TEACH KIDS TO SEW OVER THE BREAKWhen the kids and grandkids are home for the holidays this

Thanksgiving and Winter Breaks, take out the sewing machine

and teach them to sew.

Kids love creating. They love playing with mechanical things.

Here are some great suggestions for success, both in teaching

and in having them love the learning process.

For younger kids, have the project and fabric chosen for them.

Choose something with simple lines, like an easy quilt square

using bigger strips that can be made into a pot holder or a

trivet at the holiday table. They can also stitch up a double

sided cloth for the bread basket and a matching table runner.

These are simple straight lines, and they can tell the family, “I

made that!”

For the older kids, choose a Kwik Sew pattern that uses fleece. Why

fleece? It doesn’t fray, so the kids don’t need to worry about finishing

the edges. We offer classes in the Polar Fleece Pullover and Pajama

Pants for younger sewers. If the children are closer to 8 years old,

you may want to cut and iron the pattern pieces for them, have them

pin the pattern down and then both of you cut it out together to speed

the process.

Remember, their stitching lines will not be straight, and they grow

quickly, so making a project a little on the large side is always a good

idea. We find that our students love wearing their new lounge wear

right away, and they can throw it on for a sleepover or just hanging

out at home. Other goodies: pillow case, scarf, drawstring bag.

Teach them this valuable skill that the schools no longer offer.

Reenactor Fest is a convention for people interestedin military history, as well as historical reenactors ofall time periods, spanning from the days of the RomanEmpire through Vietnam. It is completely unique inthis regard. The excitement and camaraderie between reenactors is elec-tric! It is a celebration of the hobby of historical reenacting as a whole -a chance to learn about other time periods, as well as your own!
