COUNTY FAIR NEWS & INFORMATION

FASHION REVIEW Fashion Revue - The 4-H Fashion Revue will be on Tuesday July 19th at 6:30 p.m. at the Wash-ington County Event Center. Judging and the public Fashion Revue is in one show. Come to practice July 18 at 1:30 p.m.

Encore Fashions - Any 4-H member may enter and model an outfit out of their own closet - outfit may be store bought or handmade. Put together the best outfit for you and be a “fashion model” on our stage!

Open Class Clothing - Child, Youth & Teen age groups will be judged sep-arately. Models may wear one or more garments home sewn or decorated ready-made garments made by self or other person. A separate class will be added for Encore Fashions—a ready-made outfit from your closet. Classes include: Child 8 yrs and under, Youth 9 yrs to 12 yrs, and Teen 13-18 yrs. Entry deadline is July 15 at the Washington County Extension Office.

PROJECTS MUST BE LABELED All General and Home Ec project exhibits MUST be labeled with name, age, county, project and unit of the 4-H member. Information MUST be written or typed on a label and securely attached to your exhibit.

Labels for Clothing & Heritage Arts are available from the Extension Office and must be attached at the garments or items. This will assist in identi-fying exhibit items and getting them displayed accurately. Example: John Doe (12 yrs.)

Interview Judging will be Tuesday, July 19th at the County Events Center for all Home Ec. and General 4-H Projects, except Foods & Cake Decorating, One parent/leader may be present to observe judging. Food’s & Cake Decorating on Tuesday July 26th. Be sure to bring your project AND your rec-ord book to your interview. Interview schedules have been mailed to mem-bers so check your mailbox. Show up on time, look nice and be prepared to discuss your pro-ject with a judge. If you have questions about interview judging, contact the Extension office today at 345-2287.

*If you cannot be there, Notify the Extension Office of your conflict and request the written interview questionnaire to include in your recordbook — and leave project to be judged!

E-Records – be sure to use the 2015-16 ver-sion of the e-Record. Note: There are specif-ic recordbooks for certain projects —including the supplement pages.

Read the project requirements and include all necessary information or supplements.

Notebooks or Record Binders: use any stur-dy binder that has three fasteners or three rings to secure your records. Please put your name, age, project, and unit on the front cover. You many use a photo, if you like, too.

Review the project requirements and score sheets: to see criteria the judg-es will use, go to the 4-H Web-site http://www.colorado4h.org Click on Projects & Recordbooks.

Members must be interviewed with their projects for their projects to be eligible for project champions.

If a member cannot be interviewed due to an unavoidable conflict, a written interview ques-tionnaire (Absentee Interview Form) may be completed by the member and turned in with the project on judging day. This written interview will allow the project to be considered for unit placing and participation at State Fair. (Scheduling conflicts with state or national 4-H events will be excused absences.)

LIVESTOCK RECORD BOOKS Due Tuesday, July 19

4-H members MUST turn in completed livestock and horse record books to the Extension Office by 4:30 p.m. July 19! The record book is part of your total project so without it you have an incom-plete project. No record...No show!

Books should be bound in a basic 3-ring binder with this year’s book in the front and the past year’s books behind. Before turning it in, be sure you and your club leader have signed the completed book.

Since books are due before fair, please just esti-mate market and sale prices for your projects. Some current prices are: Market Lambs: $1.50/lb. Market Goats: $2.00/lb. Market Beef: $1.17/lb. Market Hogs: $.68 Poultry: $7/chicken, $12 geese/turkey Rabbits: $9/hd.

All books should be closed out Sept 30th or the last day of fair, (whichever is the last day you have your animals). For your inventory pages, the be-ginning inventory should be dated Oct 1, 2015 and ending on Sept 30th 2016.

Remember that all age groups should be using the state e-record. E-records can be downloaded from the state 4-H website www.colorado4h.org. Click the projects and recordbooks link to the left, then select livestock project resources, e-records and the age division needed. You can download and print the book to complete by hand –OR- down-load and complete by computer in excel or pdf. For breeding projects, be sure to check that you have all required supplement pages listed under the breeding project supplements.

The books will be judged after fair and returned at our achievement program in October.

Catch-It books are also due prior to fair! All catch-it books need to be

turned in by 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 19.

LIVESTOCK EXHIBITOR MEETING All 4-H and FFA members showing livestock should attend the exhibitor meeting being held during fair. The meeting will be offered in the sheep showring area on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. This short meeting will give information about expectations and deadlines of fair week. Par-ents are also encouraged to attend.

