People need to learn to be cautious of anyperson pretending to ask for help or offer-ing any sort of help. I know many peoplewho have been robbed of their hard-earnedcash since the beginning of the month.

Just recently, two coloured ladies came tothe St Francis Haven claiming to bevisiting one of the pensioners on thepremises. They said they had met theperson at the Goldfields Mall that sameweek. That very same pensioner theyclaimed that they had met at the mall, hadin fact been sick the whole week and hadnot once left the premises.

I started asking them questions, andwhen they realised I did not buy their

story, they changed their tactics and toldme they were buying old jewellery.

Just by chance one of the old ladiesstaying at the St Francis Haven recognisedthem as the two girls whom she once letinto her house. They had made off with hercellphone, money, jewellery and otherbelongings.

Please be aware of these girls as they areout there trying to rob mostly pensioners oftheir belongings. Don’t give them accesswhen they visit your premises as they arecrooks. They travel in a gold Toyota Corollawith a Cape Town registra-tion number.They are very convincing, but don’t fallprey to their tactics, rather call the policeonce they come to your place or if you seethem roaming your streets. Don’t be astatistic of fraud. Be cautious at all timesand don’t allow strangers access to yourhouse.

Die enigstebedoeling met die vervanging van die kanselmet ’n verhoog is om doeltreffender kommu-nikasie met die gemeentelede te bewerkstel-lig. Die kerkraad het al gehele konsensus oordie besluit. Die NG kerk Welkom is nognooit as Moedergemeente geregistreer nie.Moedergemeente verwys slegs na die oudste

NG kerk in Welkom en dus is die naamnooit verander nie. Die kerkraad het nogaltyd daarop aangedring om weg te doen metonbelangrike tradisies wat niks met saligma-king te doen het nie. ’n Verhoog sal ookaktiwiteite soos doop, nagmaal en trouesmeer belig en vir die gemeente toeganklikermaak. Die koste van die projek wordheeltemal deur skenkings gefinansier. Ek isoortuig die verhoog sal tot groter bewusma-king van die Woord bydra sodat ’n groterlusmaking daardeur gekweek kan word.

MTN has decided not to erect a cellphonemast in the St Helena play park.

On Friday a letter was sent to eachresident who partook in the dispute withMTN.

In the letter MTN states that the place-ment of masts is not taken lightly, as thecivil construction and electronic equipmenton it are very expensive.

As a responsible corporate citizen, MTNlaunched the public participation for the StHelena mast out of goodwill in order toreap input from the residents of the area.

The intense response MTN received fromthe residents was overwhelming, as it isquite uncommon for a community, in thesedays, to stand-up for something they believein. MTN was never aware that the commu-nity values the park as much as they do. Itwasn’t MTN’s intention to degrade the parkor disrespect the community, but rather toprovide St Helena with first class connecti-vity.

MTN respects the community’s sentimen-tal outcry and decided to cancel the projectin Park 1095.

Although limited, MTN will investigateother properties for the erection of themast.

MTN also salutes the community for theirpatriotism towards the park. The communi-ty showed once again that a lot can beachieved by tactfully and politely approa-ching a situation.

THE South African Human RightsCommission (SAHRC) will investigateHuman Rights violations by the Free StateProvincial Department of Health.

“The DA has fought a long battlespanning almost six months for thedepartment to be investigated. Publichealthcare in the province is in crisisand the Health MEC, Benny Malakoane,and his department have failed torespond positively to our constructiveengagement that sought to turn thesituation around,” says Mariette Pitta-way, DA MPL in the Free State Provinci-al Legislature.

“The DA first approached the SAHRCrequesting it to launch an investigation inJune. We raised serious concerns and

provided sufficient prima facie evidencethat would warrant an investigation, butour initial request was unfortunatelydenied. “Our request for an SAHRCinvestigation into the department ispurely for the benefit of the people of theFree State. The DA is not in thebusiness of playing politics with people’slives. “We trust that the SAHRC willconduct its investigation with theurgency that it deserves and we lookforward to the commission’s findings andrecommenda- tions that would compelthe provincial Department of Health toimplement an honest and dedicatedstrategy that would seek to bring publichealthcare in the province up to acceptablestandards of best medical practice.”

