Dear Neighbors and Friends: We are planning four days of activities for the Memorial Day weekend that I don’t think you will want to miss. First, “The Eyes of Freedom: Lima Company Memorial” paintings by Anita Miller will be on display at the Tribute Tower from Friday to Tuesday. This memorial was inspired by the Lima Company, a Columbus based unit that lost one Navy Corpsman and 22 Marines during 2005 combat operations in Iraq. One of the Marines lost was young Lance Corporal Chris Dyer from Evendale. The murals debuted at the Ohio Statehouse in 2008 and have been on exhibit across the country. This memorial is more than just for veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. This is for anyone who has ever served. In addition, the Recreation Center will be hosting a display of 25 Vietnam photos by Ken Williamson. Mr. Williamson was drafted into the Army in 1968. Following basic training, Ken was assigned to the Department of the Army Special Photo Office (DASPO). In 1969, his assignment took him to South Vietnam to document the operations of the Army’s Corp. of Engineers. Ken traveled the entire country of South Vietnam. His story and photographs convey his personal perspective. The culmination of the weekend will be a ceremony at 4:00pm at the Tribute Tower on Monday. State Senator Lou Terhar was instrumental in getting legislation passed to name the two miles of I-75 that runs through the village the “Lance Corporal Chris Dyer Memorial Highway”. He will speak and present a replica of the highway sign to the Dyer family. Lt. Godfrey Miller, a 93 year old resident and a Tuskegee Airman, will also be honored at this ceremony. These airmen were African-American pilots of WW II era who broke the color barrier of the Air Force. They flew 15,553 sorties over North Africa, Sicily and Europe. In commemoration, a Flight Chief of the “Red Tails”, Leslie Edward Sr., also age 93, will address the gathering. Musical entertainment will be provided by the 35 th Indiana Irish Regiment, the largest bagpipe band in the Midwest. They were established during the Civil War and today consist of 17 bagpipers and 12 drummers. After the ceremony at the Tribute Tower, we will have a motorcade travel to the unveiling of the “Lance Corporal Chris Dyer Memorial Highway” signs on I-75. Sincerely, Your Mayor MAY, 2018 VILLAGE OF EVENDALE GETTING TO KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR This past January marked 30 years that Eugene and Terri Rutz have been Evendale residents. They have four grown children who took advantage of many activities in the village throughout the years. When young, they all attended the plethora of children’s programs offered through the Village. Dear Neighbors and Friends:

We are planning four days of activities for the Memorial Day weekend that I don’t think you will want to miss.

First, “The Eyes of Freedom: Lima Company Memorial” paintings by Anita Miller will be on display at the Tribute

Tower from Friday to Tuesday. This memorial was inspired by the Lima Company, a Columbus based unit that lost

one Navy Corpsman and 22 Marines during 2005 combat operations in Iraq. One of the Marines lost was young

Lance Corporal Chris Dyer from Evendale. The murals debuted at the Ohio Statehouse in 2008 and have been on

exhibit across the country. This memorial is more than just for veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. This is for anyone

who has ever served.

In addition, the Recreation Center will be hosting a display of 25 Vietnam photos by Ken Williamson.

Mr. Williamson was drafted into the Army in 1968. Following basic training, Ken was assigned to the Department

of the Army Special Photo Office (DASPO). In 1969, his assignment took him to South Vietnam to document the

operations of the Army’s Corp. of Engineers. Ken traveled the entire country of South Vietnam. His story and

photographs convey his personal perspective.

The culmination of the weekend will be a ceremony at 4:00pm at the Tribute Tower on Monday. State Senator Lou

Terhar was instrumental in getting legislation passed to name the two miles of I-75 that runs through the village the

“Lance Corporal Chris Dyer Memorial Highway”. He will speak and present a replica of the highway sign to the Dyer

family. Lt. Godfrey Miller, a 93 year old resident and a Tuskegee Airman, will also be honored at this ceremony.

These airmen were African-American pilots of WW II era who broke the color barrier of the Air Force. They flew

15,553 sorties over North Africa, Sicily and Europe. In commemoration, a Flight Chief of the “Red Tails”, Leslie

Edward Sr., also age 93, will address the gathering. Musical entertainment will be provided by the 35th Indiana

Irish Regiment, the largest bagpipe band in the Midwest. They were established during the Civil War and today

consist of 17 bagpipers and 12 drummers.

