A Word from the Pastor Rev. Lisa V. Wood

Are you feeling a bit “betwixt and

between” these days? We’ve come

a long way since mid-March, when

bells and whistles announced grim

and ghastly accounts of escalating

COVID 19 casualties. That curve

seems to be flattening, but

conflicting reports are proliferated

by the news media as retail stores

are opening, restaurants are now

serving in-house guests, and hair and nail salons are taking appointments. We

feel some relief that we can return to what is familiar, but this new way of

living is far from normal.

Welcome to another period of life in transition! After all, isn’t that what life

is? Aren’t we always moving from one season to another, one stage of life to

another? The off-center, in between periods between life’s “normals” can hold

surprisingly pleasant adventures for us - and valuable life-lessons, if we pay

attention and look for what God wants to teach us in these times. What new

thing have you learned during these past several weeks? What has God shown

you about yourself, your resiliency, your strengths, your shadows? What has

God shown you about God’s self? Ponder these questions and your time will

not be spent in vain.

As restrictions lift in the days ahead, we as individuals will have choices to

make concerning where we go and when. Not everyone will share our

convictions about the potential threat to our well-being; but that doesn’t mean

we can’t choose to be kind, show grace, and exercise our responsibilities as

good citizens. As we reemerge from our exile, we’ll be careful and

cautious; and I know we’ll be compassionate and caring to people we

meet in the grocery, at the gas pump, the garden centers, bakeries, etc.

Most requests are left in the bulletin and newsletter for 2 weeks or so and will be taken out as space is needed for other requests. If you want your request to remain in for a longer period...PLEASE provide updates. Pray for Marsha Oakley and family in the death of her sister, Nina, on May 21 in Dayton, Ohio. Pray for Lucy, daughter of a good friend of Susan Booker. Lucy, who is her late 20’s, had a recent diagnosis of Hodgkins Lymphoma. She will undergo treatment in Alabama. Pray for Lyen Crews, who is with his son until he is admitted to Cardinal Hill for rehab. Pray for Helen as she wraps things up in Florida before she heads back to Kentucky. Helen and

We can choose to look back on these days of quarantine as sheer misery

and frustration; or, we can fondly recall the luxury of time to read,

clean, catch up on unfinished projects, or begin a new one. Many have

remarked that they’ve rediscovered the enjoyment of a simpler, slower

way of living – free from time stressors and a too-busy schedule. Ah,

the power that’s found in a positive perspective!

I continue to pray that the Lord will bless you and keep you during

these betwixt and between times. I look forward to reconnecting with

you and hearing about the lessons God has been teaching you while

we’ve been apart… even as we celebrate a sweet reunion – one Sunday

at a time.

We are Treading on Untrodden Steps By Rev. Richard Dwyer

Our generation has never experienced this

challenge facing us now. We have to

rebuild/restart a music ministry at our church that

considers not just our spiritual needs but also

considers the important health and safety needs of

those in our congregation. Since early childhood,

the music of the church has nurtured us, taught us

Scripture, challenged us with lifelong decisions or

commitments, and consoled our hearts and souls

through times of distress and grief. The words and melodies that we

hear and sing in our worship remain in our ears throughout the days and

weeks giving us strength and spiritual energy.

Churches around the world are meeting this challenge in various

manners. For example, in Germany the government has temporarily

prohibited singing in churches. Here in the United States voice teachers

and choral directors realize the dangers of spreading germs during the

breathing process of singing. With a large choir air currents in a room

can be felt depending on the volume the choir is singing. While our

social distance is 6 feet, the recommended distance of 10 feet is the

safest when people are singing.

As we anticipate our “in person” worship beginning on June 7, we are

creatively working on and developing ways of ministering through

music in our congregation. We face limitations bounded by the

arrangement of our sanctuary, our existing technology and the

age/safety of our congregation. Make these challenges an important

part of your prayer life in the coming days. As we rise to this challenge

and appreciates your prayers on her behalf. Pray for Ann Lucas, who is recovering at home. She is seeing some progress, but still has little stamina. Pray that her strength returns soon. Pray for Thad Cosby, son of Cos and Nancy Cosby, who lost his job recently in Charleston, S.C., due to the effect the coronavirus has had on the economy. Pray for Elmer Day, cousin of Kevin Maudsley, who is on a new group of chemo drugs. He is feeling the best he has in 2 months and is hoping to wean off the morphine he takes for back pain. Pray for Ben Weeks, 17-year-old grandson of Bonnie Savage’s best friend, who is recovering from a liver transplant on April 22. Your continued prayers for Ben are appreciated by Ben, his family and Bonnie.