PACKER CERTIFICATION FORMS Deadline - July 26

A packer certification form (previously called COOL form) is required for all market livestock exhibiting at the fair including swine, sheep, goats, beef, rab-bits and poultry and are required of all exhibitors (4-H and FFA). If you haven’t already turned in your forms, please do so before July 26. With less than 30 days left to fair, please be sure to watch withdrawal dates of any medications or sup-plements used. You will need to list those on the form if anything is given between now and fair.

STALL RESERVATIONS Members: Please make stall requests to your club leader or FFA advisor ASAP. NO tack stalls will be allowed in the goat/sheep barn so please only reserve enough space for animals. All small animal tack will be put in the swine barn. Sand is available for bedding in the beef barn. Exhibitors are responsible for providing wood chips or appro-priate bedding for the other barns. Club leaders and FFA advisors: Please collect and turn in stall reservations for all livestock depart-ments by July 19. Please make sure that any spe-cial requests or needs are included in the reserva-tion. If possible, reservations should include the number of head being brought to fair by each family – not a total number of stalls requested. Reserva-tions may be dropped off at the Extension office, called in to 345-2287, faxed to 345-2288, or emailed to jamie.axtell@colostate.edu.

ROUND ROBIN Round Robin is a showmanship competition de-signed to challenge the winners of the intermediate and senior divisions of beef, sheep, goat, swine and horse. If you place 1st or 2nd in your show-manship class, you are eligible to compete. Eligible contestants must let the Extension Office know if you intend to participate in round robin—if the win-ners do not wish to compete, the alternate will be the next highest placing youth. If you win show-manship in two different species, you must let the office know which species you’ll be entering. The deadline for entering is Thursday by 4:00 p.m. Round Robin is Friday at 8:00 a.m. 3

NO tack stalls will be allowed in the Sheep/Goat Barn again this year due to increased animal numbers. Please be sure that all tack stays in the hog barn!

LIVESTOCK CONSIGNMENTS All 4-H and FFA members must consign their livestock by Thursday at 4:00 p.m.! All market animals must be accounted for on the consignment form—this means that you’ll need to tell us what animals are going home, what animals will be selling, what an-imals will be shipping, and what animals will be going to a locker plant. Be sure to ac-count for all market animals at the fair, even those that may not have made weight or shown!

Consignment Options: SHIP ANIMALS: Any animals that were not sold in the sale and are within the department weight limits are eligible to be shipped with oth-er fair animals for a pre-arranged buyback price. These prices are posted in the Extension office and have been pre-arranged through the sale committee. Transportation is arranged for these animals. All shipped animals will be charged a ship fee of $5/hd.

LOCKER ANIMALS: If you are planning to send your animal to a locker plant, it is your responsi-bility to set up an appointment with the locker and make arrangements for transportation. Some lockers will pick up sale animals so you can check to see if that is an option. If you need a list of local lockers, please contact the Exten-sion office today.

JUNIOR LIVESTOCK SALE: Each member may consign up to two animals for the sale (can not be from the same species). Animals must make weight and be shown in regular market classes to be eligible for sale. The sale will con-sist of three “rounds”. All champions/reserve champions that have been consigned will sell in the first round. The second and third round will be randomly generated but all exhibitors will have a chance to sell in the first or second round before spots are drawn for the third round.

SALE RULES! All exhibitors must show in

showmanship class in the species they are selling in the

sale. Any exhibitor who chooses not to show in showmanship in a specific species will not be allowed to sell in that species.

Junior Livestock Sale Requirements

PROJECT & JUNIOR LIVESTOCK SALE PHOTOS

All livestock selling in the junior livestock sale must be photographed prior to the sale for use on buyer thank you cards. A complete photo schedule will be posted at fair. It is your respon-sibility to see that the pictures of your sale animals are taken! Photos will be printed and attached to your buyer card for you to pick up during the livestock sale on Friday. Photos will be paid for by the junior livestock sale com-mittee. If you choose to have additional photos taken, they will available at your cost and can be picked up Friday afternoon at the Extension office on the fairgrounds.

THANK YOU’s As mentioned above, you will be responsible for getting a photo taken for a photo buyer card. These cards should be picked up during the sale and personally presented to your buyer as a token of your appreciation. It is also appropri-ate to present them with a personal gift or thank you at that time if you wish. After fair, you are expected to follow up with another formal thank you. Thank you cards are available during fair at the Extension office. All members should pick up a card, fill it out and return it to the Ex-tension office. Please do not mail the thank you as we’ll need to verify that the card was turned in before your check can be issued. This is ex-pected of all 4-H and FFA members selling through the sale.