SAVAS (St Andrew’s Visual Arts Society)het in 2014 ’n ongelooflike geseënde jaarbeleef.

“Dit was sommer ’n jaar met hoendervel-lekker hoogtepunte,” sê Kobus Bezuiden-hout, voorsitter van Savas.

Op die maandelikse byeenkomste het dielede hul foto’s van hoogstaande gehaltemet die res van die lede kom deel. ’n

Groep van beoordelaars het dan ook hulbydraes gelewer en so kon veral nuwe enjunior lede daarby baat vind en hulfotografie verbeter. Verskeie praatjies deurgassprekers het ook deur die jaar plaasge-vind om lede te inspireer.

Twee lede, Fanie Heymans en Mirna deHart, was suksesvol met panele wat hulleby die Fotografievereniging van Suid-Afri-ka (PSSA) ingedien het en het akkredita-sies daarvoor verwerf.

Heymans het ’n EPSSA- (Expert) en DeHart ’n LPSSA- (Licentiate) akkreditasieontvang. “Baie geluk aan hierdie lede. Ditis voorwaar iets om op trots te wees,” sêBezuidenhout.

Lede het ook deur die loop van diejaar aan verskeie nasionale salonnedeelgeneem en puik gepresteer – dit iskompetisies wat deur PSSA- geaffili-eerde klubs aangebied word.

Cecilia Duvenage het haar vlerkeegter verder gesprei en met haarfoto Kira Fourie aan ’n internasio-nale Chinese blomme-salondeelgeneem. Sy was een van netsewe Suid-Afrikaners wie seinskrywings krediet gekry het –voorwaar ’n puik prestasie, sêBezuidenhout.

Met die PSSA se jaarlikseinterklubkompetisie het Savas ooksy staal getoon en kan die klubmet reg breëbors wees. Die juniorlede (een- tot driester) het die 13deplek behaal, terwyl die senior lede(vierster tot meesters) die sesde plekbehaal het. Savas was ook algeheelsesde. Wat hierdie prestasie so beson-ders maak, is dat 42 klubs van oor dieland heen aan hierdie kompetisie deelge-neem het.

Wat die kroon span is Heymans se fotoDust Duel wat nasionaal as die algehelewenner in die senior afdeling aangewys is.

IT is so fascinating how everyone hasbeen going on about International AidsDay and one wonders if HIV/Aids is theonly serious disease in modern times.Just in November we had Internatio-

nal Diabetes Day and little was reportedor discussed about it.It is in this regard I fear most people,

especially in black communities, willcontinue to suffer and die from diabetes.Information on the disease seems

unimportant to most blacks and it is asif people only focus on HIV/Aids. Theyforget that diabetes mellitus has beenone of the main killer diseases amongstthe black population, as they lackinformation on the extent of it.Government’s focus seems to be more

on HIV than on cancer or diabetes;which are dangerous and neglecteddiseases. How many more people shouldsuffer or die from diabetes beforeadvocacy programmes are launchedregarding the disease?I am a type 1 diabetic patient and at

first I had no tangible information aboutit because it was not spoken aboutanywhere. You only later come to realisehow deadly it can be.As many people find employment, and

eat unhealthy like I did, they are likelyto suffer from this killer disease. Itwould be wise to talk about it andeducate our people, maybe many livescan be saved. I am of the view that notmuch is made public of its effects andwhat one should do once one is diagno-

sed. One in four people are likely to beliving with the disease without knowingit. Black people rarely do health auditsor check-ups.Educational background also plays a

vital role, as being illiterate plays adangerous part in our lives. I believeeducation on the disease will raiseawareness and educate many and justmaybe people will start doing healthcheck-ups and be able to maintainhealthy lifestyles.More people seem to be interested in

getting state chronic pensions thantaking their health seriously. People whoare diabetic are able to work andfunction normally like any other humanbeing. Patients can still have kids. Dueto a lact of information, I grew upthinking diabetic people are infertile.The time is now to create awareness ofthis silent killer disease.Being educated is better than not

knowing and one would know what todo once one is diagnosed.Everyone should take the initiative to

bring awareness about it to our peopleas many only find out once it becomesserious and one has to use a syringe.If one could have known, maybe one

could have prevented it going to such anextent.

