Thanks to ICI, which stands for International Channel, or Canal International. This family owned business under the corporate name of Mi-Cam Communications succeeded in obtaining a CRTC license to operate a TV station after five years of working tirelessly with lawyers and government officials. Recognizing that there is a growing population of multi-cultural or ethnic groups in this province, particularly in Montreal, Sam Norouzi, the President of the company who has worked in the television business for several years, and who used to work with Nestor Ambas of the local TV Pinoy in the early 90’s, knew that the time has come for him to go into this business in a much bigger way. When ICI TV approached the editor of the North American Filipino Star last July 30th, and offered her the opportunity to produce a weekly show about the Filipino community in Montreal, Zenaida Kharroubi did not hesitate to accept it and immediately recruited Al Abdon to be the Technical Director because of his extensive experience in video production and photography. Things developed fast as there were already 18 other ethnic groups who have signed up ahead of her to produce their shows. In a matter of days, and after a general meeting of all producers, she signed an agreement to buy air time and was given assurance that she will have the exclusive right to represent the Filipino community in Montreal. Anyone else who will contact them will be referred to Zenaida Kharroubi, now the Executive Producer of Mabuhay Montreal TV under the corporate name of Filcan TV Productions, Inc. which was professionalism, integrity, goodwill, and a predisposition to do community volunteer work which will eventually be compensated proportionately, and equitably at the right time. Since August 1, 2013, weekly meetings have been held to coordinate, discuss, and review details for the first episode due to be broadcast on October 17, 2013, Thursday at 7:00 P.M. on ICI TV, on Videotron Channel 16/616 HD, and on Bellnet Fibe Channel 216/1216HD. Besides the Filipino Canadian show going under the name “Mabuhay Montreal TV”, there are 18 other ethnic groups that will broadcast their shows in 15 different languages. ICI TV will officially launch on October 15, 2013 via the above named channels. Eventually, ICI will probably be available via satellites. That still remains to be determined in the near future. Mabuhay Montreal TV crew has been very busy over the past three weeks covering community events and other subjects of interest to the Filipino community. Everyone is motivated to contribute to the production of a good show worth watching not only for its entertainment value but most importantly for its educational content – each time people watch the show, they will gain some knowledge about our heritage, traditions, business and professional careers, music, art, inspirational stories of Filipinos who started as a newcomer and succeeded to be in a profession they were trained for back home, and stories that have made a positive impact on our community be it in volunteerism, heroism, innovation, sportsmanship, entrepreneurship. Filipino-Canadian running for councillor in Darlington by W. G. Quiambao

The candidacy of Erik Hamon, aFilipino-Canadian, is generating interestand excitement in Darlington riding, homeof many Filipinos. Hamon, who was bornand raised in Montreal, is young , dynamicand most of all, bilingual, a must in Quebec.

" I decided to run to do somethingfor the community in NDG.," said Hamon."It bothers me to see on television thedilapidated buildings in Côte des Neiges.Residents in Côte des Neiges have a rightto live in good living conditions."

For the past five years, Hamonhas been working as a real estate broker inCôte-des-Neiges, NDG. Prior to this, heworked as a political organizer as well asadviser at Montreal city hall. In bothinstances, he was responsible for all ofcultural communities at city hall includingMontreal's official observance of MartinLuther King, Jr. day. He is also involved atMontreal City Council's Resolutionsupporting the Chinese community'sefforts to seek redress for the head tax.

His work with the culturalcommunities has brought him to theborough of Cote-des-Neiges, NDG, wherehe has decided to run as a councillor inthe district of Darlington under theCoalition of Montreal party.

Hamon is also involved, andactive in non-profit volunteer work. For the

last four years, he has volunteered for theMontreal SPCA and has organized itsparticipation in the city's St. Patrick Parade.Past volunteer work includes being amember of the organizing committee of theTaste of the Caribbean food festival andbeing a member of the programmingdepartment of the Montreal Comic.con ,.

The speech of Sen. JinggoyEstrada may not be as explosive asexpected but the public is benefittingfrom it because we are getting a biggerand more realistic picture of how rottenthe system is, and how “tuwid na daan”is being drawn with crooked lines.

Estrada is one of three senators(the two others are Senators Ramon“Bong” Revilla and Juan Ponce-Enrile)charged with plunder in connection withthe anomalous use of their PDAF asallegedly operated by Janet LimNapoles.

Estrada, in his 90 minutespeech, never denied his involvementwith Napoles’ scam. His complaint was,why only the three of us?

It is distressing because whatwe are seeing is a quarrel amongthieves. But we console ourselves withthe wise words of old folks that “Whencattle rustlers quarrel, the farmer getsback his cow.”

Are we going to get back ourcow? That all depends on the public’svigilance.

We are most interested with thedisclosure of Estrada that after theSenate overwhelmingly for theconviction of then Supreme CourtJustice Renato Corona, a prioritycrusade of President Aquino to reformthe justice system in fulfillment of hiscampaign promise to eliminatecorruption in government, those whovoted to convict were given P50 millioneach.

Estrada related instances whenthe Priority Development AssistanceProgram was used as “carrot” byMalacañang under Aquino, just likewhat Gloria Arroyo did, whenever theywant something from members ofCongress like the ouster of thenOmbudsman Merceditas Gutierrez (shewas eventually persuaded to resign inexchange for not filing charges againsther and for her to get her full retirementbenefits); the Sin Tax bill, and theReproductive Health bill.

Estrada said: “Here now, Mr.President, as our people must know,are some ugly facts and information onthe PDAF that our people must knowand which i challenge anyone to deny.”

His most important disclosure:“Hindi na tuloy tuloy nakapagtataka ngkumalat ang balita na ang mgakongresista at mga senador ay inalokdin ng PDAF para siguraduhin angimpeachment at conviction ng datingPunong Hukom ng Korte Suprema.

Budget Secretary FlorencioAbad: Illogical. Absolutely, completelynot true. As far as I’m concerned, wedid not bribe the lawmakers.

Former Sen. Panfilo Lacson: Iconfirm the P50-million “incentive” thatwas allegedly given to senators whovoted to convict then Chief JusticeRenato Corona. Drilon told us about it ina caucus.

Senate President FranklinDrilon: That is not true. I have yet to seethat letter mentioned by Sen. Estrada.

Sen. TG Guingona: I gotadditional P50 million but it was notconnected to Corona conviction.

These past few weeks, themedia has been coveringdemonstrations, both pro and against,the plan to introduce a new Charter ofValues when the National Assemblyresumes. Those who are against itargue that it goes against CanadianCharter of Rights and Freedoms whilethose who are in favor point out thatthere is a need for it to underscore theseparation of the State and the Church.But do we really need to have thischarter? Are there enough goodreasons to warrant the introduction ofsuch a charter? Why is it necessary toprohibit doctors, nurses, police, courtstaff, civil servants, teachers, daycareworkers and others on the publicpayroll from wearing religious clothingwhile on the job? For obvious reasons,performance of any job does notdepend on one’s religious attire.

Most people are not pleasedwith the intention of the PQ tointroduce a law that will inhibitindividual religious freedom. Montreal-area mayors representing nearly 2million people have rejected it. So haveopinion leaders such as GérardBouchard and Charles Taylor, who co-authored Quebec’s report on“reasonable accommodation” ofminorities five years ago. So havePrime Minister Stephen Harper,Quebec’s two most prominent MPs,Thomas Mulcair and Justin Trudeau,and provincial Liberal oppositionleader Philippe Couillard.

