6th Sunday in Ordinary Time What an audience Jesus has in today's Gospel! "A
great crowd of his disciples and a large number of
people from all over Judea and Jerusalem and the
coastal region of Tyre and Sidon." Disciples, pagans,
and devout Jews gathered together to hear Jesus speak
in the Sermon on the Mount. All of these people had
something in common. God was someone to be
bargained with, and if God liked you, you were
rewarded with good fortune. This Sunday, Jesus tells
us a different story. "Woe to you who are rich ? who
are filled now ? who laugh ? when all speak well of
you. Blessed are you who are poor ? you who are now
hungry ? when people hate you and when they exclude
you and insult you." Jesus completely flips the script
on what it means to be blessed by God. What he
proclaims as "woe" are states of life we often strive
for, and "blessed" are the states we work hard to avoid!
Jesus is concerned with the kingdom of God and the
world to come, not the typical structures of power and
privilege. The word "now" appears often in these
statements. Why? If you are well "now," that's beside
the point. To be rich in this life has no direct bearing
on your immortal soul. If you're struggling "now,"
that's not an indication that God has forgotten you or
that - in light of eternity - you're worse off than
someone else. In fact, it could be an indicator that
you're enduring something that will bring you to a
place of greater, eternal joy in the future.
This Sunday, consider your priorities. Who do we
reject as not blessed, and thereby inflict woe upon
ourselves? When we encounter difficult situations in
our own lives, do we see them as opportunities to
remember God and lean on His mercy and grace?
St. John and St. Michael Catholic Parishes are vibrant faith communities committed to living the Gospel of Jesus Christ through lives of prayer, service and education while ac-tively proclaiming “all are welcome.”

A Message from the Pastor
In this week’s bulletin message, I would like to con-
nect with the title of this year’s Bishop’s Appeal—
Missionaries of Hope. Through God’s will, I have
been called to serve the faithful as a missionary in Gil-
lett, Suring, and Chute Pond. I have traveled from
across the globe, but not all missionaries necessarily
come from far-away lands.
We are all called to be missionaries of hope to one an-
other in one way or another. We are called to walk to-
gether in a lifelong relationship with Jesus and to help
those in need. One of way many ways by which we
show our missionary spirit is to support the many min-
istries of the Green Bay Diocese through the Bishop’s
Appeal.
God acts through people who are generous, loving, and
open to serving Him. Thank you for your gift to the
Bishop’s Appeal and for your support of this parish.
Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father,
and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
–1 Corinthians 1:3 God bless us all!

This week we take a look at how those donations help
support education, Catholic schools and families. Families & Schools of Discipleship Mission Team
This team provides resources, materials and curricu-
lum that guides educational programs to Catholic
schools and parishes. They also support marriage
preparation ministries. Following are a few other ex-
amples:
Principal Leadership Days provide school leaders
with an opportunity for spiritual enrichment and to
learn some of the best practices in Catholic
schools.
Religious Certification Program provides certifica-
tion for all Catholic school principals and religious
education leaders.
Marriage Preparation Program provides engaged
couples an opportunity for quality time together to
learn from married couples the challenges and joys
of married life.
Campus Ministry at UW Green Bay and UW Osh-
kosh provides college students with the opportu-
nity to worship and grow in their faith.
In 2018, $1,767,438 of the Bishop’s Appeal was dis-
tributed to the Families & Schools of Discipleship
Mission Team. This represents 83% of their operating
budget.
