SWIMMING PROGRAM This week the Health Department released a warning to parents of students who attend swim lessons about the Cryptospiridium outbreak. With our upcoming Middle School swimming program parents will have good reason to be concerned. We contacted the Corydon Leisure Centre and we have been assured that there have been no cases reported connected with the pool and that the pool is “superchlorinated” and tested every 4 hours. If you have further concerns please contact me or the pool directly.

CONFERENCE TIME Both Brigid and Trish are away at the annual Business Manager’s conference today and tomorrow. Next Thursday and Friday Sue Dean and I will be attending the Maroondah/Whitehorse Network Principal confer-ence. Should you need to speak to anyone during this time please don’t hesitate to contact the office and your concern will be directed appropriately. Shane Harrop will be acting Principal during this time.

CURRICULUM DAY Our next Curriculum Day will be Friday 7 June. Monday 10 June is the Queen’s Birthday public holiday so we thought this a good opportunity for a long weekend for some of our families.

2013 Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge.

It’s time to register! We are now registering students to participate in this year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge. This year we are starting later due to industrial action which has now been lifted. Once again the challenge includes all Primary School levels. Year 3-6 children are challenged to read 15 books and Prep-2 children are challenged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books from the Challenge lists. Prep-2 children can read independently or experience books – this includes shared reading or being read to and can involve parents, teachers, siblings, student buddies or classmates. Certificates signed by the Premier will be awarded to celebrate the achievements of all students who success-fully complete the Reading Challenge. Names of students will be also published in a special supplement in The Sunday Age in Term 4. If your child /children would like to enter the Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge please print and fill out the permission form included in this week’s Connect and return it as soon as possible to your child’s classroom teacher. Once consent forms have been returned your child/children will then be registered and given their individual user name and password. They will also be given a student instruction sheet to help them get start-ed. When your child has read a book he/she can begin recording their reading online and watch their own indicator grow as they get closer to their target!

Reading to Young Children: A Head-Start in Life Did you know that reading to young children every day has enormous benefits for their brain development, thinking skills and language? Young children who are read to regularly also do better at school according to a study conducted by the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research and funded by the De-partment of Education and Early Childhood Development. Japanese News

Japanese at home for Middle & Senior School! You may have heard that students in Yr 3-6 have been using an app in Japanese called Zondle. Zondle is a games-based learning website that allows me to create games to support my classes learning needs. I have created various quiz questions for students to complete on my chosen topics that can be played in a selection of casual games. I am also able to monitor student results to my quizzes and their progress. Each student has a simple log in that allows them to play online or on a mobile device. Zondle provides a protected interface, totally under the control of the teach-er. Yr3-6 students can download the Zondle app for free or visit the website and enjoy using their Japanese at home.

TAIKO news! Congratulations to all our terrific drummers who performed on Open Day this week. They did a great job under difficult weather conditions. Our Yr5 group had their very first public performance and put in a terrific effort! It was good to see their enthusiasm and hear such confident drumming sounds. The Yr 6s will perform again on Sunday May 19th at the Japan Festival- Box Hill Town Hall. This is an exciting festival that runs all day and offers delicious Japanese food, craft stalls, entertainment and much more. Our Warrior Daiko will perform at 10.45am

PARENTS ASSOCIATION REPORT

What a fantastic night we had last Friday at the Croydon Sports Centre for the Mother/Son

night. It was great seeing so many mums running around playing games with their sons. I

loved watching the grade 5/6 mums being so competitive with their boys I’m not sure who

wanted to win more! A big thank you to Tanya and her Mum and Dad for helping out on the

night, it was greatly appreciated. We only had one collision, which I think wasn’t too bad. The

pizzas were yummy and the cold drinks went down a treat. Check out the photo below.

Thanks to everyone who participated, there was lots of laughs.

Last Friday the Entertainment books went out to families, I hope you have had a chance to

have a look through them and decide whether you would like to purchase one or not. If you

would like one please fill in the form that was attached with cash or your credit card details

and put them in your children’s pouches or hand them into the office. If you decide it isn’t

something you would like to purchase could you please hand the books back to the office. If

you have any questions please either contact myself or Trish in the office. Many thanks.

Put the date in your diary and start organising a table…..

The WARRANWOOD TRIVIA NIGHT will be held on Saturday 15th June 2013, 7pm till

11pm. Don’t forget to wear a ‘Splash of Red’ on the night to add some colour!

So to get you scratching the ol’ grey matter we have included a few tricky questions …

see how many you can answer.

Q: With reference to mobile phone networks, what does 3G stand for?

Q: In the 2009 film 'The Hangover' which Las Vegas hotel did the bachelor party stay

at?

Q: Who had an 80s hit with the song entitled '99 Red Balloons'?

Q: What is the softest mineral in the world?

Q: Do camels store water in their humps?

Cost of tickets is $20 per person. BYO nibbles and drinks. Tables of 10, so gather your

friends, family, neighbours and join in with what is going to be a guaranteed night of laughter

and entertainment! Be quick as this is going to book up fast and we don’t want any ‘red’ faces

who have missed out…

For more information see the attached flyer below..

The answers are: 1. 3rd generation, 2. Caesar’s Palace, 3. Nena, 4. Talc, 5. No they consist of

fat.

Thanks everyone,

Georgie