If we can ask Pauline Marois aquestion, about her motivation inbringing the charter into Quebecpolitics, her only reason is to introducesecularism in government. According

to those who focus on the prospects ofan election, she is supposed to haveher an eye on convincing moreQuebecers to support her government.However, according to the latestsurveys, it seems that she is losingrather than gaining as the Liberals arenow increasing their support and mayform a majority government. Will shelisten to the people and retreat the billnow that she sees the negative impactit has on her party? Will this be herstrategy of showing that she listens tothe people and therefore may win morevotes for the independencemovement? It is hard to say what isreally her goal. Besides spendingvaluable taxpayer dollars in promotingthe Charter, there seems to be no valueto be derived in having such a charter.In fact, the only result of such a chartermay be court challenges against itsimplementation in the public sectorand if the private sector is included, thelouder and stronger will be the protestsbecause it is clearly against theCanadian Charter of Rights andFreedoms.

No one seems to know thereason why the PQ decided to plan forthis charter of values. From allaccounts, there is no need for it. Wehave managed to keep the Church andState separate for a while now. Thereseems to be no sign of going back tothe old days when the Church was sopowerful over the people’s daily life.

We wish that the governmentwould focus more on the economyrather than on spending money on acharter that no one wants.

Test signal currently beingtransmitted by CFHD-DT (ICI) onChannel 47.1

Montreal’s tenth over-the-airtelevision station has beguntransmitting.

CFHD-DT, which wants tooperate under the brand InternationalChannel/Canal International (ICI) but isin some legal trouble with Radio-Canada over that, announced via itsFacebook page and its Twitter accountthat it was on the air as part of itstesting phase and would be airingpromotional videos soon.

The 5,500-watt signal,broadcasting from a Bell-owned towernear the police station onRemembrance Rd., is showing apartially blurred time-lapse cityscapevideo, with the callsign, an emailaddress and the station’s logo at thebottom. The signal has no audio.The station is broadcasting on Channel47.1 in 1080i high definition.

Station manager Sam Norouzi,who has been very busy the past fewweeks, tells me that the station shouldlaunch some time near the end ofSeptember or early October. Part of thedelay is because he needs tocoordinate with cable providersVideotron and Bell (Fibe) to ensurecarriage on their systems. Because it’san over-the-air channel, ICI will becarried on both cable systems’ basicpackages, without a per-subscriberfee.

Norouzi said there hasn’t yetbeen discussions with satellite TVservices or out-of-market cablesystems about carriage, so the stationwill launch without carriage on thosesystems at first.

When it does air, ICI will carryprogramming in 15 languages for 18ethnic groups, with most of itsprograms produced by independent

groups that purchase airtime and selltheir own advertising. He said hisfamily’s production company Mi-CamCommunications, as well asindependent producers he’s workingwith, have hired a lot of freelancecamera operators who have been busyshooting footage (including the recentMontreal Italian Week), and “the teamis growing every day.”

“It blows my mind the qualityof the stuff we’re shooting,” he said.Unlike the kind of stuff seen on CJNTduring the Canwest days,programming on ICI will be in high-definition, and have superior technicalquality, he said.

ICI is being helped throughfinancial, technical and otherassistance from Channel Zero andRogers, who offered it so that theCRTC would approve Rogers’spurchase of CJNT and its conversioninto an English-language station that’snow part of the City network. Rogers isgiving the station more than $1 millionin funding for programming, andChannel Zero, in addition to providingfree master control services for fiveyears, has offered to loan up to $1million to the station.

Rogers also offered up to 200hours a year of free programming fromOMNI, its ethnic network. Norouzi saidat first he didn’t think he’d be usingmuch OMNI programming. Now hesays he’s looking at adding threeprograms from OMNI (but not the dailynewscasts).

Norouzi said much of the pastfew weeks have been spent ontechnical aspects, including installingthe antenna (and having to fix it after itwas accidentally dropped and brokenduring installation). “I’m going to writea book eventually about all theadventure,” he said jokingly.“In the past two weeks, things haveprogressed very rapidly.”

talking about consulting lawyers andthreatening a lawsuit over the PartiQuébécois' controversial charter of values.

But what about the senior cabinetminister from Quebec?

He says he's not too bothered by it.Denis Lebel, who is the

Conservatives' Quebec lieutenant, wasasked in an interview Tuesday what it wasthat upset his government about thereligion plan.

"There's nothing that upsets me inthere," Lebel told The Canadian Press.

This is while his colleague JasonKenney, the minister for multiculturalism,has posted a picture of himself on Twitterwearing a turban to protest the charter.

The government also says it willconsult Justice Department lawyers shouldthe PQ plan pass the legislature and, ifnecessary, will launch a legal challenge ifit's deemed to violate minority rights.

But Lebel says it's too early to getexercised.

"We'll respect provincialjurisdiction, let people make their choiceand, after that, we'll see — we'll make sureCanadians' rights are respected," Lebelsaid.

Asked whether the idea appearedconstitutional Lebel replied, "I'm not alawyer. Is this the actual text that they'll voteon in the national assembly? Nobodyknows."

The PQ government has notactually tabled a bill yet. It promises totable one in the fall based on a preliminaryplan it recently laid out.

The plan, in its current form asadvertised, would forbid people with Sikh,Muslim and Jewish headwear from holdinggovernment jobs, along with Christianswearing larger-than-average-crosses.

Since the current plan hasinsufficient support from the legislature'sother parties, the PQ has two basicoptions: water it down in the bill, or stick toits guns and run an election on the idea.

So far the PQ has shown littledesire to water it down. In fact, thegovernment has hinted it might eventoughen the plan by narrowing its five-yearopt-out clauses for institutions.

Although several polls suggestthe plan has considerable support inQuebec, there has been vigorousopposition and many prominentQuebecers have spoken out against it.The pro-charter side is pushing back.

A former Supreme Court judgehas joined the pro-charter cause. A pro-secularism group that held its first eventTuesday said its 60 members includeretired justice Claire L'Heureux-Dubé.

The group's supporters includeL'Heureux-Dubé, former student strikeleader Martine Desjardins, union leaders,and members of minority communitieswho oppose religious accommodation.

Leila Bensalem, an Algerian-born

teacher at a multi-ethnic school inMontreal, applauded the PQ initiative. Shesaid the list of demands for religiousaccommodation at school is growing, fromhalal food to separate gym classes forboys and girls.

"We are literally bombarded, dayafter day and week after week, bydemands for reasonableaccommodations," she said Tuesday.

"We've been asking ourselves foryears, 'When will someone finally stand upand put an end to these hot potatoes inschools?'"

She said religious clothing is thefirst way fundamentalists begin to exerttheir influence.

"That veil is an ideology... Thefundamentalists, when they establish anIslamic republic, the first thing they askfrom Muslim women is to wear the veil,"Bensalem said.

"It's like the flag they want theirwomen to wear. They representfundamentalism... Even if they say, andthey keep saying, 'It's my choice,' theyforget to say this is the only choice theyhave."

L'Heureux-Dubé was not atTuesday's event. However, in an interviewthis year with Radio-Canada, sheexpressed concern about women coveringtheir faces.