After the ceremony at the Tribute Tower, we will have a motorcade travel to the unveiling of the “Lance Corporal

Chris Dyer Memorial Highway” signs on I-75.

Sincerely,

Your Mayor

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR

This past January marked 30 years that Eugene and Terri Rutz have been Evendale residents. They have four

grown children who took advantage of many activities in the village throughout the years. When young, they all

attended the plethora of children’s programs offered through the Village. All

four swam for the Evendale Eagles and enjoyed many victories. Feeding

animals every Saturday at Gorman Farm started as a volunteer job for Leah,

but still continues with Eugene. Terri volunteered at Evendale Elementary

while the children attended, doing most PTA jobs, including president. All

four children attended Princeton High School, receiving excellent educations

that prepared them well for college and a diverse world. Eugene has worked

POLICE & FIRE DEPARTMENTS

The Emergency Services of Evendale

encourages all residents to have multiple ways

of receiving alerts and warnings. Hamilton

County is rolling out a new notification system

for residents. This is a twofold system,

SMART911 and HC Alerts. SMART911 allows

first responders to have quicker access to

important information in case of an

emergency.

What Kind of Alerts Can You Receive?

National Weather Service Watches and Warnings for

Hamilton County Phone Call Alerts Available for: Civil Danger Warnings,

Civil Emergency Messages, Evacuation Immediate

Alerts, Flash Flood Warnings, Flood Warnings, Shelter

in Place Warnings, and Tornado Warnings, Critical

Safety & Emergency Information

Non-Emergency Messages from your Community

How Can You Get These Alerts?

Text Messages Email Voice Call (Available for the following alerts: Flood

Warning, Tornado Warning, Evacuation, Civil Danger

Warning, Civil Emergency Message, Flash Flood Warn-

ing, Shelter In Place Warning)

What is Smart911?

Smart911 is a tool that will allow you to share critical

information with 9-1-1 call takers and first responders

during an emergency. By creating a profile, you can pro-

vide first responders with key information about members

of your household (names, physical descriptions, photos,

pet information), as well as medical information that is

crucial during an emergency.

What Information Should I Include in My Profile?

People – Names, physical descriptions, and photos

will help responders act quickly if a child goes missing,

or help identify individuals in an emergency.

Phones – Add all phone numbers (especially cell

phones) so that 9-1-1 will have a better idea where

you are when you need help.

Animals – Include information about your pets and

service animals that responders need to be aware of.

Medical Information – Existing conditions, allergies,

disabilities and equipment, medications being taken

by all members of your household.

Address and Location Information – Property details,

photographs of your residence, utility shutoff

locations, access points to the residence, floor layout

and bedroom locations.

Vehicle Information – Include a description of your

vehicle, as well as the license plate number.

Emergency Contact Information – Include the

information of family members, friends, or neighbors

in the event of an emergency.

Communication Preferences – If an individual is deaf

or hard of hearing, or English is not the primary

language, dispatchers will immediately know that an

alternate form of communication is needed.

How Do I Sign Up?

You can log onto www.HCREADY.org and follow the

“warning” tab to enter your information. Or on May 14 &

21 from 9:00am – 12:00pm or 4:00pm – 7:00pm we will

have computers and people available to assist you in

signing up at the recreation center. This assistance is for

Evendale residents only and you must call the recreation

center at 563-2247 to reserve your 30 minute slot at one

of the computers. The Fire & Police Chiefs along with

some recreation staff members will be on hand to assist

anyone with the process for signing up for these vital

resources.

Did You Know…

Memorial Day or Decoration Day is a federal holiday for

remembering the people who died while serving in our country’s

armed forces. Memorial Day is not to be confused With

Veteran’s Day. Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men

and women who died while serving, whereas Veteran’s Day

celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans.

The practice of decorating soldier’s graves with flowers is an age

-old custom. Today many volunteers place an American flag on

each grave in national cemeteries every Memorial Day. Some

believe that an annual cemetery decoration practice began

before the Civil War and may have been the beginning of the

Memorial Day holiday.

Many people consider Memorial Day as the unofficial beginning

of summer.
