Dear Members & Friends,
Welcome to the BOTTAIA Wine Club. This is the inaugural newsletter so it’s appropriate that I explain the rationale and inspiration for BOTTAIA’s unusual design and policies. BOTTAIA Winery was inspired by the luxury and refinement of high-end hospitality in Northern Italy.
After operating Ponte Winery in Temecula for 15 years and researching the best Italian varieties for our soils, and the best enology techniques for the styles we were looking for, we started making wines for BOTTAIA 6 years ago. Then, armed with well-aged wines, as well as 15 years of operating experience, we built a very special winery: BOTTAIA. The word “BOTTAIA” means cask-aging room in Italian.
The project’s layout was inspired by the amazing country houses of the Veneto designed by Andrea Palladio in the 16th century. Although the buildings of BOTTAIA are best described as modern barns, they strictly follow traditional Palladian architectural principles. These principles dictate that the main building be elevated, centered, and have a prominent entrance—temple-like. The two ancillary buildings, fermentation and storage, flank the noble house. In back, the vineyards extend to the horizon, with the pool and lounging areas nearby.
From a visitor’s point of view, our idea was to introduce you to the wines in a calm and elegant environment, away from the noisy crowds that have become commonplace in almost every wine country, and particularly here in Temecula. Reservations and appointments are used to make sure we do not oversell our tasting rooms, and to keep our ratio of server to guest at optimal levels.
In order to showcase the fermentation vessels and techniques, the oak aging, and blending, we have planned tasting experiences within the large fermentation hall, which is unique in the use of large format oak and concrete vats, made in Burgundy. We then age the finished wines in very large oak casks. You will soon be able to taste the wines where they are born, between the vessels where they were made.
To showcase the effect of age and barrels in wine quality, we also have a standing tasting room in our barrel room. Occupancy here is limited to 40 guests. Then, to see the mutually positive effect of food and wine, we offer a seated tasting paired with high-end charcuterie. Lastly, for the view, and to offer an exclusive experience to Wine Club Members, we offer a pair of seated areas with stunning views of the surrounding vineyards, where all the wines are available by the glass and by the bottle. By the time you read this there will also be charcuterie boards available to accompany these incredible wines.
As in all new endeavors, expect some changes as we improve the operation of our new winery. We welcome your comments and suggestions, and thank you for your patronage.