The judge also argued that whilecertain rights are fundamental, like the rightto life and equality, other civil liberties "canbe reduced" in a "free and democraticsociety."

L'Heureux-Dubé, 86, wasappointed to the Supreme Court by ex-prime minister Brian Mulroney in 1987. Shewas the second woman ever named to thehigh court and she served until 2002.

The question of whether the PQplan would ever pass the constitutional testhas been a matter of some contention.

The PQ says its plan was studied,and endorsed, by provincial JusticeDepartment analysts, although there havebeen reports that the government ignoredlegal advice it didn't like.

The government is also underpressure to show any feasibility studies forits plan — such as the scope of theproblem it's supposed to be responding to,and what the impact would be on peopleand institutions.

Attempts to reach L'Heureux-Dubé this week were unsuccessful, andthe Rassemblement pour la laicité said shewas travelling outside the country.(Canadian Press)

In the July 16 to August 15,2013 issue of the Filipino Forum,Magallanes wrote the following: "Theyhad a valid excuse but they weredisqualified because it's in that stupidComelec rule written by Bernardo("BS") Sarmiento, who was caughtstealing garbage bags from a Montrealhospital and kicked out for sexualharassment."

Sarmiento’s lawyer sent Mr.Magallanes a demand letter asking thathe retract said statement and thatfailure to do so would entail Mr.Sarmiento to undertake legalproceedings for defamation ofcharacter.

Magallanes' style of reportinghad landed him in hot water in the past.The list of Filipino leaders he hasallegedly defamed over the yearsincludes: James de la Paz, Au Osdon,Benny Parial, San Tino, ZenaidaKharroubi, then-PhilippineAmbassador to Canada PacificoCastro, Mount Royal MP Irwin Cotlerand lately, Fr. Jess Dimafilis, the parishpriest of St. Kevin’s Church on Cote desNeiges Road.

In the July-August 2013 issueof the Filipino Forum, Magallaneswrote, "According to Irwin Cotler,member of Parliament, former ministerof justice and solicitor general, it wouldrequire following the process in the oldFAMAS Constitution and Bylaws for theratification of the new one last February

19, 2011 to be legally adopted. I don'tbuy the argument that the ratificationwas legalized by a 58-5 votes. It can'tbe ratified by 39 percent of regularFAMAS members," Mr. Cotler said.When Cotler was asked if he madesuch statements, he denied that he did.

Here is what the formerminister of justice wrote in his e-mail tothis writer dated September 12, 2013:

“In reply to a request for comment fromthe Filipino Star about the re-publication of quotations attributed tome in the Filipino Forum’s July-August2013 edition - repeating falsequotations published two years earlierin June 2011 regarding the FAMASconstitution – I reiterate, once again,that no such interview took place with

the Filipino Forum; that I made no suchcomments with regard to the FAMASconstitution (a constitution I had noteven read); that I do not use suchlanguage as attributed to me (e.g.“bogus”); and finally, that I would nevermake such comments so as to interferein the internal affairs of any community.Indeed, it is a long-standing policy ofmine not to interfere in the internalaffairs of any community – particularlythe Filipino community whosefriendship I value so much.Accordingly, I so notified the FilipinoStar following the publication of thefalse quotations attributed to me both inJune 2011 and again in July 2013,underlining as well that I would not wishfor this matter to escalate as thefriendships and the people involved –and the well-being of the Filipinocommunity – are much too important.”

More than a decade ago,Marlene Balderama, a FAMAScontestant for the Miss Philippines-Montreal, was accused by Magallanesof stealing the money of theassociation. The truth is that Balderamadelayed turning over the sale of ticketsbecause of the controversy in thepageant's results. Magallanes wasasked to retract his story but hepublished an erratum in his paperinstead of outright retraction.In the December 2005 issue of theFilipino Forum, he wrote, "Why didRobles run?" "Some Filipino and non-Filipinos are saying that he was paid torun. The payment was big enough toblock votes from going to somebodyelse but big enough to make him win,"

they said. Page 4, "If Robles did not run,his vote would probably go toRandhawa and the latter would havewon by 16 votes," said a JewishCanadian woman who did not want tobe identified. When asked by theCommission on Elections who hissource was, Magallanes could notname her.

In the same year, Magallaneswas found guilty by the Quebec PressCouncil, not only once but twice, forbreaches of journalistic ethics whenJames dela Paz, whom he had beendefaming, lodged a complaint againsthim.

Following are excerpts fromthe Quebec Press Council's decision:"According to the Council, tocharacterize the plaintiff (de la Paz) as a‘usurper’ and to make the comment"Applebaum should be careful. Hemight be polluted by the sins of de laPaz," in the Filipino Forum was to passnegative judgement on the plaintiffwhich should, at the very least, haveappeared in an article identified as anopinion piece.”

The Council’s findings furtherstated, “The Council observes that onseveral occasions the respondentMagalllanes did not make thenecessary distinctions between a newsreport and an opinion piece, and thathe publishes opinions and commentsin news reports. The two journalisticstyles are confounded, constituting amajor breach of the responsibility of thepress to achieve impartial news inkeeping with facts and events."

Lawyer asks Magallanes to retract story about Sarmiento

distinction of being the only FAMASofficer who has served the associationfor eight consecutive years.

For his dedication andcommitment to his job, Rillo waspresented a Plaque of Recognition bythe outgoing FAMAS 2011-2013Executive Board last month.

In 2007, Rillo served as thevice president of the late AlbertFloresca and in 2019, as vice presidentof Claro Bermudez. A few months afterBermudez was elected as FAMASpresident, four of his directors movedto another province. They were neverreplaced. Before the end of 2009,Bermudez lost his job. He accepted ajob offer in Africa.

"Claro thought that he couldstill act as president for as long as hewanted ," Rillo said. "I had to ask him togive me a mandate to act as president.As his vice, I couldn't do much. Forexample, if the Hydro bills arrived, thecollector wouldn't talk to me. "

To make matters worse, theremaining directors were notperforming their duties anymore. OnlyRillo, together with Manny Lagasca,held the fort while Bermudez was inAfrica. They were determined to servethe community by keeping FAMASoperational in the best way possible.

"Unlike the time of Au, we had no dailyvolunteers then," explained Rillo. "Forexample, Manny and I had to go to the

center to open the door for the Frenchstudents on the weekends. And in theafternoon, we had to wait till the lastperson left to close the center."

In 2009, Rillo ran forpresidency against Au Osdon but he

lost. Rillo wasn't a sore loser. It nevercrossed his mind not to cooperate withthe Mabuhay Team though he is fromSamahang Makabayan Team. Hewould help the new members of the

Executive Board to the CREP tointroduce them to the personresponsible for offering Frenchclasses. To prepare for the Pista saNayon, he would go with them to thecity hall to get a permit. He made iteasier for the new board to function

smoothly. Rillo's conviction was put to a

test in 2011. When the SamahangMakabayan Team lost the election toMabuhay Team and staged a couple ofdays' protests and held placards infront of the center, Rillo was flayed bythe Samahang Makabayabn for notjoining his teammates. He wasbranded as a turncoat.

"Why should I join them? "asked Rillo. "What they were doingwasn't right. The messages on theplacards were disgusting. They shouldnot hate Au. She was declared as thewinner by the Comelec. In Canada,everybody has a right to appeal. TheSamahang Makabayan didn't use thatright."