Greisner, Meredith Shouse, Valda May, Jean Simpson, Bonnie Savage,

Ginny Berry, Catherine Cook, Ellie Rainwater, and Liz Peters have

done good work in record time. Rachel Jones is serving as Advisor and

met with several of our chefs last week via Zoom to discuss publishing

companies and optional features for the book. Once formatted, the

cookbook will be sent to the printer. We expect the books to arrive in

mid-July and the cost is $15 each. We’re continuing to take pre-orders,

so you can call the church office at (859) 277-0420 to let us know how

many copies to reserve for you.

Pray for Marie Haithcox, age 5, who is now home. Please continue to pray for this brave little girl, as well as her brave grandmother, Kimm Youdell. Cards can be sent to 784 Statesman Way, Lexington, KY 40505-4076. Pray for Kim Ross, daughter of an old friend of Mitch Borders, who has Stage 4 colon and liver cancer. Pray for Chaplains who work in our hospitals every day dealing with patient issues. They, too, are exposed to illnesses like the coronavirus, but they courageously do their jobs in order to minister to those who need comfort. Bob’s daughter, Susan, is the Chaplain at Baptist Health. Pray for our service men and women who are active and for our veterans who deal with difficult health issues every day as a result of their service to their country. Major Ginny Iskandarov – niece of Ginny Berry, is now stationed at Ft. Lee in Virginia.

Simon House Appreciates Donations By Dr. Ann Crowe

Simon House is an emergency shelter in Frankfort for homeless women who

are pregnant or have children. It has been in continuous operation since 1985.

At the beginning of this year, just before the onset of the Coronavirus in the

United States, Simon House was filled above its capacity. Staff had even

converted a previous office into sleeping space for clients. At one point, there

were more than 20 women and children living in the facility that was ideally

designed for 12 to 15 clients. Additionally, Simon House had placed one

family with a grandparent and five children in an emergency apartment. As

others requested help because of weather conditions and COVID-19, Simon

House was placing homeless women and children in motel rooms. But that

was becoming too costly, and the numbers needing shelter just kept growing.

Simon House’s Executive Director, Rachelle Foley, began working in

partnership with other agencies in Frankfort helping the homeless, including a

men’s shelter, a women’s shelter (for single women), a family shelter (that can

house male parents with children), and the county emergency management

agency. All were seeing the growing need for additional facilities to house the

homeless during the pandemic. After all, if people were supposed to stay

healthy at home, those without a place to live faced additional challenges.

This group put together a plan and found the necessary resources to make it

work. They received permission to use the gymnasium at Frankfort High

School, since school was not

in session. It is not a fancy

space, but there is enough

room for social distancing,

and clients are warm and dry.

They are also receiving

assistance with finding

permanent housing and job opportunities. This shelter has housed as many as

35 clients at a time, which is almost at its capacity of 40. The partnership of

agencies recruited volunteers and reassigned staff from each agency, and they

found donations for food and supplies.

That is where our church stepped up.

Through your generous donations of bed

and bath linens, we were able to deliver

this load last week (the microwave was

also donated). Director Foley was

extremely pleased to receive these items

and immediately took them to the

temporary shelter.

Please continue to bring your donations, as more linens are needed.

Additionally, there is a need for cleaning supplies, food, personal products

(e.g., soap, shampoo, deodorant), and baby diapers and wipes.

It does not look as though the need for shelter beds will end soon, so the

partnership of agencies is exploring options for another possible solution to

provide basic housing for those who have none.

We hope we never need these forms but should one of our own fall or become

ill while at church, we want to be able to provide the best informed care

possible. Of course, completing these forms is strictly voluntary, and they will

be kept secure and confidential. However, in the case of an emergency, you

would be much better served by paramedics, EMT’s and those on hand who

have an awareness of your medical history, medications, allergies, etc. If you

have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact a member of the Safety

Team.

Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.
