Mexico is a federal con-stitutional republic in North America. It

is bordered on the north by the United States; on the south and west by the Pacific Ocean. Mex-

ico is a federation comprising thirty-one states and a Federal District, the capital city.

In pre-Columbian Mexico many cultures matured into ad-vanced civilizations such as the Olmec, the Toltec, the Teotih-

uacan, the Zapotec, the Maya and the Aztec before first contact with Europeans. In 1521, Spain conquered and colonized the terri-tory from its base in México-Tenochtitlan, which was administered as the Viceroyalty of New Spain. This territory would eventually become Mexico following recognition of the colony’s independ-ence in 1821. The post-independence period was characterized by economic instability, the Mexican-American War and territorial cession to the United States, a civil war, two empires and a domestic dictatorship. The latter led to the Mexican Revolu-

tion in 1910, which culminated with the promulgation of the 1917 Constitution and the emergence of the coun-

try’s current political system. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time that an opposi-

tion party won the presidency from the Institutional Revolution-

ary Party.

Toluca; from the Aztec word “Tolutépetl”, which meaning is “hill of the god”; is a full cultured city, this can be seen in its historical center where colonial age and neoclassi-cal style is represented specifically in buildings such as the Zócalo, Palace of the State Government and the Justice Palace, The Temple of La Merced, the Cathedral, The Cos-movitral, etc.

It also has its natural attractive that can be recog-nized in its outstanding volcano “Xinantécatl” and ancient vestiges that can be seen in the arqueological zones of Calixtlahuaca and Teotenango.

Since Toluca is the capital of the state of Mexico, there are several diverse and important educational cent-ers such as the state-funded public university, the Universi-dad Autónoma del Estado de México (UAEM) which has installations in various parts of the city, but the “Ciudad Universitaria” (CU) built around the Coatepec Hill is the most noticeable.

Toluca is also well known for being one of the most important industrialized areas in Mexico because of its geographic position in the center of the country and prox-imity to Mexico City as well as its well-developed infra-structure, the city has five major industrial parks: Corre-dor Industrial Toluca, Parque Industrial Lerma, Parque Industrial Exportec I., Parque Industrial Exportec II and the Parque Industrial El Coecillo which has attracted a large number of international corporations such as BMW, Mercedes Benz, Coca Cola, Femsa, Grupo Bimbo, Nissan, Nestlé, Pfizer, Bayer, Crisa, Barcel, Knorr, Trelleborg Auto-motive, and HSBC.