From 2009 to 2011, Rillocontinued to serve as an ex officio ofFAMAS. He was always availablewhenever his services were needed.

"I'm serving the community,not anybody else," he explained.

Rillo was recently appointedby Osdon and Julie Parado as memberof the Board of Trustees. Thatappointment by the two communityleaders is a validation of his excellentservices to the community.

A man of a few words, Rilllo isa member of various prestigiousorganizations which include The Orderof Knights of Rizal, Lions InternationalClub, Lodge #137 and KarnapShriners.

Dear EarthTalk: Is it true that Americankids are going through puberty earliertoday than in previous generations,and are there any environmentalcauses for this? -- Paul Chase, Troy,NY

Research indicates that indeedAmericans girls and boys are goingthrough puberty earlier than ever,though the reasons are unclear. Manybelieve our widespread exposure tosynthetic chemicals is at least partly toblame, but it’s hard to pinpoint exactlywhy our bodies react in certain ways tovarious environmental stimuli.

Researchers first noticed the earlieronset of puberty in the late 1990s, andrecent studies confirm the mysteriouspublic health trend. A 2012 analysis bythe U.S. Centers for Disease Controland Prevention (CDC) found thatAmerican girls exposed to high levelsof common household chemicals hadtheir first periods seven months earlierthan those with lower exposures. “Thisstudy adds to the growing body ofscientific research that exposure toenvironmental chemicals may beassociated with early puberty,” saysDanielle Buttke, a researcher at CDCand lead author on the study. Buttkefound that the age when a girl has herfirst period (menarche) has fallen overthe past century from an average ofage 16-17 to age 12-13.

Earlier puberty isn’t just for girls. In2012 researchers from the AmericanAcademy of Pediatrics (AAP) surveyeddata on 4,100 boys from 144 pediatricpractices in 41 states and found asimilar trend: American boys arereaching puberty six months to two

years earlier than just a few decadesago. African-American boys are startingthe earliest, at around age nine, whileCaucasians and Hispanics start onaverage at age 10.

One culprit could be rising obesityrates. Researchers believe that puberty(at least for girls) may be triggered inpart by the body building up sufficientreserves of fat tissue, signaling fitnessfor reproductive capabilities. Clinicalpediatrician Robert Lustig of BenioffChildren’s Hospital in San Franciscoreports that obese girls have higherlevels of the hormone leptin which inand of itself can lead to early pubertywhile setting off a domino effect ofmore weight gain and faster overallphysical maturation.

Some evidence suggests that“hormone disrupting” chemicals mayalso trigger changes prematurely.Public health advocates have beenconcerned, for example, about theomnipresence of Bisphenol A (BPA), asynthetic chemical in some plastics,because it is thought to “mimic”estrogen in the body and in somecases contribute to or cause health

problems. BPA is being phased out ofmany consumer items, but hundredsof other potentially hormone disruptingchemicals are still in widespread use.

Dichlorobenzene, used in somemothballs and in solid blocks of toiletbowl and air deodorizers, is also a keysuspect in triggering early puberty. It isalready classified as a possible humancarcinogen, and studies have linkedprenatal exposure to it with low birthweight in boys. The U.S. EnvironmentalProtection Agency (EPA) has recentlymade screening Dichlorobenzene for

hormonal effects a priority.

Parents can take steps to reduce ourkids’ so-called “toxic burden”: Buyorganic produce, hormone- andantibiotic-free meat and dairy and all-natural household cleaners. And keepthe dialogue going about healthy foodand lifestyle habits so kids learn how tomake responsible, healthy choices forthemselves.

Order of Knights of Rizal from theUnited States, Canada, Europe andAsia attended the 4th Canada RegionalAssembly at the Hyatt Regency Hotelfrom Aug. 31 to Sept. 2,. The theme ofthe convention was What FreedomMeans to Me ?"

Rizal is a fraternal organization thatupholds the idealism of the Philippines'national hero. The Order of the Knightsof Rizal, Montreal Chapter, was started

by Bert Abiera in 1999, after thePhilippine Centennial Celebration.

The formal opening ceremonyof the convention on the first day,

Saturday, included processional,invocation and acknowledgement ofChapter delegates. In the afternoon,the group of delegates spent fourhours touring the city. Among theplaces they visited were MacKenzieKing Park where the bust of Rizal wasinstalled, Queen Mary Rd. where apark was named after the Philippines'national hero, St. Joseph Oratory and

the Olympic Stadium.The Commanders Ball started

at 6 p.m. One of the highlights of theprogram was the presentation of

More interesting and informative topicswere discussed in the afternoon. ReghisRomero, Supreme Commander, said thatin school, children were asked how muchthey know about Rizal - his date of birth, hisdate of death, his middle name . .Unfortunately, the knowledge of children isdisplaced. He urged that the teachings ofRizal be put into actions, faithfully andeffectively, with the help of Filipino leadersand local politicians. .

Romero was followed by Judge TomRodriguez who talked about How Can WePreserve Our Rights to Life, to Liberty andPursuits of Happiness. Many were movedwhen he said, `Freedom is a gift from Godand nobody can`t take it away from you,Freedom is dangerous when one doesn`tknow how to use it,. Freedom doesn`tmean the right to incite action or write ordistribute obscene materials. Freedomdoesn`t mean to improve yourself at theexpense of other people and indulge intoaction that will hurt others."

The last speaker was Lucien Spittael, aBelgian married to a Filipina. He talkedabout the Unknown Rizal`s Objects,Letters and the Wrong Names of Rizal`sGirl Friends. Some of the items and objectsshown on slides were: newspaperclippings about the murder of the motherof Juan Luna, Rizal`s best friend, lamps,tables, chairs, sketches.

The Gala Night, where the guests wererequired to wear formal attire started at 7p.m. Some of the guests were SenatorTobias Enverga, CDN Borough MayorLionel Perez, CDN Concillor MarvinRotrand. A play, Dr. Jose P. Rizal Trial by the NewJersey Chapter was shown and Rigodonde Honor was performed by ClevelandChapter.

Third day, Sunday, meeting with theSupreme Commander and Rededicationand Rizalian Pledge were held in themorning.

In the afternoon, photoopportunities took place before thedelegates left.

The next convention will be heldin Cleveland next year.

The atmosphere of excitementand hilarity suddenly changed to a moreserious tone when the emcee, KnightDondon Gomez, introduced the guestspeaker, Ms. Edith Fedalizo, whoprovided the inspirational message for theevening. Known to the Montrealcommunity as the pianist and coordinatorfor the Panday Tinig Choral Ensemble,Ms. Fedalizo is a nurse and an educatorand is involved in various community

organizations such as the Filipino Nurses’Association of Quebec, where she servesas the Director for the Educationcommittee. She spoke of “bayanihan”and how it can make a difference in thelives of the people being helped. Sheemphasized the need to continue thephilosophy of “bayanihan” not only for thepresent, but for the future. “The challengefor you now, is how you can continue thisconcept of “bayanihan” through yourchildren and their children’s children. Ifso, then this would be a much betterworld”, she said. Not a drop of a pin couldbe heard. Everyone listened to Fedalizo’sinspiring words.

Thereafter, the Panday Tinigserenaded the audience singing AmigosPara Siempre, a song about the gift oftrue friendship; The Impossible Dream – asong of perseverance towards reaching aseemingly impossible dream; and NoMan Is An Island – SUUL’s theme song.

