Hello Everyone,

My name is Cindy Polakowski and I am the new President of the

SPA (Darby has passed his scepter to me). I have lived with my

husband Dan and three sons in the neighborhood since 1996.

How time flies! When we moved in the boys were seven, five, and two. Now all of

them tower over me.

This neighborhood has had a huge impact on our family. The boys have developed

lifelong friendships and memories of hours of capture the flag, bush forts, and

sledding on the “Hill,” riding around the block on their bikes and playing in and

around the cul-de-sac. Every fall is marked by “must-have” new costumes for the

Halloween party. Christmas brings the Santa Trolley and a house full of family and

friends that can’t believe we live in such a picturesque neighborhood with so

strong and unique a sense of community.

Happy Hours (which everyone is welcome to) are where I have met many

neighbors for the first time. These get-togethers are where I get to put names with

faces and try desperately to imprint the correct name to the correct face.

Book Club, 5K’s, picnics, garden walks, bonfires, campouts, the music fest all make

this place rich. Thanks to our historically preserved and deed-restricted commu-

nity, our home values (even in these trying economic times) have done better than

many parts of Dearborn and communities around metro Detroit.

None of these wonderful things would happen if it weren’t for the SPA and the

many people who support and run these activities for you and me, and our fami-

lies.

Now is my opportunity to step up and help this special place called Springwells

Park nurture great kids, happy families, beautiful old trees, and one-of-a-kind

homes.

Aren’t we lucky?

Cindy

Springwells Park Annual Picnic Fun was had by all at the 2012 Springwells Park Picnic on August 25th. The picnic kicked off with hamburgers and hot dogs provided by SPA and sides and desserts brought by neighbors. Eating was followed by an epic water balloon spoon race, carnival games, fun in the bounce house, roasting marshmallows, and visiting around the fire. Thanks to Demian L'Ecuyer for his services as grill master, Maureen Pawelek for running the kids' games, Karen and Justin Law-rence for the loan of their portable fire pit, the Keelan family for the cooler loan, and Kelly and Pat Bruno for help cleaning up the day after. Special thanks to my husband Peter for his patience and all his help setting up for the picnic. See everyone at the Halloween Party!

Move over Michael Phelps!

Springwells Park Teen Takes on the London Olympics

“She’s always been an Olympic freak,” said Gwen Ald of her mother Pat. So it was no surprise when she invited her grandson Ryan Mondalek, son of Gwen and her husband Gus Mondalek of Ashby Lane, to attend the 2012 Summer Olympics in London this past month. This was

also Ryan’s first trip to Europe.

The grandma-grandson duo departed Detroit for London on July 27th. Upon their arrival, they traveled to see their first Olympic event in Weymouth---sailing. “The BBC was flying around in

helicopters everywhere,” Ryan said. “I really liked it.” They sat in one location during sailing, but were able to see seven sailing races happening at the same time either by viewing with

their own eyes or watching the events on a big screen.

Ryan and Grandma Pat then took the train back to London to see swimming. They watched USA’s Allison Schmitt, Ryan Lochte, and Michael Phelps race to victory. The highlight for Ryan

was the 400 meter butterfly. “Phelps won by a split second, which was cool to see.”

Swimming was followed by two days of track and field events and women’s diving. Ryan said his favorite track event to watch was javelin, but was less impressed by women’s diving. “The

dives were interesting the first time, but after six rounds---kind of boring.”

Before attending their final Olympic event, the marathon which they viewed from seats near Buckingham Palace, Ryan and his grandmother spent two days visiting sites in Paris and Lon-

don. Lucky for Ryan, he turned 13 while in Paris. They spent his birthday visiting the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe, and topped it all off with a delicious dinner. When asked what his favorite thing to eat in Paris was, Ryan responded with “steak and crepes.” Nutella

and banana crepes are at the top of his list of favorite Parisian foods.

They made time in their busy Olympic schedule to pick up souvenirs for the whole family. Ryan bought his mom chocolates from Buckingham Palace and “Tube socks” (socks that had a

map of the London transit system known as “The Tube” on them), his sister Brenna received the most gifts including a stuffed animal, and Ryan picked up a very special present for his

dad. Gus is a huge fan of the soccer team known as the Chelsea Football Club, and Ryan found a scarf with their logo woven into it.

Ryan also attended the 2010 Winter Olympics with Grandma Pat too. When asked which he preferred, Ryan said, “The Summer Olympics were the best be-

cause the food was better, there were a lot more events to see, and it wasn’t snowing all the time. But it’s the Olympics, it’s all pretty good.”

Dearborn Leaf Collection

Residents are reminded that the City of Dearborn is collecting leaves in neighborhoods in

two ways this fall.

As always, the preferred method of collection is to rake your leaves and put them in paper yard waste bags or in properly marked 20-32 gallon containers and set them on your curb-

side on your trash pickup day.

An alternative method for disposal is the City’s loose leaf collection system, which is sched-

uled to begin on Monday, October 22 and end on Friday, November 30.

For a loose leaf collection schedule, call the Leaf Collection Hotline at 943-2444. It is up-

dated daily after 4 p.m.

Loose leaves raked in to the street will be picked up in your neighborhood on your trash day

during the weeks that your neighborhood does not recycle.

Residents are asked to rake their leaves into the street as close to their trash day as possible

during their neighborhood’s non-recycling week.

City crews will start in your section where they left off during the last trash day in the non-

recycling week in your neighborhood.

New SPA Representative for Area 5

Beth Clark at 3 Adams Lane has volunteered to be the area rep

for Area 5. Thank you, Beth, for volunteering.

Storm Drains

The leaves are just starting to

fall and we will soon have large piles of them waiting to be picked up by the city. Please

try to keep the leaves away from the storm drains on your street. If you see that the storm drain on your street is

clogged, please take a couple of minutes to clear it of the debris. This will help

keep our streets clear dur-ing a rainstorm.

Many neighbors are concerned about the speed of vehicles driv-

ing through our neighborhood. This is a reminder to all that there are a lot of children, pets, bicycles, walkers, squirrels, rac-

coons, and other things to watch out for. The speed limit for all residential

areas is 25 miles per hour. Slow down and enjoy our beautiful

neighborhood.
