and recognition of military birthdays and events create one of the most supporting military cultures that I’ve found outside of the military itself.

What advice would you give to those who are about to separate from the military?

Be proactive, and don’t expect someone to instantly want to hire you because of your veteran status, or extensive resume. Hire a professional to put your resume together, and do your research on how to translate your military experience into terms the company will understand. Finally, look at the culture of the organization above the position or title. Your first job or career out of the military will be short lived if it’s not a good cultural fit for you, regardless of pay and title.

What advice would you give employers about hiring veterans?Learn that veterans bring an infinitely diverse range of experiences, perspectives, skills, and strengths to the marketplace. They won’t always know how to translate this into your language, so learn what to ask and how to speak some of their language. Otherwise you run the risk of passing up on some of the best talent out there. With a focus on diversity in the workplace, veterans offer a distinctly unique set of values and perspective than you will find anywhere else outside the military community, and your company will only be stronger for tapping into it.

uilding leadership throughout the company is one of the biggest challenges in business. Many people want to advance, and they’re good at their jobs, but without leadership skills, they are set up for a world of struggle. Lacking good leadership, all other business resources are ineffective. Strong leadership must be evident throughout a great company, from the CEO to the front-line supervisor. Leadership is a key component of a positive employer brand.

One of the reasons Progrexion is a Best Company to Watch is because of its commitment to leadership excellence. The company builds leaders from within - 95% are promoted internally. In Arizona, Regional Director Lance Lindskov was promoted three times before reaching his current position.

The management structure includes many opportunities to learn and advance. For example, Managers In Training (MITs) are front line supervisors who spend half their time helping consumers, and the other half training and mentoring new staff. Many people have experienced the frustration of working under a new manager who was promoted because of functional skills but can’t manage people, and it’s hard for anyone to be successful in that scenario. Progrexion recognizes that issue and is focused on setting leaders up for success.

Through a certification program called LEAD, MITs can become certified in leadership values. The LEAD certification involves a wide variety of management tools, from the nuts-and-bolts of legal compliance to advanced communication skills, such as how to have a difficult conversation. MITs who are certified position themselves for further advancement.

Another Progrexion program focused on leadership is LIFT, a weeklong training including all the basics of leadership - how to coach people effectively, how to hold them accountable, how to create smart goals, and other day to day nuances of management.

The Regional Director follows up on those efforts by conducting regular Employee Value Proposition focus groups. In these meetings, he asks for feedback on how leadership is doing, and how can the company do more and do better.

This combination of structured, consistent leadership training and listening to feedback pays off. In a recent

B employee survey conducted by Best Companies Group, 91% of employees agreed that “I have confidence in the leadership of this organization,” and 95% believe that the leaders of the organization care about employees’ well-being. Supervisors also received high marks - 96% believe their supervisors treat them with respect and listen to their opinions, and the overall satisfaction with supervisors is 95%. These scores are the proof that consistent leadership training works.

Progrexion continues to create new leadership training. Currently, the Phoenix office is designing a program focused specifically on developing female leaders.

If you would like to be developed into a leader, learn to be a good manager and have fun at the same time, check out

CRGs allow employees (“crew members”) to come together and focus on trust, respect, and fairness. CRGs offer crew members a variety of ways to develop personally and professionally.

BestCompaniesAZ caught up with Cici Lew, the Arizona leader of Vanguard’s LEAP (Leadership and Engagement for Asian Professionals). Her thoughts illustrate the advantages of ERGs for employees.

BCAZ: Why did you decide to get involved in LEAP?CL: I wanted to connect with those like me and set an example through mentorship and programming to help them engage in our company culture and professional development. I’m always interested in learning and I find that our CRG programming produces the best content, speakers, and open discussions.

Valuing Diversity At WorkA Personal Story from Hyatt

BCAZ: Why have you enjoyed working for your company? RH: Hyatt Hotels has provided me with unlimited opportunity for growth and learning. We are a worldwide organization that encourages our employees to work in different brands, to contin-uously seek self-improvement, and to have fun! I’ve never been told that something isn’t possible when I have a suggestion. No matter what your position, your opinion matters.

BCAZ: Why do you recommend your company as a good place for diverse candidates to apply?

RH: Hyatt values a diverse workforce in which employees are encouraged to be themselves and work to their full potential. The sky is the limit and we are always looking for great talent to join our team!

obert Hauk is in Corporate Central Revenue Management for Hyatt. As a founding member and co-Executive Sponsor of Veterans@Hyatt, he shared his insights on the benfits of Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and his enthusiasm for Hyatt as an employer.

BCAZ: Why did you decide to get involved in an ERG?

RH: I am a military veteran, and I thought a group tailored specifically to our military affiliated employees would help further Hyatt’s mission of Care and Purpose with our employees and communities, and assist in expanding our leadership talent pool.

BCAZ: What types of activities does your ERG focus on?

RH: Overall development within our company and delivering our message to our colleagues and shareholders. We have also had the opportunity to participate in community training programs, attend military career events, and work with our hotels on fundraising and local events.

BCAZ: What sorts of experiences have you had by being part of the ERG?

RH: I’ve attended diversity and inclusion training and planning conferences for Hyatt, worked at various events with our corporate recruiting team and met a lot of people along the way! The biggest opportunities I have are to develop my strategic planning and leader-ship skills and to assist my fellow colleagues.