The North America Chapter ofthe Sigma Upsilon-Upsilon Lambda(SUUL) Knights and Ulphans, Fraternity-Sorority, celebrated its 40th foundationday anniversary, on Saturday, August 17,2013, at the Ruby Rouge Restaurant,Clark Street, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

At 7:20 p.m., the emcee for theevening’s festivities, Knight DondonGomez, ushered in the 160 guests whotook their assigned seats. Mrs. Rolynda E.Villan (Montréal) who delivered thewelcome address spoke on behalf ofKnight Belino Bong Villan. The PandayTinig Choral Ensemble of Montreal,conducted by Paul Imperial andaccompanied by pianist Edith Fedalizo,thereafter sang the national anthems ofthe Philippines and Canada. Everyoneremained standing as Marivic Aplaon,Panday Tinig member, recited theInvocation. This was followed by thesinging of the Tagalog version of theLord’s Prayer, Ama Namin, by the PandayTinig.

Dinner was served at 7:45 p.m.Entertainment numbers were provided byNeldred Fuentes, an ulphan, who sangSet Fire to the Rain and Proud Mary,accompanied by Russian-born guitarist,Mark Gauterman. Meanwhile, Tess Berja,a former Panday Tinig singer, renderedtwo Tagalog songs – Sapagka’t Ikaw ayAkin and Sapagka’t Kami ay Tao Lamang.

Speaking on behalf of KnightRey Abing (California), Supreme Knight ofNorth America, Knight Jan Michael Veloso(Toronto) introduced the Sigma Upsilon-Upsilon Lambda.

The evening’s emcee, KnightDondon Gomez, presented the history ofthe SUUL organization. It is to be notedthat the sixteen founders of SUUL hadprepared the history and constitution andby-laws of the organization. Sir KnightAntonio Casalmir, one of the SUULfounders (California) could not make it toMontreal. His proxy, Knight Gomez, is theorganizer of the Alpha Omega chapter,Bayugan City. He is a former SupremeKnight, Omicron chapter, XavierUniversity, Ateneo de Cagayan, Cagayande Oro City and Alpha Chi Chapter, JoseRizal University, Manila.

Thereafter, the Knights andUlphans were individually presented tothe audience. Knight Jaime Veloso(Toronto) explained about connection ofthe SUUL philosophy of helping andbrotherly love to its theme song, “No ManIs An Island”. “Everyone needs everyone.

Respect towards one another is the rightway to live, that permeates every aspectof our lives.”(Article V, Section 5, SUULconstitution). The Knights and Ulphansthen sang their theme song, “No Man Isan Island”.

Knight Lyndon Dizon (To) saidthat the SUUL fraternity song has guidedits members’ way of living- respect forhumanity, fraternal tradition and culture,code of ethics, wisdom, loyalty andintegrity. “These values”, he said “havebecome the framework for SUUL’sknights and ulphans in maintaininghonesty and discipline. The lyrics of thesong reflect SUUL’s love for peace, order

and unity – all of which bring us inharmony with the world.”

Marlaw Teves (Toronto) read theSigma Upsilon-Upsilon Lambda creed forthe knights and Jhing Badbad(Vancouver) for the ulphans. Knight RamilAlcano (North Carolina), former SupremeKnight, North America chapter, deliveredthe pledge of allegiance. Roger Perez(Windsor) proposed a toast and askedthe crowd to ‘cheer’ by saying “HappySUUL 40th Anniversary”.

Ulphan Gialane Gulane(Montreal) said introductory words beforethe knights and ulphans sang their songof thanks. “Thanksgiving is a time whenwe come together with families tocelebrate unity, family bonding, traditionsand express thankfulness to the almightyGod for the blessings and benevolence,keeping them safe, providing everythingthey have been through His grace”, shesaid. The knights and ulphans then sangthe country gospel song “Thank You LordFor Your Blessings on Me”. JowenSoguilon, and Ulphan Mary Ann Vicencio,both of Panday Tinig, provided the

One day you decided to buy agood camera, Its been your wish eversince you’ve seen photographers with bigcameras, long lenses and posing peopleat every location you see. You get tired ofusing your small RF camera and decidedto be in the big leagues! You go to Futureshop or Best Buy since they always havebeen receiving flyers and their

promotions are attracting. The fun part isafter unpacking it from the box, you areintimidated by the number of buttons anddials, and by the thickness of the manual,it can be very tempting to put the manualdown, flick it onto ‘Auto’ and startshooting. Using Auto mode is not badbut

If your desire is to make yourshots more creative, then learn thesebasic topics.

1. Shooting modesThe best place to start is with

shooting modes. The shooting modeswill most likely be found on a dial labelledwith ‘auto, Av, Tv, P, M’ and maybe more.Selecting a shooting mode will determinehow your camera behaves when youpress the shutter, for example, when‘auto’ is selected, the camera willdetermine everything to do with theexposure, including the aperture andshutter speed. The other modes, ‘Av, Tv,P, M’, are there to give you control:

Don’t worry if your mode diallooks a little different; differentmanufacturers use different abbreviations

for the shooting modes. Your mode dialmay have the letters ‘A, S, P, M’ (instead ofAv, Tv, P, M), yet they all function in thesame way. Below, I have given eachabbreviation for the given mode.

Aperture Priority (Av or A)Aperture priority can be thought of as a‘semi-automatic’ shooting mode. When

this is selected, you as the photographerset the aperture and the camera willautomatically select the shutter speed.So what is aperture and when would youwant to control it?

The aperture is the size of theopening in the lens through which light isallowed to pass whenever the shutter is

opened – the larger the aperture, themore light passes through.

The aperture is measured in ‘f-stops’ and is usually displayed using an‘f-number’, e.g. f/2.0, f/2.8, f/4.0, f/5.6,f/8.0 etc, which is a ratio of focal lengthover diameter of the opening. Therefore,a larger aperture (a wider opening) has asmaller f-number (e.g. f/2.0) and smalleraperture (a narrower opening) has alarger f-number (e.g. f/22). Reducing theaperture by one whole f-stop, e.g. f/2.0 tof2/8 or f/5.6 to f/8.0, halves the amount oflight entering the camera.

Aperture is one of the mostimportant aspects of photography as itdirectly influences the depth of field – thatis, the amount of an image that is in focus.A large depth of field (achieved by usinga small aperture large f-number) would

mean that a large distance within thescene is in focus, such as the foregroundto the background of the landscapebelow.

Whereas a shallow depth of fieldachieved by using a large aperture (smallf-number) would produce an image whereonly the subject is in sharp focus, but thebackground is soft and out of focus. Thisis often used when shooting portraiture orwildlife, such as the image below, toisolate the subject from the background:

So when using aperture priority,you can get complete control over yourdepth of field, whilst the camera takescare of the rest.

Shutter Priority (Tv or S)Similarly to aperture priority, this

is another ‘semi-automatic’ shootingmode, though in this instance, you as thephotographer set the shutter speed andthe camera will take care of the aperture.The shutter speed, measured in seconds(or more often fractions of a second), isthe amount of time the shutter stays openwhen taking a photograph. The longerthe shutter stays open, the more lightpasses through to the sensor to becaptured.