ADRIAN MORE was born and bred inVirginia where he went to the LakeviewPrimary School before completing his highschool years at Grey College in Bloemfon-tein. Nowadays, audiences who loveclassical music are wowed by his work.As a composer, More is getting more and

more good reviews from knowledgeablelovers of classical music. Andy Wilding, awell-known radio presenter, wrote in hisreview of More’s piece Concerto 1: “Iunderstood that this composer has some-thing to offer that not only can be acceptedby the sophisticated classical ear, but isalso accessible to the commercial audience.Lullabies never get old, and this middlemovement is full of peaceful nurturing andholding, dressed in beautiful melodies.”More’s proud mother, Cindy, told Vista

her son, the third of four boys, alwaysloved music and by the age of ten hesimply knew music was his future. He canplay more than one instrument but thepiano is the instrument he prefers. Thepiece he wrote for the centennial anniver-sary of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestrawas created for various instruments withsheet music written for every singleinstrument used.After matric, More studied music at the

University of Cape Town where he achievedhis BMus degree. He went to London tofurther his studies at the Royal College ofMusic. He returned to Cape Town where heis now doing his doctoral. More loves theclassical composers like Mozart, Rachmani-

nov and Dmitri Shostakovich, but hisdream is to compose theme music for films.After listening to More’s concerto, Wildingsaid he would not be surprised to seeMore’s name on a film score in the not toodistant future.In the meantime, Capetonians are simply

BONGANE THULO was so inspired by thesadness of both his mother’s and a friend’sdeath in 1998 that he started to write songs.Three years later, while living in Johan-

nesburg, he produced his first song, whichwas good enough to go on air. The YFM andJozi FM radio stations added some ofBongane’s songs to their playlist.He rubbed shoulders with big names in the

music industry and performed with artistslike Bush Weed and DJ Malik. However, hisfamily in Thabong needed him and hereturned to look after his siblings.Nowadays an artist can live wherever he

wants to, because modern technology makesit possible, says Bongane, who decided tobuild a music career from his hometown. Hemarkets his own songs, as well as a clothingrange, under the Chaos label.He and his partner, Anele Snicker, have

produced six albums for other artists andBongane has also released his second albumrecently. His style is trap rap, the latesttrend in the rap genre.

Lavado, a local reggae artist, has just beennominated as best newcomer on the scene inSouth Africa. Bongane and Anele workedtogether to get Lavado’s CD on the shelvesand are extremely proud of their new kid onthe block.The group Evil Side Bullies, who is

making waves in New York, America, withtheir popular sound, also has close ties withBongane and Anele. Their sound is producedin the Welkom studio before it is electroni-cally sent overseas where it is mastered.Bongane and Anele also produce music

videos. Their first videos were shot with theweb camera of a laptop. They managed toborrow a better camera from a friend, butwould love to have decent equipment to filmeven better quality music videos.Bongane has a dream to build a big music

development centre in Welkom to helptalented musicians. He believes youngstersshould first complete matric before they starta music career, because being a musiciantakes more than just a talent for music.People who want to support this dream can

MIN mense kan sê dat hulledie geleentheid gehad het om ’nbaie besonderse mens en ikon indie Suid-Afrikaanse musiekbe-dryf en liefling van die silwer-doek in lewende lywe te konontmoet.

Dit was nie net ’n gewonekuier nie. Tafels was met pienken swart bykomstighede gedeken ou langspeelplate het as

plekmatjies gedien.Kolwyntjies met ’n foto van haar

gesig op was op die tafels virvriende en familie om aan te peusel.

Die bekende aktrise en komediantLizz Meiring was die programleierop die glansgeleentheid.

Sy het staaltjies uit Min se lewevertel en haar namens die Suid-Afri-kaanse publiek ’n baie geseëndeverjaardag toegewens.

Min Shaw het self ook ’n paarwoorde gespreek en agter diemikrofoon ingeskuif en ’n lied oftwee gesing. Vir ’n oomblik het syalmal teruggeneem in tyd met diesnik in haar stem wat net sy kandoen en almal bekoor.