Pavilion—SE corner of fairgrounds The Washington County Stockmen's Association, and other local businesses will offer a FREE meal prior to the junior livestock sale. All 4-H and FFA exhibitors and their families are invited to attend. Please be sure to invite any potential buyers that your family may do business with or any individuals that have supported your project. BBQ sponsors include: Washington County Stockmen, Bank of Colorado, Y-W Electric, Culligan Water and the Ak-ron Chamber of Commerce.

GRANDSTAND CLEANING

The Fair Board will pay groups $50 for cleaning the grandstands during the fair. A few 4-H clubs have already volunteered, please contact the exten-sion office if you’d like to add your club or group (does not have to be a 4-H club)

OPEN CLASS OPPORTUNITIES

All youth enrolled in 4-H and FFA are also eligible to enter in the fair as an Open Class Exhibitor. This may be in Agriculture; Home Ec. And Horticulture Department (includes art, crafts, baking, garden, etc.). This is a great place to exhibit any gardening, sewing, artwork or other hobby work that you have made or grown this year. Bring entries Tuesday, July 26th from 1-6 p.m.

FAIR PARADE AND THEME

This year’s fair parade theme will be “Sew it! Grow

it! Show it! at the Fair”. The parade will take place

on FRIDAY, July 29 at 10:00 a.m. Entry forms are

available at the Extension Office or at Northstar

Bank in Akron.

CLOVERBUD EXHIBITS Cloverbuds, age 5-7, are en-couraged to exhibit projects at the fair without competition. Each will receive a participation ribbon. You may display a post-er or display board along with the Cloverbud Record. Clover-buds may be part of the inter-viewing process on Tuesday, July 19th. They may also enter the 4-H Fashion Review in the Encore Fashions. Contact Gisele Jefferson in advance for more information and to register for the Fashion Revue.

All goat exhibitors are invited to attend a showmanship clinic on Thursday, July 7th at the fair-grounds. Bring your goat(s) and a goat chain and we will practice showmanship and learn some basic grooming and showday tips. This is also a great time to check the weight of your animals. PRE FAIR MEETING

All rabbit and poultry exhibitors are being urged to attend a pre-fair meeting Thursday, July 7th at 6:30 p.m. at the fairgrounds. Infor-mation will be given about which class your ani-mal should be entered into at fair and tips will be given about what to bring to fair. Basic rabbit showmanship will also be covered. Come early at 6:00 p.m. for a free supper in the large room of the event center. The meeting will follow in the ag building. To RSVP, contact the Exten-sion office at 345-2287. If you can’t attend, please let us know what you’ll be bringing to fair ASAP so that pen space can be reserved. Barn space will be VERY limited. Sarah Eatherton 4-H Horsemanship Award

Friends of the Larry Eatherton family and the Washington County 4-H Council continue to sponsor a trophy and savings bond to recog-nize one 4-H member in the horse project who makes the best effort in four areas: attitude, club participation, improvement in horseman-ship skills, and sportsmanship. Club leaders should submit nominations by July 15th to the Extension Office.

4-H COUNTY COUNCIL

The 4-H County Council is made up of dele-gates from each club in our county. County council comes together to adopt policy about our 4-H programs, plan upcoming 4-H activities and provide leadership opportunities above your club level. Council delegates and officers are encouraged to attend district, state and na-tional events including the Leadership Develop-ment Conference (Denver—Jan), State 4-H Conference (Ft Collins—June) and Citizenship Washington Focus (DC—June).

Any member may attend meetings and is en-couraged to get involved but each club can only have two voting members. It is extremely im-portant that your voting delegates attend so that your club is represented! To find out more, please plan to attend our September council meeting to be held on September 19 at 7:00 p.m. at the Courthouse Annex. Notes from the June County Council Meeting: -Carnival and raffle was a success and clubs have been paid their share of the carnival pro-ceeds. -All 4-H members are encouraged to come help clean the fairgrounds on Friday, July 22 at 3:00 p.m. as a community service project for all clubs. -Club leaders will be turning in their club com-pletion forms July 1 to determine if all members are in good standing prior to fair. YOUTH ROBOTICS CAMP

We hosted a Youth Ro-botics Camp in Akron June 20-24 with 18 partic-ipants. We had a great time learning to build and program simple robots using Lego NXT robot kits and laptop computers. They learned to program the robot to use four dif-ferent types of sensors, and to maneuver different challenge courses.

In spring, regular dog obedience sessions were held in Arickaree with Dawn Craig. July 10th we are hosting a 4-H Dog Fun Match to practice showing our dogs.