You would select a short shutterspeed if you wanted to freeze a fastmoving subject, such as shooting sports,action or wildlife, for example: You woulduse a long shutter speed if you wanted toblur a moving subject, for example waterrushing over a waterfall (slower shutterspeeds will require you to put the cameraon a tripod to ensure the camera is heldsteady whilst the shutter is open)

So whilst you worry about whatshutter speed you need for a givenphotograph, the camera will determinethe appropriate aperture required to givethe correct exposure.Aperture and shutter priority shootingmodes may be semi-automatic, meaningthat some may deride their use becausethey’re not fully manual, however they areincredibly useful modes to shoot in that

can give you enough creative control tocapture scenes as you envisage them.Program (P)Program mode is almost a halfway housebetween the semi automatic modes ofaperture/shutter priority and full manualcontrol. In program mode, you are ableto set either the aperture or shutter speed,and the camera will maintain the correctexposure by adjusting the other oneaccordingly, i.e. as you change theaperture, the shutter speed willautomatically change, and vice versa.This gives you additional freedom thatusing either aperture priority or shutterpriority cannot give without switchingbetween shooting modes.Manual (M)

Manual mode is exactly what itsounds like, you are given full control overthe exposure determination, setting boththe aperture and shutter speed yourself.There will be an exposure indicator eitherwithin the viewfinder or on the screen thatwill tell you how under/over exposed theimage will be, however, you are left tochange the shutter speed and apertureyourself to ensure you achieve the correctexposure.

These controls are the basictools for creative pictures. If you liketaking portraits, the best subjects are yourfamily. Don’t use flash at the beginning.Learn existing light photography. It willgive you rich colour and intensity.

If you’re interest is landscape goto St. Joseph Oratory or the Old Port.There are plenty of buildings, pebbledstones, railroads, ships, the Old Clockand maybe Jacques Cartier Bridge.Fall is the best time to start working onyour color compositions. Red leavesmake attractive subjects. Go to theLaurentians and take family pictures withthe autumn trees as your background.You will be surprised at the result of yourshots.

Good afternoon to everyone.We hear this phrase all the time, and Iquote: “ We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,that they are endowed by their Creatorwith certain unalienable Rights, thatamong these are Life, Liberty and thePursuit of Happiness.”

Who among you believe thatthis phrase is found both in the U.S.Constitution and the Declaration ofIndependence? How many of youbelieve that it is only found in theDeclaration of Independence and not inthe U.S. Constitution? It is only found inthe Preamble of the Declaration ofIndependence, however there is asimilar line, “Life, liberty or property,” inthe U.S. Constitution. It is also similar toa line in the Canadian Charter of Rights:“life, liberty, security of the person.” Thismorning, Sir Salvador Cabugao,mentioned these rights in his speech,“What Individual Freedom Means toMe.”

The phrase can also be found inChapter III, Article 13 of the 1947Constitution of Japan, and in PresidentHo Chi Minh’s 1945 declaration ofindependence of the DemocraticRepublic of Vietnam. The FifthAmendment and FourteenthAmendment to the U.S. Constitutiondeclare that governments cannotdeprive any person of “life, liberty, orproperty” without due process of law.1You might be interested to know thatWikipedia mentioned that the U.S.Constitution has had a considerableinfluence worldwide on laterconstitutions. International leaders havefollowed it as a model within their owntraditions. These leaders include BenitoJuarez of Mexico, Jose Rizal of thePhilippines and Sun Yat-sen of China.2Life, liberty and pursuit of happiness –these are the rights foremost at theminds of those who declaredindependence from Great Britain. Thefounders based the government on thepremise that individual freedom andliberty are foremost and the welfare ofthe country is improved when

individuals are free. 3 But what does itmean to us today? What are the rights,responsibilities and expectations ofcitizens in the Philippines, in Canada, inEurope, in America or elsewhere in the21st Century?

When I was informed that thetheme of the 4th Canada RegionalAssembly is, “What Freedom Means toMe,” what resonated in my mind is whatI heard in our class in the law school Igraduated from - the University of thePhilippines, and that is freedom doesnot give me or you the right to shout“fire” in a crowded theater where there isno fire or while I am free to move myhands, it stops where it hits the nose ofsomeone beside me.”

“The great men who wrotethese early governmental documentsrecognized the authority of God. Theirdocuments address rights in a mannerthat makes it clear they understand therights come from God and not agovernment. The Declaration ofIndependence eloquently acknow-ledges this when it says, “that all menare created equal, that they areendowed by their Creator with certainunalienable Rights, that among theseare Life, Liberty and the pursuit ofhappiness.”4

What does unalienable rightsmean? Unalienable rights refers to theidea that humans have certain rightsbecause they are humans and theserights are given by God and cannot betaken away by man or government. 5 Awhile ago, Sir Reghis Romero said thatin Dr. Rizal’s letter to the young womenof Malolos, he admonish them to teachtheir children love of honor, honesty in

deed, love and respect for fellowmenand respect for God.

Based on the facts that thefounders recognized on the authority ofGod, and that Rizal himself taught thatwe should have respect for God, pleaseallow me then to quote the Bible, (TheBook of Life) in Galatians 5: 13, (NIV)“You my brothers, were called to be free.But do not use your freedom to indulgethe sinful nature; rather, serve oneanother in love.” Avoid unclean living.Verse 17 enumerates the sinful naturesuch as sexual immorality, impurity anddebauchery; idolatry and witchcraft;hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage,selfish ambition, dissensions, factionsand envy; drunkenness, and the like.

“Freedom does not give us theright to do what we please, but to dowhat pleases God. When we do whatpleases God, fear, anxiety, and guilt arereplaced by peace, forgiveness, andliberty.” 6

So, how can we preserve ourrights to life, liberty and the pursuit ofhappiness?

(1) Don’t forget theresponsibilities that go with the exerciseof these freedom.

“Freedom is dangerous in thehands of those who don’t know how touse it. That’s why criminals are confinedin prisons with barbed wires, steel bars,and concrete barriers. Or consider acampfire that is allowed to spread in adry forest. It quickly becomes a blazinginferno.” 7 For example, in Jan. 2001, amotorist driving along 1-8 in San DiegoCounty flicked a cigarette butt onto thecenter median, sparking a fire thateventually burned more than 10,00acres, destroyed 16 homes and charred64 vehicles. 8 Unchecked freedombecomes a blazing inferno. Uncheckedfreedom can create chaos. Like a ragingfire, freedom without limits is dangerous.But when controlled, it is a blessing toall. 9Freedom of speech, for example, doesnot include the right: 10 To incite actions that would harm others(e.g., shouting “fire” in a crowdedtheater.”)Schenck v. United States, 249 U.S. 47(1919)

To make or distribute obscene materials.Roth V. United States, 354 U.S. 476(1957)

To burn draft cards as an anti-warprotest.United States v. O’Brien, 391 U.S. 367(1968)

To permit students to print articles in aschool newspaper over the objections ofthe school administration. HazelwoodSchool District v. Kuhlmeier, 484 U.S.260 (1988).

Of students to make an obscene speechat a school-sponsored event.Bethel School District #43 v. Fraser, 478U.S. 675 (1986).