Die country-ikon Lance Jameswas ook daar, en soos in dieverlede, het hulle die mense gaande

gehad met hul trefferlied Byme-kaar.

Ander bekendes wat Min sedag spesiaal gemaak het, wasManie Jackson, Barbara Ray,Jody Wayne, Chris Chameleon enGert van Tonder, om net ’n paarte noem.

Maandag het inwoners in ’nklein deel van die dorp inHenrystraat steeds in dieduister gesit.

Een van die moedeloseinwoners het aan Vista gesê’n munisipale amptenaar hethaar selfs gevra of sy sekerwas sy het genoeg geld op haarvoorafbetaalde meter gelaai.

Dié inwoner, wat verkies omanoniem te bly, het ook gesêdie brandweer antwoord gladnie sy telefoon nie of haal ditglo van die mikkie wanneer diediens gebel word.Vista het ook vroeër, ná die

brand in die Moth-klub, oor dieswak diens van die brandweerberig.Vista kon nie die brandweer

vir kommentaar opspoor nie.

FOR the past 20 years Goldfields Sunset Rotary has received 20tons of maize meal from a local farmer to be distributed within thecommunity. Some of this maize meal was cooked accompanied bystew and gravy, and on Saturday, 6 December, the residents livingat the municipal dump-site all received a warm plate of food, aswell as a 10 kg bag of maize meal each. The people living at theOdendaals dump-site will also be receiving maize meal. Servingthe food here are Dulcie Harris,Marcelle Lourens, Cheryl Boone andjust peeping out in the backround is Chris Boone.

DULCIE HARRIS of the Sunset Rotary Clubcelebrated her tenth year of being FatherChristmas for the Goldfields Hospice Day-care Centre’s Christmas party. All 30 child-ren received beautiful presents from theSunset Rotary Ann’s Club.

EARLY in April this year, Rotary International joined hands with theDepartments of Health around the world and hosted three daysof Rotary health care. All clubs were to identify an area, home,school or crèche in their community, and on these given days Rota-rians and healthworkers visited these places giving free health careto the young through to the old. Sunset Rotary chose the Thanda-nani Crèche and Day-care Centre situated on the outskirts of Tha-bong. Services such as HIV counselling and testing, TB and diabe-tes screening,measuring of bloodpressure, dewormingof children,administering of vitamin A and woman health care were included.

‘Not everyone gets to see and appreciate the voluntarywork of the Rotarians, and therefore they rely on the va-rious forms of media tomake the public aware, as well as

to show their appreciation.’

Prinsloo Ross van Ortolab Engineering inWelkom sê die enigste plek waar soortgely-ke masjiene is, is in Johannesburg.

“Dié masjien sal ’n geweldige ekonomieseinspuiting vir die Goudveld beteken,” sêRoss.

Die CNC-laser (Computer NumeranceControl) is ingevoer en in Welkom aanme-kaargesit.

Twee ingenieurs van Turkye lei tweewerknemers van die ingenieursmaatskappy,Ross en Carlo Gagiano, op in die gebruikdaarvan.

“Daar is ’n groot behoefte vir die doenvan laserwerk in die Vrystaat,” sê Ross.

Van elektroniese panele tot voertuig-on-derdele kan met die masjien uitgesny word.Gerekenariseerde programme word gebruik.

Ross sê geen taak is te groot of te kleinvir dié onderneming nie. Metaal soos staal,aluminium en koper kan gesny word.Graveerwerk word ook gedoen.

Ross se seun, Christo (30), het meganieseingenieurswese aan die Noordwes-universi-

teit gestudeer. Hy ontwikkel rekenaarpro-gramme wat met koordlose internet in dierekenaar ingevoer word.

Die lasermasjien is ten volle outomatiesen kan ’n jaar lank sonder onderbrekingwerk.

Die ingenieursfirma kan ook vir maat-skappye prototipes vervaardig en kanartikels vir kliënte ontwerp.

“Ons help mense om hulself te help. Onskliënte stap by ons in met ’n idee en stapuit met ’n artikel.”

Ross het Ortolab in 1984 in Welkombegin. Hy het aanvanklik ortopedieseonderdele vervaardig.