Of students to advocate illegal drug useat a school-sponsored event. Morse v.Frederick, 551 U.S. 393 (2007)

(2) “Live as free men , but do not useyour freedom as a cover up for evil. ( 1Peter 2: 16 NIV). Peter tells us how tolive our lives. (2:17). (a) Show proper respect to everyone; (b) Love thebrotherhood. In our own Code of Ethicsas Rizalian, it says that we shouldmaintain a tolerant and understandingattitude towards our fellowmen. Whenwe do this, most of the social problemcould be solved. (c) Fear God. The fearof the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;Again our Rizalian Code of Ethics says,we must be truthful and honest inthoughts and in deeds. (d) Honor theKing.” Show respect for yourgovernment. (3) Do not use your freedom in thepursuit of happiness by enrichingyourself at the expense of others. In thebook, “Rizal is my President – 40Leadership Tips from Jose Rizal,”Napoleon Almonte said, “ Earn yourmoney honestly. Rizal could haveamassed wealth through backdoordeals. With his stature and influence, hecould have easily promoted his personalinterests. After all, his family, peers andbenefactors lent him money for hisadvocacies.

But money had no power overRizal. He did not allow it to corrupt him.Knowing the value of work, Rizal choseto earn his keep honestly. In Europe, heworked as an ophthalmologist. When hewas exiled in Dapitan, he farmed, fishedand engaged in trading.

Leaders must always conduct

(Posted on August 29, 213) The50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s‘March on Washington’ – its full name wasthe March on Washington for Jobs andFreedom – is a poignant and importantmoment of remembrance and reminder forus all, of the universal struggle for equalitystill being fought today, and of the courageand commitment of a human rights herowhose “I Have a Dream” speech has beenimmortalized in history. I speak of thismilestone event and the person at its corenot only because of their historicalsignificance, but because of the impact ofthat day, that march, and that speech onme personally. Indeed, I am proud to saythat I was present in Washington onAugust 28th 1963, and the day’s imagesand voices have left an indelible impact notonly on my memory but on my being.

The day itself was an incredibleexperience, as all those present can attest.Mahalia Jackson’s stirring spiritualselectrified the crowd, and her rendition of“We Shall Overcome” has become myown private national anthem, as my familywell knows. Bayard Rustin – the legendarycivil rights leader – was the organizationalgenius behind the March, and his strategyof non-violent mass protest has enduredas a model for effective citizen advocacytoday; I had the pleasure of subsequentlymeeting and working with him, and I ampleased that he has just received(posthumously) the U.S. PresidentialMedal of Freedom. I recall as well JohnLewis – then a young 23-year old youngblack leader, and now a leading U.S.Congressman – calling for freedom.Appropriately, “Let Freedom Ring” is thename of this week’s commemorativeevents. Martin Luther King’s speechwriter,Clarence Jones – whom I recently met at aconference – told me that the famous “I

have a Dream” portion was actuallyimprovised by King at Mahalia Jackson’ssuggestion, a fact not apparent to those ofus hanging on King’s every word.

I attended the rally then as ayoung law student of 23 – and then-editorof the McGill Daily – who had earlier thatyear written about Martin Luther King andthe civil rights struggle. I stood in thecrowd of 250,000, which the man standingnext to me referred to as “the brotherhoodof humanity” while humming “We ShallOvercome”.

Even 50 years later, Martin LutherKing’s voice still resonates and impacts metoday.

We all stood with strangers raptwith attention as King told of his dream ofan America where his four little childrenwould one day live in a nation where theywould not be judged “by the colour of theirskin but by the content of their character”.

In his unique melodious andspiritual voice, he spoke movingly: “I havea dream that one day this nation will riseup and live out the true meaning of itscreed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.’”King spoke of the Constitution as apromissory note.

He continued – and I can still hearthese words as if they were just spokenyesterday – “I have a dream that one dayon the red hills of Georgia the sons offormer slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together atthe table of brotherhood.[…] I have adream that one day even the state ofMississippi, a state sweltering with the heatof injustice, sweltering with the heat ofoppression, will be transformed into anoasis of freedom and justice.”

Though speaking primarily to theAmerican reality of racism and the

struggles of the civil rights movement,King’s message was a universal one ofcommon cause wherever we may be – ofthe struggle against racism, against hate,against injustice – and the struggle forhuman rights, for human dignity, forrespect and recognition.

Ultimately, King’s lesson is onethat we have sought to – and need to –internalize in Canada in terms ofdeveloping a culture of human rights inplace of any culture of racism, or hate, orcontempt. Indeed, Martin Luther King Jr.ought to be seen as metaphor andmessage of this struggle, of his recognitionthat we are all one human family; that wehave all been created in the image of God,and that this is the foundation of equality;of the dignity of difference, recognizing aswell that respect for the inherent dignity ofthe human person requires respect for theequal dignity and equal worth of allpersons; that this is what humanbrotherhood is all about; that the strugglefor human rights and human dignity, forequality and respect, are, in the mostprofound and existential sense, thestruggle for ourselves. For in what we say

– or more importantly, in what we do – wemake a statement about ourselves as apeople; we make a statement aboutourselves as people.

Clearly, inequality, discrimination,racism and hate are still with us, whether itbe the plight of the Baha’i in Iran, the Coptsin Egypt, violated women in the Congo, orgay rights in Russia, or even in our owncountry with the tragic inequalities that stillhaunt many First Nations and minoritycommunities.

On this 50th anniversary, let usrecall that Martin Luther King Jr. – likeNelson Mandela, who later invoked him aswell – was the embodiment andexpression of the long march towardfreedom, of the great struggle of the 20thcentury for equality, for human dignity, andfor the brotherhood of man – a strugglethat continues today.

Martin Luther King was l’espoirand l’esprit – the hope and inspiration – ofone of the great moral, political, legal, andspiritual uplifting projects of the 20thcentury. He was the architect of the politicsof inclusion, of equality, of respect, ofrecognition – not only for black Americans– not only for America – but for all ofhumanity. As he expressed in the immortalwords of his Letter from a Birmingham Jail– also 50 years ago, in 1963 – words weought to recall, affirm, and act upon –particularly on this most momentousoccasion: “Injustice anywhere is a threat tojustice everywhere.” May this clarion call toaction – as memorialized in the “I HaveDream” speech – inspire us as wecontinue to strive towards realizing King’svision in the next 50 years and beyond.

Brush the skin with melted butteror oil. Tie drumsticks together with string(for stuffed birds only).

How to roast a turkey

Ingredients:1 (12 pound) whole turkey3/4 cup olive oil2 tablespoons garlic powder2 teaspoons dried basil1 teaspoon ground sage1 teaspoon salt1/2 teaspoon black pepper2 cups water

DirectionsPreheat oven to 325 degrees F

(165 degrees C). Clean turkey (discardgiblets and organs), and place in a roastingpan with a lid.

In a small bowl, combine olive oil,garlic powder, dried basil, ground sage,salt, and black pepper. Using a bastingbrush, apply the mixture to the outside ofthe uncooked turkey. Pour water into thebottom of the roasting pan, and cover.

Bake for 3 to 3 1/2 hours, or untilthe internal temperature of the thickest partof the thigh measures 180 degrees F (82degrees C). Remove bird from oven, andallow to stand for about 30 minutes beforecarving.

Ingredients:1 egg1 tablespoon all-purpose flour3/4 cup white sugar1/2 teaspoon salt1 1/2 cups pumpkin puree1 1/2 cups evaporated milk1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon1/2 teaspoon ground ginger1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg2 tablespoons light corn syrup1 recipe pastry for a 9 inch single crust pie

DirectionsPreheat oven to 450 degrees F (230

degrees C).Add the sugar gradually to the pumpkin

puree. Beat well an stir in the flour, salt andspices. Stir in the corn syrup and beat well.Stir in the slightly beaten egg, then slowlyadd the evaporated milk, mixing until wellblended. Pour the batter into the unbakedpie shell.

Bake at 450 degrees F (230 degrees C)for 10 minutes then reduce the oventemperature to 325 degrees F (165degrees F) and continue baking pie for anadditional 30 minutes or until a knifeinserted into the mixture comes out clean.

Megan Young crowned Miss World 2013

Megan Young just made Philippinehistory by winning the crown at theMiss World 2013 held in Bali, Indonesiaon Saturday, September 28.

The 23-year-old actress is the firstFilipina to win the Miss World since thepageant’s inception in 1951.

Young had been primed to winafter she advanced to the semi-finalround last Friday. She won in the fast-track events at the 2013 Miss Worldbeauty pageant.

Young, 23, thanked her fellowFilipinos immediately after she won thetitle.“Salamat sa mga kababayan ko.Mahal na mahal ko kayo [Thank youto all my fellowmen. I love you all],” shesaid.

Young waved to an ecstatic crowdas the triumphant music played.

Miss France was the runner upwhile Miss Ghana took the third place.

Megan was born in the USA beforemoving to the Philippines when shewas 10. Currently studying Digital Filmmaking, Megan has been appearingon screen since the age of 15, starringin films, TV shows, and as a presenter.Megan has ambitions of movingbehind the camera in the future, takingthe role of director after gaining

“This is embarrassing. I don’tthink P-Noy (Aquino’s nickname) evenasks about his sister’s (TV host KrisAquino) relationships. This issue isnakakatawang nakakaasar,” Ai-Ai saidduring a media gathering for her latestmovie, “Kung Fu Divas.”

Raymond Gutierrez, one of thehosts of TV5′s “Showbiz Police” has noqualms talking about his familyespecially if it’s about good news.

With regards to his twin brotherand former Kapuso Network primetimeking Richard Gutierrez whose career issaid to be in limbo at the moment;Raymond declared that he will be anasset to TV5 or to any network. BeforeRaymond, her eldest sister, actress andTV host Ruffa Gutierrez was the first tosign a deal with TV5. It’s yet unseen ifRichard would follow suit.

The entertainment press andRichard’s fans are curious with whomhe’d sign up.

Raymond has a simple advice tohis twin: Go where the work is.

“Kung saan maganda ang ilalatagsa yo,” he remarked “Si Chard kasimarami na siyang nagawa at kayangmga gawin. So not only is he an actorfor soap operas. He has donedocumentaries, reality shows andmusical varieties. Mas malawak angrange niya kaysa akin.”

Raymond pointed out that themonths Richard took off from showbizdid his brother good. He described himto be more relaxed and even moreexcited to return to work.

According to him, Richard workedfor more than 11 years with GMA-7. Ifhe wasn’t doing soap operas he was

doing documentaries, reality TV shows,movies, etc.

“He is happier now and hindimukhang pagod,” quipped Raymond.

With regards to “controversies”about the Gutierrez family, if ever hissiblings or even parents would be the“showbiz issues” their show will tackle,he has no problem with that. He alsorevealed that his contract with TV5doesn’t have a clause that stipulates hecould not or should not talk about“family issues.”

“If my family is involved in an issueand we have to talk about it then so beit,” expressed Raymond.

He added he won’t have a hardtime too since it’s all about knowingwhen to be a brother or a son and to bea professional TV host.

“I know my role and I know what toportray and kung merong mgainstances na kailangang pag-usapanyung sa family, then I really have todiscuss it. But if it’s not my place to talkabout it then hindi rin ako mag-comment on their behalf,” he related.

Aside from Richard and Ruffa,family members in showbiz are EddieGutierrez, Annabelle Rama, Ruffa, Elvisand Ritchie Paul. And Raymond knowsthat his family would understand the

nature of his job at “Showbiz Police.”Raymond added: “We grew-up in

this industry so we know how the gameworks. We know how it works and alamnaman nila. Maiintindihan nila. And I’vebeen doing showbiz talk show for howmany years now and marami na ringpinagdaanan ang family ko. So maramina akong napagdaanan as a TV host.”.

So how different is Raymond in“Showbiz Police?”

“I will try my best to be fearless.You know it’s a work in progress. Hindipa rin ako sing tapang or sing sanay niNay Cristy or direk Joey pero sigurothrough time we’ll see,” he remarked.

As for the show, he said thatcompared to his past showbiz talkshow, “Showbiz Police” is moreserious.

“We’re taking it to a new level. Wehave to be a little bit fearless so parangyun yung direction…I think it alsoshowed in our first episode that I’mready to ask the serious questions,”said Raymond.

Wine enthusiasts are alwayslooking for an experience that'scompletely arresting -- a wine thatstops you in your tracks, makes theroom go silent, and just pulls you intothe glass. Sometimes, those wines areexpensive -- perhaps opened at anextravagant wine dinner whereeveryone brings a bottle to impress.Other times, they're ordered at arestaurant when one hands the listback to the sommelier, requests anadventure, and is blown away by theresults.

I'm electrified when theseexperiences happen with wines madeby friends. I'm hardly alone in thissentiment.

A few weeks ago, SteveMatthiasson, a top vineyard consultantin Napa Valley and one of Food & WineMagazine's 2012 Winemakers of theYear, was asked about the wines that

most excite him."Wines made by friends are

number one," he declared. "If it's madeby a friend, it tastes better."

I first met Steve and his wifelast February over lunch at their smallvineyard in Napa. I sought them outafter enjoying their 2010 white blend ata restaurant in San Francisco, and afterour lunch together, I became anevangelist for their wines.

The Matthiassons' entireportfolio is absolutely stunning. But it'dbe disingenuous to claim that emotiondoesn't play a role in my appreciationfor their wines. The fact is, there's anemotional component to wineappreciation -- and that shouldn't beignored.

Emotion is why wines almostalways taste better at a winery thanthey do at home. It's why enjoying aspecial bottle with a special someone ismore meaningful than enjoying it alone.It's why a sommelier's recommendationis almost always a hit, especially if herpassion is palpable.

Just as emotion can make awine taste better, it can also make awine taste worse.

In late August, one of Italy'smost famous winemakers, FulvioBressan, penned a racist tirade onFacebook against his nation's firstblack government minister.

Outrage came quickly. Withindays, the Italian reviewer at The WineAdvocate, the world's most influentialwine guide, announced that she wouldomit Bressan's wines from futuretastings.

That decision, while laudable,wasn't necessarily needed -- the racistcomments spread far and wide acrossthe world of wine. As wine writer AlderYarrow wrote, "Bressan's wines willnever taste the same again." One cansafely assume that most consumers

agree with Yarrow.Over Labor Day weekend, one

of my closest friends came to visit fromLos Angeles with his fiancée. Theybrought me a bottle of Grenache fromBeckmen Vineyards, a small winerylocated in Santa Barbara County.

The reason? They visitedBeckmen on their third date -- andenjoyed a bottle of the winery'sGrenache over lunch. Once my friendrealized that he had met the girl he wasgoing to marry, he promptly purchasedseveral cases of the wine.

How that Grenache tastes toothers is irrelevant. Every time theyopen a bottle, they'll remember thebutterflies they felt for one another ontheir third date. And it will always tastedelicious.
